Mas logo que nos pomos a caminho, tendo em vista determinar estas coisas, encontramo-nos em apuros. Pois todas estas coisas estão, desde há muito tempo, determinadas e, quando o não estão, há modos seguros de proceder (as ciências) e de produzir, nos quais isso pode acontecer. O que é uma pedra dizem-nos mais rapidamente a mineralogia e a química, o que é uma rosa e um arbusto ensina-nos com segurança a botânica; do que é uma rã e um falcão fala-nos a zoologia; do que é um sapato, uma ferradura ou um relógio, dão-nos uma informação mais exacta o sapateiro, o ferreiro, ou o relojoeiro.

Torna-se evidente que, com a nossa questão, chegamos sempre demasiado tarde e, ao mesmo tempo, somos remetidos para quem tem disponível uma resposta muito melhor ou para quem, pelo menos, dispõe de experiências e modos de proceder que permitem que ela seja dada rapidamente. Isto é apenas uma confirmação do que já tínhamos admitido, ou seja, que com a questão «que é uma coisa?» nada se pode começar. Mas, na medida em que temos o projecto de discutir esta questão e de o fazer a propósito das coisas que estão mais próximas, torna-se necessário tornar compreensível o que ainda queremos saber, em contraste com o que nos dizem as ciências.

Com a nossa questão «que é uma coisa?» não queremos saber, evidentemente, o que é um granito, um sílex, um calcário ou um grão de areia, mas o que é uma pedra enquanto coisa. Não queremos saber como se diferenciam e como são os musgos, os fetos, as ervas, os arbustos e as árvores, mas o que é a planta enquanto coisa – e o mesmo acontece com os animais. Também não queremos saber o que é um alicate, na sua diferença em relação ao martelo, nem o que é um relógio, na sua diferença em relação à chave, mas o que são estes instrumentos de uso e de trabalho, enquanto coisas. Sem dúvida, não é imediatamente claro o que isto quer dizer. Mas admitamos, por uma vez, que se pode perguntar deste modo; então exige-se, claramente, que nos detenhamos diante dos factos e da sua exacta observação, para podermos conceber o que são as coisas. Não se pode imaginar o que é uma coisa permanecendo sentado à secretária, ou prescrevendo discursos de carácter geral. Isso só pode ser decidido nos locais de trabalho das ciências de investigação e nas oficinas. Quando não nos encontramos nestes sítios estamos expostos ao riso da criada. Questionamos acerca das coisas e, ao fazer isso, passamos por cima do que nos é dado e das ocasiões que, de acordo com a opinião geral, nos proporcionam informações adequadas acerca de todas estas coisas.

Assim parece, de facto. Com a nossa questão «que é uma coisa?», ultrapassamos não apenas as pedras isoladas e os tipos de pedra, as plantas isoladas e as espécies de plantas, os animais isolados e as espécies animais, os instrumentos de uso e de trabalho isolados. Ultrapassamos mesmo estes domínios do inanimado, do animado e do utilitário e queremos apenas saber: «que é uma coisa?» Na medida em que questionamos deste modo procuramos aquilo que faz a coisa ser coisa, enquanto tal, não enquanto pedra ou madeira, aquilo que torna-coisa (be-dingt) a coisa. Não questionamos acerca de uma coisa de uma determinada espécie, mas acerca da coisalidade da coisa. Essa coisalidade, que torna-coisa uma coisa já não pode ser coisa, quer dizer, um condicionado (Bedingtes). A coisalidade deve ser qualquer coisa de incondicionado. Com a questão «que é uma coisa?», perguntamos pelo incondicionado (Unbedingten). Questionamos acerca do palpável que nos rodeia e, com isto, afastamo-nos ainda e cada vez mais das coisas que nos estão próximas, como Tales, que via até às estrelas. Devemos ultrapassar as estrelas, ir além de todas as coisas, em direcção ao que já-não-é-coisa, aí onde já não há mais coisas que dêem um fundamento e um solo.

E, no entanto, levantamos esta questão apenas para saber o que é uma pedra, um lagarto que se expôs ao Sol em cima dela, o que é uma vergôntea que cresce ali perto, o que é um canivete que nós, deitados no prado, temos talvez na mão. Devemos saber precisamente o que o mineralogista, o botânico, o zoólogo e o amolador não querem saber, aquilo que eles julgam apenas querer saber quando, no fundo, querem uma coisa completamente diferente: promover o progresso da ciência, ou satisfazer o prazer da descoberta, ou indicar o carácter utilitário da coisa, ou ganhar a vida. Devemos saber aquilo que nenhum deles não só não sabe, como talvez nem sequer possa saber, apesar de toda a ciência e habilidade manual. Isto soa a arrogância. Não se limita a soar, é-o. Certamente não se exprime aqui a presunção de uma pessoa isolada, tanto quanto a nossa dúvida quanto ao poder-saber, ou querer-saber, das ciências não se dirige contra a atitude e o modo de pensar de pessoas isoladas, nem mesmo contra a utilidade e a necessidade das ciências.

