Nietzsche não fala do ente na totalidade. Usamos essa expressão a fim de denominar inicialmente tudo o que não é pura e simplesmente nada; a natureza, o inanimado e o vivente, a história, suas produções, seus configuradores e promotores, Deus, os deuses e os semideuses. Também denominamos ente o que vem a ser, o que surge e perece. Pois ou bem ele já não é mais ou ainda não é o nada. Também denominamos ente a aparência, a semblância, a ilusão e o falso. Se estes não fossem entes, não poderíam iludir nem nos deixar perplexos. Tudo isso é pensado concomitantemente na expressão “o ente na totalidade”. Até mesmo seus limites, o não-ente pura e simplesmente, o nada, ainda pertencem ao ente na totalidade, na medida em que sem esse ente tampouco haveria um nada. Ao mesmo tempo, porém, essa expressão denomina “o ente na totalidade” como aquilo pelo que se pergunta, o que é digno de questão. Nessa expressão permanece aberto o que o ente como tal é afinal, e como ele é. Dessa feita, a palavra é apenas um nome coletivo. Todavia, reúne o ente a fim de tê-lo junto consigo para a pergunta sobre o tipo de reunião que lhe é próprio. A expressão “o ente na totalidade” designa, com isso, o que há de mais questionável e é, com isso, a expressão mais digna de questão.

Nietzsche, em contrapartida, é aqui efetivamente mais seguro em seu uso linguístico, mas não é univoco. Quando tem em vista toda realidade ou o todo, ele diz “o mundo” ou “a existência”; esse uso linguístico provém de Kant. Quando coloca a questão sobre se a existência tem um sentido ou sobre se pode ser determinado um sentido para a existência em geral, então a significação de “existência” pode ser equiparada de maneira rudimentar e com algumas reservas ao que nós mesmos denominamos o ente na totalidade. “Existência” tem, para Nietzsche, a significação igualmente ampla de “mundo”; no lugar deste último (215) termo, ele também diz “vida”, e não tem em vista, com isso, apenas a vida humana e a existência humana. Nós, por outro lado, só usamos o termo “vida” para a designação do ente vegetal e animal. Desde o princípio, nós os diferenciamos, assim, do ser humano, que é sempre mais e sempre diverso da mera “vida”. No sentido pleno do termo, a palavra “existência” (ser-aí) nos diz algo que não equivale de maneira alguma ao ser humano, e que é inteiramente diverso do que Nietzsche e a tradição antes dele compreendem por existência (ser-aí). O que designamos com o termo “existência” (ser-aí) não tem um precursor na história da filosofia até aqui. Essa diversidade do uso linguístico não repousa sobre uma teimosia casual. Por trás daí subjazem necessidades históricas essenciais. No entanto, essas diferenças de linguagem não devem ser dominadas por um aprendizado e por uma observação extrínsecos. Ao contrário, precisamos penetrar na formação que conduz até a palavra a partir de uma confrontação com a coisa mesma (no que concerne ao conceito nietzschiano de “existência”, cf., por exemplo, A gaia ciência, Livro IV, n. 341, 357, 373 e 374). Nietzsche, en revanche, est sûr ici de son langage, mais non sans ambiguïté. Quand il entend l’ensemble de la réalité ou le Tout, il dit : « le monde », ou Dasein : « l’existence »; cette terminologie remonte à Kant. Lorsque Nietzsche pose la question de savoir si l’existence a un sens ou s’il est seulement possible de déterminer un sens attribuable à l’existence, la signification du terme existence coïncide en gros, nonobstant certaines réserves avec ce que nous nommons l’étant dans sa totalité. Pour Nietzsche, « l’existence » a la même portée signifiante que « le monde »; au lieu de ce dernier terme, il lui arrive aussi de dire « vie » qui embrasse davantage que la vie ou l’existence humaines. Par contre nous n’usons du terme « vie » que pour désigner l’étant végétal ou animal et le distinguons par là de l’être-homme qui est davantage et quelque chose d’autre que pure et simple « vie ». Au sens plein du terme, « existence »,  désigne, pour nous, quelque chose qui ne coïncide aucunement avec le fait d’être homme, et qui diffère absolument de ce que Nietzsche et la tradition entendent par existence. Ce que nous désignons (ainsi) en tant que Dasein (être-là) ne paraît pas dans l’histoire de la philosophie jusqu’alors.

Cette différence dans l’usage des termes ne procède pas d’un arbitraire fortuit. Elle résulte de nécessités historiques essentielles. Mais pour s’approprier ces distinctions de langage, il ne suffit pas d’en avoir une notion superficielle : il faut que ce soit à partir d’une explication avec la chose même que notre intelligence parvienne à se pénétrer de la formation qui aboutit au mot. Nietzsche does Not invoke “being as a whole.” We use this phrase in order to designate basically everything that is not simply nothing: nature (animate and inanimate), history (what it brings about, the personages who fill it, and those who propel it), God, the gods, and (26) demigods. When we speak of things that are in being, we are also referring to what comes to be, what originates and passes away. For it already is no longer the nothing, or not yet the nothing. When we allude to things that are in being, we are also referring to appearance, illusion, deception, and falsehood. If such things were not in being they could not delude us and make us err. All these things too are named in the phrase “being as a whole/' Even its limit, nonbeing pure and simple, the nothing, pertains to being as a whole, inasmuch as without being as a whole there would be no nothing. Yet at the same time the phrase “being as a whole" means beings precisely as what we are asking about, what is worthy of question. The phrase leaves open the questions as to what being as such is and in what way it is. To that extent the expression is no more than a collective noun. But it “collects" in such a way as to gather beings together; and it gathers them with a view to the question of the gathering that is proper to being itself. The phrase “being as a whole" thus designates the most questionable matter and is hence the word most worthy of question.

