A expressão “vontade de poder” denomina o caráter fundamental do ente; todo ente que é, na medida em que é, é: vontade de poder. Com isso enuncia-se o caráter do ente como ente. A partir daí, porém, não se responde absolutamente à primeira pergunta da filosofia, à sua pergunta propriamente dita. Ao contrário, só se responde aqui à última pergunta preliminar. Para aquele que ainda pode e precisa perguntar filosoficamente no fim da filosofia ocidental, a pergunta decisiva não é mais a mera pergunta sobre o caráter fundamental que é manifesto pelo ente, a pergunta sobre como o ser do ente é caracterizado, mas sim a pergunta: o que é esse ser mesmo? A pergunta decisiva é, nesse caso, a pergunta sobre o "sentido do ser", e não apenas sobre o ser do ente; e o termo "sentido" está aí circunscrito de maneira rigorosa em seu conceito como aquilo desde onde e em razão do que o ser em geral se torna manifesto como tal e pode chegar à verdade. O que se propõe hoje em dia como ontologia não tem nada a ver com a questão do ser propriamente dita. Ele não passa de uma dissecação muito erudita e astuta que joga os conceitos transmitidos uns contra os outros.

The expression “will to power” designates the basic character of beings; any being which is, insofar as it is, is will to power. The expression stipulates the character that beings have as beings. But that is Not at all an answer to the first question of philosophy, its proper question; rather, it answers only the final preliminary question. For anyone who at the end of Western philosophy can and must still question philosophically, the decisive question is no longer merely “What basic character do beings manifest?” or “How may the Being of beings be characterized?” but “What is this ‘Being’ itself?” The decisive question is that of “the meaning of Being,” not merely that of the Being of beings. “Meaning” is thereby clearly delineated conceptually as that from which and on the grounds of which Being in general can become manifest as such and can come into truth. What is proffered today as ontology has nothing to do with the question of Being proper; it is a very learned and very astute analysis of transmitted concepts which plays them off, one against the other.

Der Ausdruck »Wille zur Macht« nennt den Grundcharakter des Seienden; jegliches Seiende, das ist, ist, sofern es ist: Wille zur Macht. Damit wird ausgesagt, welchen Charakter das Seiende als Seiendes hat. Aber damit ist noch gar Nicht die erste und eigentliche Frage der Philosophie beantwortet, sondern nur die letzte Vorfrage. Die entscheidende Frage ist für den, der überhaupt am Ende der abendländischen Philosophie noch philosophisch fragen kann und fragen muß, nicht mehr nur die, welchen Grundchaxakter das Seiende zeige, Wie das Sein des Seienden charakterisiert sei, sondern es ist die Frage: Was ist dieses Sein Selbst? Es ist die Frage nach dem »Sinn des Seins«, nicht nur nach dem Sein des Seienden; und »Sinn« ist dabei genau in seinem Begriff; umgrenzt als dasjenige, von Woher und auf Grund wovon das Sein überhaupt als solches Offenbar Werden und in die Wahrheit kommen kann. Was (26) heute als Ontologie angeboten wird, hat mit der eigentlichen Seinsfrage Nichts zu Tun. Es ist ein sehr gelehrtes und sehr scharfsinniges zergliedern und Gegeneinander-ausspielen der überkommenen Begriffe.
