A lo que «es» no sólo pertenece de modo directo, para nosotros, lo realmente efectivo, lo que nos castiga y acosa: los sucesos, destinos y obras de los hombres, la naturaleza en su regularidad y catástrofes, las fuerzas apenas aprehensibles que están presentes en todos los impulsos y metas, en todas las valoraciones y en todas las actitudes basadas en la fe. A lo que «es» también pertenece, para nosotros, lo posible, lo que aguardamos, esperamos y tememos, lo que sólo presentimos, aquello ante lo que retrocedémos y que, sin embargo, no dejamos escapar. Es verdad que lo posible es lo todavía ng realmente efectivo, pero esta cosa no efectiva no es para nosotros, sin embargo, algo nulo. También lo posible «es», sólo que su ser tiene otro carácter que el de lo realmente efectivo.

A su vez, lo necesario  es distinto a lo realmente efectivo que sólo a nosotros incumbe y también distinto a lo posible. De esta manera, en modo alguno el ente se agota en lo realmente efectivo; al ente pertenece la riqueza de lo posible y la precisión de lo necesario. La región del ente excede al sector de lo realmente efectivo.

Cuando decimos «el ente» mentamos según la cantidad pero sobre todo según el modo, más que lo «realmente efectivo». Quizá lo realmente efectivo tampoco sea, en modo alguno, el ente que marca la pauta. Y siempre, donde se exige para la vida humana la «proximidad de la realidad efectiva», la «realidad efectiva» propiamente dicha, no es, cuando se piensa claramente, lo simplemente presente, sino lo planeado; no lo amaestrado, sino un fallo inapelable pero no enunciado. Lo realmente efectivo no es lo tantas veces nombrado «realmente efectivo», (57) sino lo «posible». Así, mientras nos limitemos a mentar lo efectivo jamás pensaremos «el ente» en total. Si de aquí en adelante pensamos seriamente al ente en total, si pensamos, pues, de manera completa el ser de éste, entonces radicará en el ser, cabalmente, la efectividad de lo efectivo, pero también la posibilidad de lo posible y la necesidad de lo necesario.

Faltaría preguntar por qué pertenecen al ser precisamente esas tres cosas (posibilidad, realidad efectiva, necesidad) y si ellas solas agotan la esencia del ser. Sin duda, para la metafísica (ontología) está previamente estipulado, sin meditación alguna, que estas tres maneras del ente, las cuales también se llaman sin más ni más «las» «modalidades» (realidad efectiva, posibilidad, necesidad), agotan la esencia del ser. Que un ente sea o realmente efectivo o sólo posible o necesario, es cosa evidente para el entendimiento común; pero quizás esta evidencia es una opinión errónea respecto a la otra evidencia de que el ente sea lo realmente efectivo y de que lo realmente efectivo sea, a su vez, lo eficaz y lo vigente.

To what “is” belongs Not only the currently actual, which affects us and which we stumble upon: the happenings, the destinies and doings of Man, nature in its regularity and its catastrophes, the barely fathomable powers that are already present in all motives and aims, in all valuations and attitudes of belief. To what “is” belongs also the possible, which we expect, hope for, and fear, which we only anticipate, before which we recoil and yet do not let go. To be sure, the possible is the not yet actual, but this not-actual is nevertheless no mere nullity. The possible also “is,” its being simply has another character than the actual.

Different yet again from what happens to be actual and the possible is (22) the necessary. Thus beings do not exhaust themselves in the actual. To beings belong the wealth of the possible and the stringency of the necessary. The realm of beings is not identical to the domain of the actual.

In terms of number, but above all in terms of modality, we mean more than the “actual” when we say “beings.” Indeed, the actual is perhaps not at all the standard for beings. And whenever one demands closeness to the actual for human life, the “actuality” that is really meant is not what is simply present, but what is planned, not what is mastered, but an unspoken claim to power. The oft-mentioned “actual” is not the actual, but the possible. Thus we never think “beings” as a whole as long as we only mean the actual. Henceforth, if we earnestly think beings as a whole, if we think their being completely, then the actuality of the actual is contained in being, but also the possibility of the possible and the necessity of the necessary.

