(…) Esta estructura del «en tanto que», o, dicho más exactamente, el «tener que ver con» en tanto que llano tener y tomar que aquélla determina, determina nuestro ser hacia el mundo, y en una amplia medida también nuestro ser para con nosotros mismos. A su vez, este significar sólo es posible como modo fundamental de nuestro ser gracias a que nuestra existencia es ella misma una existencia comprensiva. Incluso la abulia de una existencia es sólo un modo del comprender que corresponde a esa misma existencia, un modo de aquella comprensibilidad que corresponde necesariamente a toda (125) existencia que es ser en el mundo, un modo que ciertamente puede variar en una medida amplia.

El significar comprensivo no se dirige primariamente ni a cosas concretas ni a conceptos generales, sino que vive en el mundo circundante inmediato y en el mundo en su conjunto. En este significar, la existencia tiene conocimiento de su mundo; él propio conocimiento es el descubrimiento de la circunstancia respectiva en la que el ente comparece como ente. Lo abierto de este modo puede fijarse aun cuando la cosa mundana respectiva no comparezca ella misma. Es decir, el conocimiento del mundo que nace en el significar comprensivo puede poseerse y custodiarse como significado, como una comprensibilidad en la que se mueve la existencia.

This as-structure – or more precisely, the act of dealing-with as a direct having and taking, insofar as it is determined by the as-structure – determines our being unto the world and in large measure even our being unto ourselves. For its part, sense-making is possible as a basic form of our being only because our existence itself is capable of understanding. Even if one’s existence is thick and dull, that dullness is merely one mode of the understanding that necessarily belongs to every existence that is being in the world. Obviously the mode of understanding can vary widely.

The act of making-sense or understanding is directed primarily not to individual things and to general concepts. Instead, it is alive in one’s firsthand lived world and in one’s world as a whole. In this act of sense-making, the world is opened up for existence. This disclosure is the uncovering of the current form of a being’s suitability-for, whereby it is present as a being. Whatever gets opened up this way can be held on to, even when the worldly thing in question is not itself present. That is, the opening-up of the world – which unfolds in the act of understanding or sense-making – can be possessed and preserved as meaning, i.e., as a world of understanding in which existence operates.]

(…) Diese Als-Struktur, oder genauer das von ihr bestimmte Zu-tun-haben-mit als schlichtes Haben und Nehmen, bestimmt unser Sein zur Welt und in weitem Ausmaße auch unser Sein zu uns selbst. Dieses Bedeuten seinerseits ist nur dadurch als eine Grundart unseres Seins möglich, daß unser Dasein selbst verstehendes ist. Selbst die Dumpfheit eines Daseins ist nur ein Modus des Verstehens, das zu ihm selbst gehört, ein Modus der Verständlichkeit, die zu jedem Dasein, das Sein in der Welt ist, notwendig gehört, ein Modus, der freilich in weitem Ausmaß variieren kann.

Das verstehende Bedeuten richtet sich primär weder auf Einzeldinge noch auf allgemeine Begriffe sondern lebt in der nächsten Umwelt und Welt im Ganzen. In diesem Bedeuten hat das Dasein Aufschluß über seine Welt; der Aufschluß selbst ist die Entdeckung der jeweiligen Bewandtnis, in welcher das Seiende als Seiendes anwesend ist. Das so Aufgeschlossene kann festgehalten werden, auch dann, wenn das betreffende Weltding nicht selbst anwesend ist; d. h. der im verstehenden Bedeuten erwachsene Aufschluß der Welt ist besitzbar und verwahrbar als Bedeutung, als eine Verständlichkeit, darin das Dasein sich bewegt.
