Por nenhum desses Modi do findar, a morte se deixa caracterizar como final adequado do Dasein. Se o morrer fosse entendido como ter-chegado-ao-final no sentido que findar tem em um dos modos referidos, o Dasein seria tomado como algo subsistente ou utilizável. Na morte, o Dasein não se tornou completo, nem desapareceu simplesmente, nem menos ainda se tornou pronto ou disponível de todo como utilizável.

O Dasein, do mesmo modo que enquanto é, já é constantemente o seu ainda-não, já é sempre também o seu final. O findar que é pensado com a morte não significa um ter-chegado-ao-final do Dasein, mas  um ser-para-o-final desse ente. A morte é um modo de ser que o Dasein assume logo que é. “Um humano logo que nasce já é bastante velho para morrer.”

Findar, como ser para o final, exige sua apreensão ontológica a partir do modo-de-ser do Dasein. E também presumível que só a partir da determinação existenciária de findar se possa entender a possibilidade de um ainda-não do existir que se situe “antes” do “final”. Somente a elucidação existenciária (677) do ser para o final fornece base suficiente para a delimitação do possível sentido de se poder falar de uma totalidade-do-Dasein, se essa totalidade deve ser constituída de resto pela morte como “o final”. Mediante ninguno de estos modos del terminar se puede caracterizar adecuadamente la muerte como fin del Dasein. Si se entendiera el morir, en cuanto (265) haber-llegado-a-fin, en el sentido de un terminar del tipo recién mencionado, se supondría al Dasein como algo que está-ahí o como algo a la mano. En la muerte el Dasein no está consumado ni simplemente ha desaparecido, ni mucho menos ha llegado a estar concluido; tampoco es enteramente disponible como algo a la mano.

Antes bien, así como el Dasein, mientras esté siendo, ya es constantemente su no-todavía, así él es también siempre ya su fin. El terminar a que se refiere la muerte no significa un haber-llegado-a-fin del Dasein (Zu-Ende-sein), sinoa un estar vuelto hacia el fin de parte de este ente (Sein zum Ende). La muerte es una manera de ser de la que el Dasein se hace cargo tan pronto como él es. “Apenas un hombre viene a la vida ya es bastante viejo para morir”1.

El terminar, como estar vuelto hacia el fin, exige ser ontológicamente aclarado desde el modo de ser del Dasein. Y presumiblemente también sólo a partir de la determinación existencial del terminar se hará comprensible la posibilidad de un no-todavía de la existencia, que está “antes” del “fin”. Sólo la aclaración existencial del estar vuelto hacia el fin nos dará también la base suficiente para definir en qué sentido se puede hablar de una integridad del Dasein, supuesto que esta integridad deba constituirse mediante la muerte en tanto que “fin”.

El intento de llegar a una comprensión de la integridad propia de la existencia partiendo de una aclaración del no-todavía y pasando por la caracterización del [SZ:246] terminar, no ha conducido a la meta. Sólo ha mostrado negativamente que el no-todavía que el Dasein es en cada caso se resiste a ser interpretado como un resto pendiente. El fin al que el Dasein, existiendo, está vuelto, queda inadecuadamente determinado mediante un haber-llegado-al-fin. Pero, a la vez, la meditación tenía como objeto dejar en claro que su marcha debía invertirse. La caracterización positiva de los fenómenos en cuestión (no-ser-todavía, terminar, integridad) sólo se logrará mediante una clara orientación que apunte a la constitución de ser del Dasein. Ahora bien, esta claridad se afianzará negativamente frente a posibles desviaciones por medio de la intelección de la filiación regional de las estructuras del fin y de la integridad que van ontológicamente en sentido opuesto al Dasein. Aucun de ces modes de finir ne convient pour caractériser la mort comme fin du Das ein. Si le trépas était entendu comme être-à-la-fin au sens d’une fin du genre dont nous discutons, alors le Dasein serait par là-même posé comme étant là-devant ou comme utilisable.

Dans la mort le Dasein n’est ni achevé ni simplement disparu, pas plus qu’il n’est terminé ou entièrement disponible comme utilisable.

De même que le Dasein est constamment déjà son pas-encore pendant tout le temps qu’il est, de même il est aussi déjà toujours sa fin. Le finir auquel on pense dans le cas de la mort ne signifie pas pour le Dasein être-à-la-fin, mais au contraire  un être vers la fin de cet étant. La mort est une manière d’être que le Dasein assume sitôt qu’il est. « Sitôt qu’un homme vient à la vie, il est tout de suite assez vieux pour mourir . »

Finir, conçu comme être vers la fin, exige qu’on l’élucide à partir du genre d’être du Dasein. Et il se pourrait bien aussi que seule une détermination existentiale de « finir » rende intelligible la possibilité pour le pas-encore d’un être existant qui se situe « avant » la « fin ». L’élucidation existentiale de l’être vers la fin est également seule à donner une base satisfaisante pour définir le possible sens dans lequel on puisse parler d’une entièreté du Dasein si tant est que cette entièreté doive être constituée par la mort comme « fin ».

