Diferenciando-se do percepcionar grego, o representar moderno, cujo significado é expresso aproximadamente pela palavra repraesentatio, quer dizer algo muito diferente. Re-presentar significa aqui trazer para diante de si o que-está-perante enquanto algo contraposto, remetê-lo a si, ao que representa, e, nesta referência, empurrá-lo para si como o âmbito paradigmático. Onde tal acontece, é o homem que, sobre o ente, se põe como imagem. Mas na medida em que o homem, deste modo, se põe como imagem, ele põe-se a si mesmo em cena, isto é, no círculo aberto do que é universal e publicamente representado. Com isso, o homem põe-se a si mesmo como a cena, na qual o ente doravante se tem de re-presentar, presentificar (präsentieren), isto é, ser imagem. O homem torna-se no que representifica (Repräsentant) o ente, no sentido do que é objectivo.

Mas o que é novo neste processo não está de modo nenhum em que agora a posição (Stellung) do homem no meio do ente seja apenas diferente da do homem medieval e antigo. O decisivo é que o homem ocupa esta posição expressamente como a posição constituída por ele mesmo, mantém-na voluntariamente como a posição ocupada por ele e assegura-a como o solo de um possível desenrolar-se da humanidade. Só agora pode haver algo como uma posição do homem. O homem põe, com base em si mesmo, o modo como ele se tem de pôr em relação ao ente, enquanto algo objectivo. Começa aquele modo de ser homem que ocupa o âmbito das faculdades humanas corno espaço de medida e de consumação da dominação do ente na totalidade. A era, que se determina a partir deste acontecimento, não é nova apenas numa consideração retrospectiva relativamente ao já passado, mas é ela que se coloca a si mesma propriamente como nova. Ser novo faz parte do mundo que se tornou imagem.

Se, deste modo, o carácter de imagem do mundo é esclarecido como o estar-representado do ente, então, para captar completamente a essência moderna do estar-representado, temos de extrair, a partir da palavra e do conceito deteriorados “representar”, a força da denominação originária: o pôr diante de si e para si. E através disto que o ente vem parar em objecto, e só assim recebe o selo do ser.

Que o mundo se torne imagem e que o homem, dentro do ente, se torne subjectum, é um e o mesmo processo. (GA5BD:114-115)

In distinction from the Greek apprehension, modern representing, whose signification is first expressed by the word repraesentatio, means something quite different. Representation ( vor-stellen) here means: to bring the present-at-Hand before one as something standing over-and-against, to relate it to oneself, the representer, and, in this relation, to force it back to oneself as the norm-giving domain. Where this happens Man “puts himself in the picture” concerning beings. When, however, in this way, he docs this, he places himself in the scene; in, that is, the sphere of what is generally and publicly represented. And what goes along with this is that man sets himself forth as the scene in which, henceforth, beings must set-themselves-before, present themselves – be, that is to say, in the picture. Man becomes the representative (Repräsentant) of beings in the sense of the objective.

What is new, however, in this occurrence does Not at all consist in the fact, merely, that the position of man in the midst of beings is other than it Was for ancient of medieval man. What is decisive is that man specifically takes up this position as one constituted by himself, intentionally maintains it as that taken up by himself, and secures it in place as the basis for a possible development of humanity. Now for the first time there exists such a thing as the “position” of man. Man makes depend on himself the way he is to Stand to beings as the objective. What begins is that mode of human being which occupies the realm of human capacity as the domain of measuring and execution for the purpose of the mastery of beings as a whole. The age that is determined by this event is not only new in retrospective comparison with what had preceded it. It is new, rather, in that it explicitly sets itself up as the new. lo be “new” belongs to a world that has become picture.

If, then, we wish to clarify the pictorial character of the world as the representedness of beings, then in order fully to grasp the modern essence of representedness we must scent out the original naming power of that worn-out word and concept “to represent”: to put forth and relate to oneself. It is through this that the being comes to stand as an object and so first receives the seal of being. That the world becomes picture is one and the same process whereby, in the midst of beings, man becomes subject. (GA5YH:68)

Ganz anderes meint im Unterschied zum griechischen Vernehmen das neuzeitliche vorstellen, dessen Bedeutung das Wort repraesentatio am ehesten zum Ausdruck bringt. vor-stellen bedeutet Hier: das Vorhandene als ein Entgegenstehendes vor sich bringen, auf sich, den Vorstellenden zu, beziehen und in diesen Bezug zu sich als den maßgebenden Bereich zurückzwingen. Wo solches geschieht, setzt der Mensch über das Seiende sich ins Bild. Indem aber der Mensch dergestalt sich ins Bild setzt, setzt er sich Selbst in die Szene, d. h. in den offenen Umkreis des allgemein und öffentlich Vorgestellten. Damit setzt sich der Mensch selbst als die Szene, in der das Seiende fortan sich vor-stellen, präsentieren, d. h. Bild Sein muß.

Der Mensch wird der Repräsentant des Seienden im Sinne des Gegenständigen.

Aber das Neue dieses Vorgangs liegt keinesfalls darin, daß Jetzt die Stellung des Menschen inmitten des Seienden lediglich eine Andere ist gegenüber dem mittelalterlichen und antiken Menschen. Entscheidend ist, daß der Mensch diese Stellung eigens als die von ihm ausgemachte selbst bezieht, sie willentlich als die von ihm bezogene innehält und als den Boden einer möglichen Entfaltung der Menschheit sichert. Jetzt erst gibt es überhaupt so etwas Wie eine Stellung des Menschen. Der Mensch stellt die Weise, wie er sich zum Seienden als dem Gegenständlichen zu stellen hat, auf sich selbst. Jene Art des Menschseins beginnt, die den Bereich der menschlichen Vermögen als den Maß- und Vollzugsraum für die Bewältigung des Seienden im Ganzen besetzt. Das Zeitalter, das sich aus diesem Geschehnis bestimmt, ist Nicht nur für die rückschauende Betrachtung ein neues gegenüber den voraufgegangenen, sondern es setzt sich selbst und eigens als das neue. Neu zu sein gehört zur Welt, die zum Bild geworden.

Wenn somit der Bildcharakter der Welt als die vorgestellt-heit des Seienden verdeutlicht wird, dann müssen Wir, um das neuzeitliche Wesen der Vorgestelltheit voll zu fassen, aus dem abgenutzten Wort und Begriff »vorstellen« die ursprüngliche Nennkraft herausspüren: das vor sich hin und zu sich her Stellen. Dadurch kommt das Seiende als Gegenstand zum stehen und empfängt so erst das Siegel des Seins. Daß die Welt zum Bild wird, ist ein und derselbe Vorgang mit dem, daß der Mensch innerhalb des Seienden zum Subjectum wird. (GA5:91-92)
