Que os gregos eram “homens visuais”, para os quais o olho tinha uma grande prioridade, o que isso contribui para uma elucidação da essência da verdade como desencobrimento, abertura e (208) iluminação? Isso não contribui em nada, pois não pode ter a mínima significação. Esse fato não pode significar nada, pois o funcionamento factual do olho não dá nenhuma informação, e não pode dar informação alguma sobre a relação do homem com os entes. O que é precisamente um “olho” sem sua habilidade para ver? Nós não vemos porque temos olhos, mas temos olhos porque podemos “ver”. Mas o que significa “ver”? Sobre isso compreendemos, segundo o mais amplo conceito, do qual também toda “ótica” física, fisiológica e estética se funda, um encontro imediato com entes, coisas, animais e outros homens, na luz. O que, no entanto, nos acrescenta alguma luz, não importa quão luminosa, e o que poderia fazer um instrumento ótico, não importa quão refinado e multidimensional, se o próprio poder de ver não avistasse de antemão os entes através do instrumento do sentido visual e por meio da luz? Do mesmo modo como o olho sem a habilidade de ver não é nada, assim a habilidade de ver, por sua parte, permanece uma inabilidade se ela não vem para o jogo numa relação já estabelecida do homem com os entes visíveis. Mas como poderiam os entes aparecer para o homem, se o homem já não se relacionasse essencialmente com os entes enquanto entes? Mas como pode vigorar esta relação do homem com os entes enquanto entes, se o homem não está em relação com o ser? Se o homem já não tivesse o ser em vista, então não poderia nem simplesmente pensar o nada, e muito menos experimentar os entes. Mas como deve o homem permanecer nesta relação com o ser, se o próprio ser não se dirige ao homem e não exige sua essência para a relação do homem com o ser? Mas que outra coisa é esta relação do ser com a essência humana do que a iluminação e o aberto, que se têm iluminado eles mesmos para o desencoberto? Se uma tal iluminação não vigorasse como o aberto do próprio ser, então o olho humano não poderia jamais tornar-se e ser o que é, ou seja, o modo como o homem vê no comportamento os entes que encontra, um comportamento no qual os entes se revelam. Uma vez que a essência primordial da verdade é “desencobrimento” (ά-λήθεια), e uma vez que ἀλήθεια já é no encoberto o aberto e autoluminoso, então a iluminação e sua transparência podem aparecer como tal na configuração do iluminar da claridade e de sua transparência. Somente porque a essência do ser é ἀλήθεια, pode a luz da iluminação alcançar uma prioridade. Por isso a emergência (209) para o aberto recebe o caráter do brilhar e aparecer. Por isso a percepção da emergência e do desencoberto é uma percepção do que brilha iluminado, isto é, o ver e o vislumbrar. Apenas por isso, porque o vislumbrar é exigido desse modo, pode “o olho” receber uma prioridade. Não porque o olho é “ensolarado” (sonnenhaft), mas porque o sol, enquanto ele próprio é radiante da luz e da essência da ἀλήθεια, por isso pode o olho do homem “vislumbrar” e tornar-se sinal para a relação do homem com o desencoberto como tal. Porque a essência da verdade e do ser é a ἀλήθεια, o aberto, por isso podiam os gregos usar o “olho” para caracterizar a relação essencial do homem com os entes — isto é, a ψυχή, a alma — e podiam falar do ομμα τής ψυχής, do “olho da alma”. That the Greeks were visual, that they were “eye-people," what does this contnbute to an elucidation of the essence of truth as unconcealedness, openness, and clearing? It does Not contnbute anything, because it cannot have the least significance. That fact can not mean anything, because the factual functioning of the eyes does not give any information, and cannot give any information, about the relation of Man to beings. What is just an “eye" without the ability to see? We do not (146) [GA54:217-218] see because we have eyes, but we have eyes because we can "see." But what does it mean to "see"? We understand it, in a very broad sense, as the foundation for all physical, physiological, and aesthetic "optics": namely, it is what allows for an immediate encounter with beings, things, animals, and other people, in the light. Of what help, however, would any light be, no matter how luminous, and what could any optical instrument do, no matter how refined and accommodating, if the power to see did not itself in advance get a being in sight by means of the visual sense and the medium of the light? Just as the eye without the ability to see is nothing, so the ability to see, for its part, remains an "inability" if it does not come into play in an already established relation of man to visible beings. And how could beings be supposed to appear to man, if man did not already relate in his essence to beings as beings? And how could such a relation of man to beings as such hold sway if man did not Stand in a relation to Being? If man did not already have Being in view, then he could not even