Já como concepção levada a termo pelo homem, toda concepção do ente e, sobretudo, do ente na totalidade está ligada ao homem. A ligação provém do homem. Toda interpretação de tal concepção é uma discriminação do modo como o homem finca pé no interior da concepção do ente e se coloca em relação a ela. Com isso, a interpretação é uma inserção de representações e modos de representação humanos no ente. Até mesmo a mera interpelação discursiva do ente, a denominação do ente por meio de palavras acaba por recobrir o ente com um construto humano, por aprisionar o ente no território humano – se é que a palavra e a linguagem realmente distinguem o homem em sentido extremo. Toda representação do ente na totalidade, toda interpretação do mundo é, com isso, incontornavelmente uma humanização.

Tais reflexões são tão elucidativas que quem as tiver acompanhado ainda que apenas de maneira rudimentar precisará ver como o homem é sempre impelido para o beco de sua própria humanidade com todas as suas representações, intuições e determinações do ente. Assim, é fácil tornar compreensível para o mais simplório dos homens o quanto toda representação humana nunca provém senão de algum canto desse beco, quer a representação do mundo tenha surgido de um grande pensador singular e normativo, quer ela aponte para a sedimentação das representações de grupos, épocas, povos e famílias de povos. Hegel explicitou esse fato por meio de uma referência irrefutável ao nosso uso linguístico, que dá ensejo a um jogo de palavras nada superficial ou forçado.

Todas as nossas representações e intuições são de tal forma que nós sempre visamos a algo (meinen) nelas: o ente. Em todo e qualquer visar, porém, eu transformo ao mesmo tempo incontornavelmente o que é visado em algo meu (zum Meinigen). Assim, todo visar que aparentemente só está ligado ao objeto transforma-se em um ato de tomada de possessão e de incorporação do que é (251) visado ao eu humano. Em si, visar significa, ao mesmo tempo: representar algo e transformar o representado em algo meu. No entanto, mesmo lá onde não é o “eu” individualizado que visa, onde aparentemente não prevalece a normatividade do pensamento de nenhum homem em particular, o perigo da subjetividade só é aparentemente superado. A humanização do ente na totalidade não é aqui menor, mas maior; e, em verdade, maior não apenas no que diz respeito à abrangência, mas antes de tudo também segundo o tipo, uma vez que ninguém chega mesmo a pressentir a humanização por meio da qual se estabelece a aparência inicialmente insuplantável de que nenhuma humanização está em jogo. Todavia, se a interpretação do mundo é inseparável da humanização, então não há a menor chance de se levar a termo a tentativa de desumanizar essa humanização; pois essa tentativa de desumanização é apenas uma vez mais uma tentativa do homem. Ou seja: ela é, por fim, uma humanização na potência.

Em particular para todos aqueles que se deparam pela primeira vez com caminhos similares de pensamento, essas reflexões são de um poder de convencimento avassalador. Se não nos desviamos imediatamente de tais pensamentos e nos salvamos por meio de uma fuga na “práxis” da “vida”, eles costumam nos levar para uma situação onde só restam, por fim, duas possibilidades: ou bem duvidamos e nos desesperamos quanto à presença de alguma possibilidade de verdade e só continuamos a tomar as coisas em geral como um jogo de representações, ou bem nos decidimos em termos de crença por uma interpretação de mundo de acordo com o princípio de que uma é sempre melhor do que nenhuma, por mais que ela nunca passe de uma entre muitas. Com um pouco de sorte talvez possamos demonstrar a sua legitimidade por meio de seu sucesso, de sua utilidade ou da amplitude de sua expansão.