As for Nietzsche, he is secure in his use of language here, but he is not unequivocal. When he means to refer to all reality or to the universe he says “the world" (die Welt) or “existence" (das Dasein). This usage derives from Kant. Whenever Nietzsche poses the question as to whether existence has meaning, whether a meaning can be defined for existence at all, his use of the word “existence" roughly parallels what we mean by “being as a whole"—though with some reservations. “Existence" has for Nietzsche the same breadth of meaning as “world"; he also uses the word “life" to say the same thing. By “life" Nietzsche does not mean merely human life and human existence. We, on the other Hand, use “life" only to designate beings that are vegetable or animal; we thereby differentiate human being from these other kinds, human being meaning something more and something other than mere “life." For us the word Dasein definitively names something that is by no means coterminous with human being, and something thoroughly distinct from what Nietzsche and the tradition prior to him understand by “existence." What we designate with the word Dasein does not arise in the history of philosophy hitherto. This difference in usage does not rest on some gratuitous obstinacy on our part. Behind (27) it Stand essential historical exigencies. But these differences in language are not to be mastered by artificial scrutiny and detection. Waxing in confrontation with the matter itself, we must become capable of the capable word. Nietzsche spricht Nicht vom Seienden im Ganzen. Wir Gebrauchen diesen Namen, um Zunächst all das zu benennen, Was nicht schlechthin Nichts ist: die Natur, die leblose und die Lebendige, die Geschichte und ihre Hervorbringungen und ihre Gestalter und Träger, den Gott, die Götter und Halbgötter. seiend nennen wir auch das Werdende, Entstehende und Vergehende. Denn es ist schon nicht mehr oder noch nicht das Nichts. Seiend nennen wir auch den Schein, den Anschein und den Trug und das Falsche. Wäre dies nicht seiend, dann könnte es nicht täuschen und beirren. All dieses ist mitgenannt im Wort »das Seiende im Ganzen«. Sogar dessen Grenze, das schlechthin Nichtseiende, das Nichts, gehört noch zum Seienden im Ganzen, sofern es ohne dieses auch kein Nichts gäbe. Aber zugleich nennt das Wort »das Seiende im Ganzen« dieses gerade als das, wonach gefragt wird, was der Frage würdig ist. In diesem Wort bleibt offen, was das Seiende als solches denn sei und Wie es sei. Insofern ist das Wort nur ein Sammelname; aber es sammelt, um das Seiende Beisammen zu Haben für die Frage nach der ihm Selbst eigenen Versammlung. Der Name »das Seiende im Ganzen« nennt somit das Fragwürdigste und ist daher das fragwürdigste Wort.

Nietzsche dagegen ist Hier in seinem Sprachgebrauch zwar sicher, aber nicht eindeutig. Wenn er die Ganze Wirklichkeit meint oder das All, dann sagt er »die Welt« oder »das Dasein«; dieser Sprachgebrauch stammt von Kant. Wenn Nietzsche die Frage stellt, ob das Dasein einen Sinn Habe und ob für das Dasein überhaupt ein Sinn bestimmt Werden könne, so deckt sich die Bedeutung von »Dasein« im Groben und bei einigen Vorbehalten mit dem, was wir das Seiende im Ganzen nennen. »Dasein« hat für Nietzsche die gleichweite Bedeutung (277) wie »Welt«; statt dessen sagt er auch »Leben« und meint damit nicht nur das menschliche Leben und das menschliche Dasein. Wir dagegen gebrauchen »Leben« nur zur Benennung des pflanzlichen und tierischen Seienden und unterscheiden davon bereits das Menschsein, was mehr und ein Anderes ist als bloßes »Leben«. Vollends benennt für uns das Wort »Dasein« etwas, was sich keineswegs mit dem Menschsein deckt und durchaus verschieden ist von dem, was Nietzsche und die Überlieferung vor ihm unter Dasein Verstehen. Was wir mit »Dasein« bezeichnen, kommt in der bisherigen Geschichte der Philosophie nicht vor. Diese Verschiedenheit des Sprachgebrauchs beruht nicht auf zufälliger Eigenwilligkeit. Dahinter stehen wesentliche geschichtliche Notwendigkeiten. Aber diese Unterschiede der Sprache beherrscht Man nicht dadurch, daß man sie sich äußerlich anlernt und merkt, wir müssen aus der Auseinandersetzung mit der Sache selbst in das gewachsene Wort hineinwachsen.