think the nothing, let alone experience beings, And how is man supposed to stand in this relation to Being if Being itself does not address man and claim his essence for the relation to Being? But what else is this relation of Being to the essence of man than the clearing and the open which has lighted itself for the unconcealed? If such clearing did not come into play as the open of Being itself, then a human eye could never become and be what it is, namely the way man looks at the demeanor of the encountering being, the demeanor as a look in which the being is revealed. Since the primordial essence of truth is "unconcealedness" (ά-λήδεια), and since άλήδεια is already in the concealed the open and the self-luminous, therefore the clearing and its transparency can altogether appear in the form of the lighting of brightness and of its transparency. Only because the essence of Being is ἀλήθεια can the light of the lighting achieve a priority That is why the emergence into the open has the character of shining and appearing. And that is why the perception of what emerges and is unconcealed is a perception of something shining in the light, i.e., it is seeing and looking. Only because looking is claimed in this way can the "eye" receive a priority. It is not because the eye is "sun-like," but it is because the sun as what is radiant itself is of the light and is of the essence of άλήδεια, that the eye of man can "look" and can become a sign for the relation of man to the unconcealed in general. Because the essence of truth and of Being is άλήδεια, the open, the Greeks could use the eye to characterize the essential relation of man to beings (i.e., ψυχή, the soul) and could speak of the ομμα τής ψυχής, the "eye of the soul." Es sagt gar Nichts, weil es Nicht das geringste bedeuten kann. Diese Tatsache kann nichts bedeuten, weil das tatsächliche Fungieren von Augen keinen Aufschluß gibt und keinen Aufschluß geben kann über den Bezug des Menschen zum Seienden, Was ist schon ein »Auge« ohne das Sehenkönnen? Wir sehen nicht, weil wir Augen Haben, sondern wir haben Augen, weil wir »sehen« können. Was aber heißt »sehen«? Darunter Verstehen wir nach dem weitesten Begriff, auf den auch alle physikalische, physiologische und ästhetische »Optik« sich gründet, ein unmittelbares Begegnenlassen von Seiendem, Dingen, Lebendem, Menschen im Licht. Was hilft jedoch alles noch so leuchtende Licht und was vermag alles noch so feine und wendige Sehwerkzeug, wenn nicht durch Sinneswerkzeug und Lichtmedium hindurch das Sehenkönnen Selbst zuvor eines Seienden ansichtig geworden ist? So Wie das Auge ohne ein Sehenkönnen nichts ist, so bleibt das Sehenkönnen seinerseits ein Unvermögen, wenn es nicht schon in einer Beziehung des Menschen zum erblickbaren Seienden schwingt. Wie aber soll dem Menschen ein Seiendes Erscheinen, wenn der Mensch nicht im Wesen schon zu Seiendem als einem Seienden sich verhält? Wie aber soll dieses Verhältnis des Menschen zum Seienden als einem solchen Walten, wenn nicht der Mensch im Bezug steht zum Sein? Hätte der Mensch nicht schon das Sein im Blick, dann könnte er nicht einmal das Nichts denken, geschweige denn Seiendes erfahren. Wie soll der Mensch aber in diesem Bezug zum Sein stehen, wenn nicht das Sein selbst den Menschen anspricht und sein Wesen für den Bezug zum Sein in den Anspruch nimmt? Was anderes aber ist dieser Bezug des Seins zum Menschenwesen als die Lichtung und das Offene, das sich für Unverborgenes überhaupt gelichtet hat? Weste nicht solche Lichtung als das Offene des Seins selbst, dann könnte niemals ein menschliches Auge Werden und sein, was es ist, nämlich die Weise, wie der Mensch das Aussehen des begegnenden Seienden als einen Anblick erblickt, in dem sich Seiendes entbirgt. Weil Anfänglich das Wesen der Wahrheit »Unverborgenheit« (ά-λήθει,α) und weil die ἀλήθεια im Verborgenen schon das Offene und Sichlichtende ist, deshalb kann die Lichtung und (218) ihr Durchlaß überhaupt erscheinen in der Gestalt des lichten der Helle und ihrer Durchsichtigkeit. Weil das Wesen des Seins die ἀλήθεια ist, deshalb allein kann das Lichte des Lichtes in einen Vorrang kommen. Deshalb erhält das Aufgehen ins Offene den Charakter des Scheinens und Erscheinens. Deshalb ist das Vernehmen des Aufgehenden und Unverborgenen ein Vernehmen des lichten Scheinenden, d. h. das Sehen und das blicken. Erst deshalb, weil dergestalt das Blicken in Anspruch genommen wird, kann »das Auge« in den Vorrang kommen. Nicht weil das Auge »sonnenhaft«, sondern weil die Sonne als das Leuchtende selbst lichtungshaft und vom Wesen der ἀλήθεια ist, deshalb kann das Auge des Menschen »blicken« und zum Zeichen werden für den Bezug des Menschen zum Unverborgenen überhaupt. Weil das Wesen der Wahrheit und des Seins die ἀλήθεια, das Offene ist, deshalb konnten die Griechen den Wesensbezug des Menschen zum Seienden, d. h. die ψυχή, die Seele, durch das »Auge« auszeichnen und vom ομμα της ψνχής. vom »Auge der Seele«, Sprechen.