It remains to be asked why precisely these three (possibility, actuality, necessity) belong to being, whether they alone exhaust its essence. For metaphysics (ontology) it is clearly decided, beforehand and without any consideration, that these three types of beings, also simply called “the” “modalities” (actuality, possibility, necessity), exhaust the essence of being. That a being is either actual, possible, or necessary strikes ordinary understanding as a truism. However, this is perhaps a misunderstanding of the other truism that beings are actual and the actual is the effective and what counts at any particular time.

zu dem, Was »ist«, gehört uns jedoch Nicht allein das gerade Wirkliche, das uns trifft und darauf Wir stoßen: die Begebenheiten, die Geschicke und Gemächte des Menschen, die Natur in ihrer Regelhaftigkeit und in ihren Katastrophen, die kaum faßbaren Mächte, die in allen Antrieben und Zielen, allen Wertungen und Glaubenshaltungen schon anwesend sind. Zu dem, was »ist«, gehört uns auch das Mögliche, das wir Erwarten, erhoffen und befürchten, was wir nur ahnen, Wovor wir zurückfahren und was wir dennoch nicht loslassen. Das Mögliche ist zwar das noch nicht Wirkliche, allein dieses Nicht-Wirkliche ist uns dennoch kein Nichtiges. Auch das Mögliche »ist«, nur hat dessen Sein einen Anderen Charakter als das Wirkliche.

(24) Wieder anders als das uns nur zugefallene Wirkliche und anders als das Mögliche ist das Notwendige. So erschöpft sich das Seiende keineswegs im Wirklichen; zum Seienden gehört der Reichtum des Möglichen und die Schärfe des Notwendigen. Der Bereich des Seienden deckt sich nicht mit dem Bezirk des Wirklichen.

sagen wir »das Seiende«, dann meinen wir der Anzahl, aber vor Allem der Art nach mehr als das »Wirkliche«. Ja, das Wirkliche ist vielleicht auch gar nicht einmal das maßgebende Seiende. Und wo immer man für das menschliche Leben die »Wirklichkeitsnahe« fordert, ist, klar gedacht, die eigentlich gemeinte »Wirklichkeit« nicht das Vorhandene, sondern das Geplante, nicht das Gemeisterte, sondern der ungesagte Machtanspruch. Nicht das vielgenannte »Wirkliche« ist das Wirkliche, sondern das »Mögliche«. Wir denken somit »das Seiende« niemals schon im Ganzen, solange wir nur das Wirkliche meinen. Denken wir fortan ernstlich das Seiende im Ganzen, denken wir also dessen Sein vollständig, dann liegt im Sein beschlossen die Wirklichkeit des Wirklichen, aber auch die Möglichkeit des Möglichen, aber auch die Notwendigkeit des Notwendigen.

Warum nun gerade diese drei (Möglichkeit, Wirklichkeit, Notwendigkeit) zum Sein gehören, ob sie allein das Wesen des Seins erschöpfen, bleibt zu fragen. Für die Metaphysik (Ontologie) ist dies freilich zuvor schon ohne jede Besinnung ausgemacht, daß diese drei Weisen des Seienden, die auch schlechthin »die« »Modalitäten« heißen (Wirklichkeit, Möglichkeit, Notwendigkeit), das Wesen des Seins erschöpfen. Daß ein Seiendes entweder wirklich oder nur möglich oder notwendig ist, das kommt auch dem gewöhnlichen Verstand selbstverständlich vor; vielleicht aber ist diese Selbstverständlichkeit eine Irrmeinung gleich der anderen Selbstverständlichkeit, das Seiende sei das Wirkliche und das Wirkliche sei das je gerade Wirksame und in Geltung Stehende.