As posturas essenciais ante a humanização tomada em si por insuperável são, consequentemente, as seguintes: ou bem nos havemos com isso e nos movimentamos na aparente superioridade daquele que duvida de tudo, que não se imiscui em nada e procura alcançar por meio daí a sua paz, ou bem buscamos esquecer a humanização e mantê-la afastada, alcançando, dessa forma, a nossa paz. Portanto, onde quer que a suspeita de humanização seja apresentada como insuperável, permanecemos presos a uma superficialidade, por mais facilmente que essas reflexões relativas à humanização possam dar a impressão de serem maximamente perspicazes e, antes de tudo, “críticas”. Que revelação não foi para a massa sem familiaridade com o real pensamento e com a sua história pura quando Spengler pensou ter descoberto pela primeira vez o fato de toda época e toda cultura ter a sua própria visão de mundo! Não obstante, tudo não passava de uma popularização muito hábil e astuta de ideias e questões que há muito – e por último com (252) Nietzsche – foram pensadas, mas que não foram e continuam até agora sem ser de modo algum dominadas. A razão para que isso tenha acontecido é tão simples quanto difícil de ser penetrada inteiramente em toda a sua gravidade.

Every conception of the being and especially of beings as a whole, merely by the fact that it is a conception, is related by human beings to human beings. The relation derives from Man. Every interpretation of such a conception discriminates among the ways man proceeds with his conception of the being and adopts a stance toward it. Interpretation is thereby a projection of human representations and modes of representation onto the being. Simply to address the being, to name it in the word, is to equip it with human paraphernalia, to seize it in human nets, if indeed it is true that the word and language in the broadest sense distinguish human being. Hence every representation of beings as a whole, every interpretation of the world, is inevitably anthropomorphic.

Such reflections are so lucid that whoever has engaged in them, no matter how cursorily, is compelled to see that for all their representations, intuitions, and definitions of beings human beings are cornered in the blind alley of their own humanity. We can make it perfectly clear to every Simple Simon that all human representation comes out (100) of this or that corner of the alley, whether it involves a notion of the world stemming from a single paramount and decisive thinker or a residue of notions gradually gaining in clarity for sundry groups, eras, peoples, and families of nations. Hegel shed light on the state of affairs in a striking reference to an aspect of our linguistic usage which gives occasion for a particular play on words, one that is Not at all superficial or forced.

All our representations and intuitions are such that in them we mean something, some being. Yet every time I mean or opine something I at the same time inevitably transform what is meant into something that is mine. Every such meaning, ostensibly related solely to the object itself, amounts to an act of appropriation and incorporation by and into the human ego of what is meant. To mean is in itself simultaneously to represent something and to make the represented something my own. But even when it is not the individualized “I” that means, when the standards prevailing in the thought of any individual human being presumably do not come to domineer, the danger of subjectivism is only apparently overcome. The humanization of beings as a whole is not slighter here but more massive, not only in scope but above all in kind, inasmuch as no one has the slightest inkling concerning such humanization. This gives rise to the initially inexpugnable illusion that no humanization is in play. But if humanization pertains to world interpretation ineluctably, then every attempt to dehumanize humanization is without prospect of success. The attempt to dehumanize is itself an attempt undertaken by human beings; hence it ultimately remains humanization, raised to a higher power.

These reflections, especially for someone who encounters them or (101) similar trains of thought for the first time, are staggeringly convincing. Provided a person does not immediately circumvent them and save him or herself by fleeing into the “praxis” of “life,” such reflections generally relegate one to a position where only two alternatives arise: either one doubts and despairs of every possibility of learning the truth and takes it all as a sheer play of representations, or one decides via a confession of faith for one world interpretation  –  following the maxim that one is better than none, even if it is merely one among others. Perhaps with a bit of luck the one we choose can prove its viability in terms of its success, its utility, and the range of its propagation.

