O que diz επιστήμη? O verbo que lhe corresponde é έπίστασθαι, colocar-se diante de alguma coisa, ali permanecer e deparar-se, a fim de que ela se mostre em sua visão, έπίστασις significa também permanecer diante de algo, dar atenção a alguma coisa. Esse estar diante de algo numa permanência atenta, επιστήμη, propicia e encerra em si o fato de nós nos tornarmos e sermos cientes daquilo diante do que assim nos colocamos. Sendo cientes podemos, portanto, tender para (vorstehen) a coisa em causa, diante da qual e na qual permanecemos na atenção. Poder tender para a coisa significa entender-se com ela. Traduzimos επιστήμη, episthéme, por “entender-se com-alguma-coisa”. (p. 204)

What does ἐπιστήμη mean? The corresponding verb is ἐπίστασθαι, which means to place oneself before something, to linger with it and Stand before it, so that it may show itself within its own aspect. ἐπίστασις also means the action of lingering before something, attending to it. This attendant lingering before something, ἐπιστήμη, yields and entails that we become, and then are, acquainted with that before which we stand. Thus acquainted with the matter in front of which, and toward which, we attentively and lingeringly stand, we are able to stand before it. Being able to stand before a matter: this means to understand it. We thereby translate ἐπιστήμη as “to-understand-something.”

Was heißt έπιστήμη? Das dazugehörige Zeitwort lautet έπίστασθαι, d. h. sich vor etwas stellen, dabei Verweilen und davor stehen, damit es sich in seinem Anblick zeige, έπίστασις bedeutet u. a. das Verweilen vor etwas, das Aufmerken darauf. Dieses aufmerkende verweilende Vor-etwas-stehen, έπιστήμη, ergibt und schließt in sich, daß Wir dessen, Wovor wir so stehen, (192) kundig Werden und kundig sind. Wir können, also kundig, der betreffenden Sache, vor der wir und zu der wir aufmerkend verweilend stehen, vorstehen.