(299) La tentative consistant à partir d’une clarification du pas-encore pour atteindre, à travers la caractérisation du finir, une entente de [SZ:246] l’entièreté qui est celle du Dasein, n’a pas conduit au but fixé. Elle a seulement fait voir à titre négatif que le pas-encore qu’est chaque fois le Dasein rejette son interprétation comme restant. La fin vers laquelle le Dasein est en existant demeure inadéquatement déterminée par un être-à-la-fin. Mais en même temps la considération devait se rendre compte qu’il lui fallait inverser sa démarche. Elle n’arrivera à caractériser les phénomènes en question (ne-pas-encore-être, finir, entièreté) de manière positive qu’en s’orientant clairement sur la constitution d’être du Dasein. Mais ce choix clair et sans équivoque sera négativement prémuni de faire fausse route en s’engageant vers l’appartenance régionale de structures de fin et d’entièreté qui sont ontologiquement incompatibles avec le Dasein. By none of these modes of ending can death be suitably characterized as the “end” of Dasein. If dying, as Being-at-an-end, were understood in the sense of an ending of the kind we have discussed, then Dasein would thereby be treated as something present-at-Hand or ready-to-hand. In death, Dasein has Not been fulfilled nor has it simply disappeared; it has not become finished nor is it wholly at one’s disposal as something ready-to-hand.

On the contrary, just as Dasein is already its “not-yet”, and is its “not-yet” constantly as long as it is, it is already its end too. The “ending” which we have in view when we speak of death, does not signify Dasein’s Being-at-an-end (Zu-Ende sein), but a Being-towards-the-end (Sein zum Ende) of this entity. Death is a way to be, which Dasein takes over as soon as it is. “As soon as Man comes to life, he is at once old enough to die.’

Ending, as Being-towards-the-end, must be clarified ontologically in terms of Dasein’s kind of Being. And presumably the possibility of an existent Being of that “not-yet” which lies ‘before’ the ‘end’, will become (290) intelligible only if the character of ending has been determined existentially. The existential clarification of Being-towards-the-end will also give us for the first time an adequate basis for defining what can possibly be the meaning of our talk about a totality of Dasein, if indeed this totality is to be constituted by death as the ‘end’.

Our attempt to understand Dasein’s totality by taking as our point of departure a clarification of the “not-yet” and going on to a [SZ:246] characterization of “ending”, has not led us to our goal. It has shown only in a negative way that the “not-yet” which Dasein in every case is, resists Interpretation as something still outstanding. The end towards which Dasein is as existing, remains inappropriately defined by the notion of a “Being-at-an-end”. These considerations, however, should at the same time make it plain that they must be turned back in their course. A positive characterization of the phenomena in question (Being-not-yet, ending, totality) succeeds only when it is unequivocally oriented to Dasein’s state of Being. But if we have any insight into the realms where those end-structures and totality-structures which are to be construed ontologically with Dasein belong, this will, in a negative way, make this unequivocal character secure against wrong turnings.

Durch keinen dieser Modi des Endens läßt sich der Tod als Ende des Daseins angemessen charakterisieren. Würde das Sterben als zu-Ende-Sein im Sinne eines Endens der besprochenen Art verstanden, dann wäre das Dasein hiermit als Vorhandenes bzw. Zuhandenes gesetzt. Im Tod ist das Dasein weder vollendet, noch einfach verschwunden, noch gar fertig geworden oder als Zuhandenes ganz verfügbar.

So Wie das Dasein vielmehr ständig, solange es ist, schon sein noch-nicht ist, so ist es auch schon immer sein Ende. Das mit dem Tod gemeinte enden bedeutet kein Zu-Ende-sein des Daseins, sondern ein Sein zum Ende dieses Seienden. Der Tod ist eine Weise zu sein, die das Dasein übernimmt, sobald es ist. »Sobald ein Mensch zum Leben kommt, sogleich ist er alt genug zu sterben .«

Enden als Sein zum Ende verlangt seine ontologische Aufklärung aus der Seinsart des Daseins. Und vermutlich wird auch erst aus der existenzialen Bestimmung von Enden die Möglichkeit eines existierenden Seins des Noch-Nicht, das »vor« dem »Ende« liegt, verständlich. Die existenziale Klärung des Seins zum Ende gibt auch erst die zureichende Basis, den möglichen Sinn der Rede von einer Daseinsganzheit zu umgrenzen, wenn anders diese Ganzheit durch den Tod als »Ende« konstituiert sein soll.

Der Versuch, im Ausgang von einer Klärung des Noch-nicht über die Charakteristik des Endens zu einem Verständnis der (246) daseinsmäßigen Ganzheit zu gelangen, führte nicht ans Ziel. Er zeigte nur negativ: das Noch-nicht, das je das Dasein ist, widerstrebt einer Interpretation als Ausstand. Das Ende, zu dem das Dasein existierend ist, bleibt durch ein Zu-Ende-sein unangemessen bestimmt. Zugleich sollte aber die Betrachtung deutlich machen, daß ihr Gang umgekehrt Werden muß. Die positive Charakteristik der fraglichen Phänomene (Noch-nicht-sein, Enden, Ganzheit) gelingt nur bei einer eindeutigen Orientierung an der Seinsverfassung des Daseins. Diese Eindeutigkeit wird aber negativ gegen Abwege gesichert durch die Einsicht in die regionale Zugehörigkeit der Ende- und Ganzheitstrukturen, die dem Dasein ontologisch zuwiderlaufen.