The essential postures we may adopt toward a humanization that is held to be ineradicable in itself may therefore be reduced to two: either we make our peace with it and operate now in the apparent superiority of the Universal Doubter who cannot be hoodwinked and who desires only to be left alone, or we struggle to reach the point where we forget humanization and presume that it has thereby been brushed aside, in this way achieving our tranquillity. The result in either case is that wherever suspicions concerning immitigable humanization arise we find ourselves stuck on the superficies, however easily such reflections on humanization delude themselves into thinking that they are supremely profound and, above all, “critical.” What a revelation it Was for the Mass of people who were unfamiliar with actual thinking and its rich history when two decades ago, in 1917, Oswald Spengler announced that he was the first to discover that every age and every civilization has its own world view! Yet it was all nothing more than a very deft and clever popularization of thoughts and questions on which others long before him had ruminated far more profoundly. Nietzsche was the most recent of these. Yet no one by any means mastered these thoughts and questions, and they remain unmastered up to the present hour. The reason is as simple as it is momentous and difficult to think through.

Toute conception de l’étant, notamment de l’étant dans sa totalité est à l’avance, en tant que conçue par l’homme, rapportée à l’homme, rapport établi par celui-ci. Toute interprétation de pareille conception revient à une Analyse de la manière dont l’homme se retrouve dans sa conception de l’étant et se situe par rapport à celle-ci. Même toute parole adressée à l’étant, toute dénomination de l’étant par le langage est une façon de recouvrir l’étant d’une construction humaine, de capturer l’étant dans de l’humain, dès lors que le mot et le langage illustrent suprêmement l’être de la nature humaine. Toute représentation de l’étant dans sa totalité, toute interprétation du monde, de ce fait, est inévitable humanisation.

Pareilles réflexions sont d’une telle évidence que même qui ne les aurait faites que de façon grossière saura voir comment l’homme, malgré tout ce qu’il a pu se représenter, concevoir, déterminer au sujet de l’étant, se trouve toujours repoussé dans l’impasse de sa propre humanité. De cette manière, il est aisé de faire comprendre à l’individu le plus simple à quel point toute représentation humaine ne vient jamais que d’un angle quelconque de cette impasse, qu’il s’agisse de la conception du monde issue de la pensée particulière d’un grand penseur, faisant autorité, ou du résidu peu à peu transparent des représentations collectives de groupes, d’époques, de peuples ou de familles de peuples. Hegel a éclairci cet état de fait par une irréfutable référence à notre usage de la langue, qui donne lieu à un jeu de mots nullement superficiel ni contraint.

Tout notre représenter, tout notre concevoir est tel que par là, c’est quelque chose, l’étant, que nous entendons (meinen), que nous voulons dire. Or, par chaque Meinung, [litt. : opinion propre], je fais du même coup de la chose entendue, de celle que je veux dire, la mienne (Zum Meinigen). Tout meinen, tout vouloir dire, qui apparemment ne semble se référer qu’à l’objet même, devient une prise de possession, une appropriation et une intégration de la chose entendue, par le moi humain. Vouloir dire telle chose, entendre ceci ou cela est dans le même temps : me représenter quelque chose et m’approprier comme mien ce que je me représente. Mais là aussi, où ce n’est pas le « moi » isolé qui exprime une opinion, qui entend ceci ou cela, où apparemment l’autorité de la pensée d’un homme particulier n’arrive pas à prévaloir, le danger de la subjectivité n’est surmonté qu’en apparence.

(281) L’humanisation de l’étant dans sa totalité n’est pas ici moindre, mais plus grande, et cela non seulement quant à l’ampleur, mais quant à la manière dont elle se produit, pour autant que nul n’arrive seulement à se douter de l’humanisation, en sorte que s’établit d’abord l’impénétrable apparence qu’une humanisation n’ait pas même lieu. Mais si l’humanisation est inséparable de l’interprétation du monde, alors toute tentative pour déshumaniser cette humanisation est également sans issue; car cette tentative ne sera de nouveau qu’une tentative de l’homme, donc finalement une humanisation en puissance.

