Em que consiste essa essência da entidade, ou seja, ao mesmo tempo da visibilidade da ideia? A resposta é dada por essa ideia mesma, quando Platão a denomina agathon. Nós dizemos o «bem» e pensamos em termos morais cristãos no «bom» no sentido de: honesto, ordeiro, conforme às regras e às leis. Em termos gregos e mesmo ainda platônicos, agathon significa o que é apto, aquilo que é apto para algo e que torna mesmo uma outra coisa apta. A essência da idea é tornar apto, isto é, possibilitar o ente enquanto tal: possibilitar que ele ganhe a presença em meio ao desvelado. Por meio da interpretação platônica da idea como agathon, o ser se transforma naquilo que torna apto que o ente seja um ente. O ser mostra-se sob o caráter da possibilitação e do condicionamento. E aqui que se dá o passo decisivo para toda metafísica, um passo por meio do qual o caráter de a priori do ser obtém ao mesmo tempo a distinção de ser uma condição. (p. 170)

In what does the essence of beingness consist; that is to say, in what does the essence of the visuality of the idea consist? The “idea” itself gives the answer when Plato calls it agathon. We say “the Good” and think of “good” in Christian-moral fashion as meaning well-behaved, decent, in keeping with law and order. For the Greeks, and for Plato too, agathon means the suitable, what is good for something and itself makes something else worthwhile. It is the essence of idea to make suitable; that is, to make the being as such possible, that it may come to presence into the unconcealed. Through Plato’s interpretation of idea as agathon Being comes to be what makes a being fit to be a being. Being is shown in the character of making-possible and conditioning. Here the decisive step for all metaphysics is taken, through which the a priori character of Being at the same time receives the distinction of being a condition. (p. 169)

worin besteht dieses Wesen der Seiendheit, d. h. zugleich der Sichtsamkeit der Idee? Die Antwort gibt diese »Idee« Selbst, wenn Piaton sie agathon nennt. Wir sagen das »Gute« und denken christlich-moralisch »gut« im Sinne von: brav, ordentlich, der Regel und dem Gesetz gemäß. Griechisch und auch Platonisch noch heißt agathon das Taugliche, Was zu etwas taugt und selbst anderes tauglich Macht. Das Wesen der idea ist, tauglich zu machen, d. h. das Seiende als ein solches zu ermöglichen: daß es anwese in das Unverborgene. Durch Piatons Auslegung der idea als agathon wird das Sein zu dem, was das Seiende tauglich macht, Seiendes zu Sein. Sein zeigt sich im Charakter des Ermöglichens und Bedingens. Hier wird der für alle Metaphysik entscheidende Schritt getan, durch den der »apriori«-Charakter des Seins zugleich die Auszeichnung erhält, Bedingung zu sein. (p. 225-226)
