S. Affirmer alors que l’essence de la pensée est autre chose que la pensée, c’est dire que la pensée est autre chose que le vouloir.

P. C’est aussi pourquoi, si vous me demandez ce que je veux à proprement parler, dans cette méditation qui recherche l’essence de la pensée, je répondrai: je veux le non-vouloir.

S. Entre-temps cette expression nous est apparue comme ambiguë.

E. « Non-vouloir », en un premier sens, désigne encore un vouloir: un vouloir dominé par un non, alors même que ce non concernerait le vouloir lui-même et marquerait qu’on y renonce. « Ne pas vouloir » signifierait alors: renoncer volontairement au vouloir. L’expression « non-vouloir », en second lieu, désigne aussi ce qui demeure entièrement étranger à toute espèce de volonté.

S. Ce qui, donc, ne peut jamais être accompli ou atteint par un acte de volonté.

P. Mais peut-être nous en rapprocherons-nous par un vouloir de l’espèce du non-vouloir, ce dernier entendu en son premier sens.

E. Le premier et le second non-vouloir vous apparaissent ainsi comme reliés l’un à l’autre par un rapport déterminé.

P. Ce rapport ne m’apparaît pas seulement. Lui-même me parle, s’il m’est permis d’en faire état: il me parle, pour ne pas dire qu’il m’appelle, depuis que j’essaie de méditer sur ce qui donne vie et mouvement à notre entretien.

S. Me trompé-je, si je définis comme suit le rapport d’un non-vouloir à l’autre? Vous voulez un non-vouloir au sens (151) d’un renoncement au vouloir, afin qu’à travers un tel non-vouloir, nous puissions nous avancer vers cette essence de la pensée que nous cherchons et qui n’ est pas un vouloir. Ou du moins afin que nous puissions nous préparer à cette approche.

P. Non seulement votre conjecture est exacte, mais, par les dieux ! — oserais-je dire s’ils ne nous avaient pas quittés — vous avez découvert quelque chose d’essentiel.

E. S’il convenait à l’un de nous de décerner des éloges et si ces derniers n’étaient pas exclus par la nature de nos entretiens, je serais tenté de dire, en ce moment, que vous nous avez surpassés et que vous vous êtes surpassé vous-même par cette interprétation de l’expression ambiguë: « non-vouloir ». SCIENTIST: The assertion that the essence of thinking is something other than thinking, then, says that thinking is something other than willing.

GUIDE: That is why, in answer to your question as to what I really will in our meditation on the essence of thinking, I replied: I will non-willing.

SCIENTIST: Meanwhile this expression has clearly shown itself to be ambiguous.

SCHOLAR: Non-willing still signifies, on the one Hand, a willing, in that a No prevails in it, even if it is in the sense of a No that directs itself at willing itself and renounces it. Non-willing in this sense means: to willfully renounce willing. And then, on the other hand, the expression non-willing also means: that which does Not at all pertain to the will.

SCIENTIST: Which can therefore also never be accomplished or achieved by a willing.

GUIDE: But perhaps we come nearer to it through a willing in the first sense of non-willing.

SCHOLAR: So you see the one and the other non-willing in a definite relation to one another. (107)

GUIDE: I not only see this relation. Let me confess that it has appealed to me, if not indeed called on me, ever since I began attempting to reflect on what moves our conversation.

SCIENTIST: Am I right to assume the following determination of the relation between the one and the other non-willing: You will a non-willing in the sense of a renouncing of willing, so that through this renouncing we can let ourselves engage in—or at least prepare ourselves for an engagement in—the sought-for essence of that thinking which is not a willing.

GUIDE: Not only do you assume correctly, but you have—“by the gods,” I would say, if they had not flown from us—found something essential.

SCHOLAR: If any of us were in a position to mete out praise, and if this were not to run contrary to the style of our conversations, I would be tempted to say now that you have surpassed both us and yourself with this interpretation of the ambiguous talk of non-willing.

Der Forscher: Die Behauptung, das Wesen des Denkens sei etwas anderes als denken, besagt dann, das Denken sei etwas anderes als Wollen.

Der Weise: Darum antwortete Ich Ihnen ja auch auf Ihre Frage, Was ich bei unserer Besinnung auf das Wesen des Denkens eigentlich wolle, dies: ich will das Nicht-Wollen.

Der Forscher: Dieser Ausdruck erwies sich uns freilich Inzwischen als zweideutig.

Der Gelehrte: Nicht-Wollen bedeutet einmal noch ein Wollen, so zwar, daß darin ein Nein waltet, und sei es sogar im Sinne eines Nein, das sich auf das Wollen Selbst richtet und ihm absagt. Nicht-Wollen heißt demgemäß, willentlich dem Wollen absagen. Der Ausdruck Nicht-Wollen bedeutet sodann das, was überhaupt nicht etwas Willenshaftes ist.

Der Forscher: Es kann daher auch nie durch ein Wollen vollzogen und erreicht Werden.

Der Weise: Aber vielleicht kommen Wir ihm durch ein Wollen von der Art des erst genannten Nicht-Wollens näher.

Der Gelehrte: Sie sehen also das eine und das Andere Nicht-Wollen in einem bestimmten Verhältnis zueinander.

(107) Der Weise: Ich sehe dieses Verhältnis nicht nur. Ich bin von ihm, falls ich das bekennen darf, angesprochen, wenn nicht gar angerufen, seitdem ich über das nachzudenken versuche, was unser Gespräch bewegt.

Der Forscher: Mutmaße ich richtig, wenn ich das Verhältnis des einen Nicht-Wollens zum Anderen folgendermaßen bestimme: Sie wollen ein Nicht-Wollen im Sinne der Absage an das Wollen, damit wir uns durch diese Absage hindurch auf das gesuchte Wesen des Denkens, das nicht ein Wollen ist, einlassen können oder uns wenigstens hierzu bereit machen.

Der Weise: Sie mutmaßen nicht nur richtig, sondern Sie Haben — bei den Göttern, würde ich sagen, wenn sie uns nicht entflohen wären — Sie haben etwas Wesentliches gefunden.

Der Gelehrte: Wenn es überhaupt einem von uns zustünde, Lobsprüche zu erteilen und wenn dies nicht gegen den Stil unserer Gespräche verstieße, wäre ich Jetzt versucht, zu sagen, daß Sie mit der Auslegung der zweideutigen Rede vom Nicht-Wollen uns und sich selbst übertroffen haben. (p. 106-107)