Ces réflexions exercent une force de persuasion irrésistible, particulièrement sur ceux qui découvrent pour la première fois des arguments analogues. Si l’individu qu’elles impressionnent, ne les élude aussitôt par une fuite dans la « pratique » de la « vie », elles l’acculent le plus souvent à cette alternative : ou bien l’on doute et l’on désespère de toute possibilité de vérité, et l’on ne prend toutes choses autrement que pour un jeu de représentation; ou bien l’on se décide, conformément à un acte de foi, pour une interprétation du monde, en vertu du principe que mieux en vaut une qu’aucune, bien que cette unique interprétation ne soit jamais qu’une interprétation, mais qui se pourrait légitimer peut-être par son succès et son utilité, et par l’ampleur de son expansion.

Les attitudes essentielles prises à l’égard de l’humanisation, tenue en soi pour insurmontable, sont de ce fait les deux suivantes : ou bien l’on en prend son parti et l’on adopte l’apparente supériorité du douteur de toutes choses, du sceptique qui ne se fie à rien et ne désire que sa tranquillité; ou bien l’on en vient jusqu’à oublier l’humanisation, l’estimant de la sorte supprimée, et l’on trouve sa tranquillité à ce prix. De ce fait, à chaque fois que ce doute eu égard à l’humanisation est donné comme irréductible, on reste simplement englué dans le superficiel,  –  si facile qu’il soit à ceux qui émettent ce genre de réflexions de prendre l’apparence d’esprits on ne saurait plus profonds, ni surtout plus « critiques ». Quand, voici une vingtaine d’années  (1917), Spengler crut avoir été le premier à découvrir que chaque époque, chaque civilisation, chaque culture avait eu sa propre conception du monde, Quelle révélation ce fut alors pour la foule de tous ceux qui n’avaient jamais été familiarisés avec la pensée authentique et les richesses de son histoire! Et nonobstant, Spengler n’apportait rien qu’une fort habile et spirituelle vulgarisation de pensées et de questions depuis longtemps soulevées et méditées de façon (282) plus profonde  –  en dernier lieu par Nietzsche lui-même  –  mais nullement résolues pour autant, et qui, Aujourd’hui même, sont encore loin de l’être. La raison de tout cela est aussi simple que difficile à pénétrer dans toute sa gravité.

Jede Auffassung des Seienden und zumal des Seienden im Ganzen ist schon als Auffassung durch den Menschen auf den Menschen bezogen, der Bezug kommt vom Menschen her. Jede Auslegung einer solchen Auffassung ist ein auseinanderlegen der Weise, Wie der Mensch sich in der Auffassung des Seienden zurechtfindet und zu ihr sich stellt. Die Auslegung ist somit ein Hineinlegen menschlicher Vorstellungen und Vorstellungsweisen in das Seiende. Sogar jedes bloße ansprechen des Seienden, jedes Nennen des Seienden im Wort ist ein Belegen des Seienden mit einem menschlichen Gebilde, ein Einfangen des Seienden in Menschliches, wenn anders das Wort und die Sprache im höchsten Sinne das Menschsein auszeichnen. Jede Vorstellung des Seienden im Ganzen, jede Weltauslegung ist daher unausweichlich Vermenschlichung.

Solche Überlegungen sind so einleuchtend, daß, Wer sie auch nur im groben nachvollzogen hat, sehen muß, wie der Mensch mit all seinem vorstellen, Anschauen und bestimmen des Seienden immer in die Sackgasse seiner eigenen Menschlichkeit gedrängt wird. Dem Einfältigsten ist auf solche Weise einleuchtend zu machen, wie sehr alles menschliche Vorstellen immer nur aus irgendeiner Ecke dieser Sackgasse herkommt, mag die Weltvorstellung aus dem denken eines einzelnen großen, maßgebenden Denkers kommen, mag sie der sich allmählich klärende Niederschlag der Vorstellungen von Gruppen, Zeitaltern, Völkern und Völkerfamilien Sein. Hegel hat diesen Tatbestand durch einen schlagenden Hinweis auf unseren Sprachgebrauch verdeutlicht, der Anlaß gibt zu einem ganz und gar Nicht oberflächlichen und verzwungenen Wortspiel.

All unser Vorstellen und Anschauen ist so, daß Wir darin etwas, das Seiende, meinen. In jeder Meinung aber mache Ich das Gemeinte zugleich und unausweichlich zum Meinigen. Alles Meinen, das scheinbar nur auf den Gegenstand Selbst bezogen ist, wird zu einer Besitznahme und Hereinnahme des Gemeinten in das menschliche Ich. Meinen ist in sich zugleich: etwas vorstellen und das Vorgestellte zu dem Meinigen machen. Aber auch dort, wo nicht das vereinzelte »Ich« meint, wo scheinbar die Maßgeblichkeit des Denkens eines einzelnen Menschen nicht zur Geltung kommt, ist die Gefahr der Subjektivität nur scheinbar überwunden. Die Vermenschung des Seienden im Ganzen ist Hier nicht geringer sondern größer, und zwar größer nicht nur dem Umfang nach, sondern vor Allem auch der Art nach, sofern Niemand die Vermenschung auch nur ahnt, wodurch der Zunächst un-aufhebliche Schein erwächst, als sei eine Vermenschung nicht im Spiel. Wenn aher zur Weltauslegung unentrinnbar die Vermenschung gehört, dann ist auch jeder Versuch aussichtslos, diese Vermenschung entmenschen zu Wollen; denn dieser Versuch der Entmenschung ist nur wieder ein Versuch des Menschen, also schließlich eine Vermenschung in der Potenz.

Diese Überlegungen sind, insbesondere für alle, die erstmals solchen und ähnlichen Gedankengängen begegnen, von einer schlagenden Überzeugungskraft. Sie bringen den Menschen, wenn er nicht sogleich vor solchen Gedanken ausweicht und sich durch eine Flucht in die »Praxis« des »Lebens« rettet, meist in eine Lage, wo nur zwei Möglichkeiten bestehen: entweder man zweifelt und verzweifelt an jeder Möglichkeit einer Wahrheit und nimmt alles nur noch als ein Spiel von Vorstellungen; oder man entscheidet sich glaübensmäßig für eine Weltauslegung nach dem Grundsatz, daß eine besser ist als keine, obwohl die eine auch nur eine ist, aber ihr recht vielleicht aus dem Erfolg und Nutzen und dem Umfang der Verbreitung belegen kann.

Die wesentlichen Haltungen gegenüber der an sich für unüberwindbar gehaltenen Vermenschung sind demnach die beiden folgenden: Entweder findet man sich damit ab und bewegt sich in der scheinbaren Überlegenheit des Zweiflers an allem, der sich auf Nichts einläßt und seine Ruhe Haben will; oder man bringt sich dahin, daß man die Vermenschung vergißt und sie damit für beseitigt hält und auf diese Art seine Ruhe hat. Überall demnach, wo das bedenken der Vermenschung als unüberwindliches vorgebracht wird, bleibt man jedesmal in einer Oberflächlichkeit stecken, so leicht diese Überlegungen bezüglich der Vermenschung sich auch den Anschein geben, als seien sie im höchsten Grade tiefsinnig und vor allem »kritisch«. Welche Offenbarung war es vor zwei Jahrzehnten (1917) für die Menge derer, die mit dem wirklichen Denken und seiner reichen Geschichte unvertraut sind, als Spengler erstmals entdeckt zu haben glaubte, daß jedes Zeitalter und jede Kultur ihre eigene Weltanschauung haben! Gleichwohl war alles nur eine sehr geschickte und geistreiche Popularisierung von Gedanken und Fragen, die längst — und zuletzt von Nietzsche — tiefer gedacht, aber keineswegs bewältigt wurden und bis zur Stunde nicht bewältigt sind. Der Grund dafür ist ebenso einfach wie schwerwiegend und schwer zu durchdenken.