A pretensão de saber, que caracteriza a nossa questão, é uma arrogância do mesmo tipo das que se encontram sempre em cada decisão essencial. Conhecemos já esta decisão, o que não significa que nos tenhamos já embrenhado também nela. É a decisão sobre se queremos saber aquilo com que – segundo esta maneira de falar – nada se pode começar. Quando renunciamos a este saber e não colocamos esta questão, tudo permanece tal como estava. Podemos também, sem esta questão, ter êxito no nosso exame, talvez até mais êxito. Quando, por outro lado, colocamos a questão, não ficamos, de um dia para o outro, melhores botânicos, zoólogos e historiadores, juristas e médicos. Mas talvez nos tomemos melhores professores, médicos e juízes, ou – dito com mais prudência – em todo o caso, diferentes, mesmo que também, então, – a saber, na profissão – nada possa começar com a questão.

Com a nossa questão não podemos nem substituir, nem melhorar as ciências. No entanto, quereríamos colaborar na preparação de uma decisão. Esta decisão é a seguinte: é a ciência o padrão de medida para o saber, ou há um saber no qual, em primeiro lugar, se determinam os fundamentos e os limites da ciência e, com isso, a sua eficácia própria? É este saber autêntico necessário a um povo histórico, ou pode passar-se sem ele e substituí-lo por outra coisa?

Mas as decisões não se conseguem tomar só porque se fala delas, mas porque se criam disposições e se manifestam atitudes nas quais a decisão é inevitável e em que, se ela não acontece, isso toma-se a decisão mais essencial.

O que é mais próprio de tais decisões consiste em que elas só podem ser preparadas por uma única questão, com a qual, de acordo com a opinião usual e na perspectiva da criada, nada se pode começar. Com isto, esta questão desperta sempre aparência de ser um querer-saber-mais (Besserwillenwollen) do que as ciências. «Mais», significa sempre uma diferença de grau no interior de um mesmo domínio. Mas, com a nossa questão, colocamo-nos fora das ciências e o saber a que a nossa questão aspira não é nem melhor, nem pior – mas completamente diferente. Diferente das ciências, mas também diferente daquilo a que se chama uma «concepção-do-mundo». (p. 18-21)

But as soon as we make our way toward a Definition of these things, we grow embarrassed. For all these things were properly defined long ago, or if Not, there are secure procedures (sciences) and modes of production by way of which this can be done. Mineralogy and chemistry can say best and most quickly what a stone is; botany teaches us reliably what a rose or a bush is; what a frog or a falcon is, is for zoology to tell; about what a shoe or a horseshoe or a clock is, the shoemaker and the blacksmith and the clockmaker give the best expert information.

As it turns out, we arrive too late with our question and are immediately referred to circles that have a far better answer handy or at the very least possess the experiences and methods to offer such answers readily. But this only confirms what we have already granted that one can initiate nothing with the question “What is a thing?” But since we intend to clarify this question, and in relation to those things that lie closest to us, it is necessary to clarify what we still wish to know, in contradistinction to the sciences.

In raising the question “What is a thing”? we apparently do not want to know what granite, a pebble, limestone, or sandstone is but rather what a stone is as a thing. We do not want to know how to distinguish in each case between mosses, ferns, grasses, shrubs, and trees but to know what a plant is as a thing, and similarly with animals. We (8) also do not want to know how pliers and hammers, clocks and keys are different, and how they are in each case, or in particular, but what these implements and tools are as things. What this is supposed to mean is of course not immediately clear. But if we allow the question to be asked in this way, then surely the following demand remains: namely that we hold ourselves to the facts and exact observation of them in order to make out what things are. What things are cannot be thought up at the desk and prescribed by general discourse. It can only be decided in the workshop and laboratory of investigative science. If we do not limit ourselves in this way, we expose ourselves to the laughter of housemaids. We are questioning things and yet we leap over all the data and occasions that, according to general judgment, provide adequate information about all these things.

In fact, that is how it looks. Our question “What is a thing?” leaps over not only particular stones and kinds of stone, particular plants and kinds of plant, particular animals and kinds of animal, implements and tools, but also the very domains of the lifeless, the living, and the instrumental in order only to know what a thing is. When we ask this sort of question we are seeking what in each case makes the thing a thing and not what makes something stone or wood, what conditions the thing (was das Ding be-dingt). We are not asking about a thing of a certain kind but about the very thingness of the thing. That which conditions the thing as thing cannot itself be a thing, i.e., something conditioned (ein Bedingtes). Thingness must be something unconditioned (etwas Un-bedingtes).1 The question “What is a thing?” asks about the unconditioned. We ask about what surrounds us and can be grasped by the Hand, and yet we alienate ourselves from those things that lie closest to us even further than did Thales, who only looked toward the stars. We want to leap beyond these and over every thing toward the unconditioned, where there are no more things to provide a basis and ground. (9)

And yet we pose this question only in order to know what a stone is, and a lizard sunning himself upon it, what a blade of grass growing beside it is, and a knife, which we hold, perhaps, in our hand as we lie in the meadow. We want to know precisely this, something which the mineralogist, perhaps, and the botanist and zoologist and metallurgist do not at all want to know, something they only think they want to know, while they want, at bottom, something else: to further the progress of science or to take pleasure in discovery or to display the technical utility of things or to make a living. We would like to know not only what these individuals do not want to know but also what they perhaps can never know, despite all their scientific acumen and technical skills. This sounds presumptuous. It not only sounds presumptuous; it is presumptuous. Of course, this is not the presumptuousness of a particular individual, any more than our doubt about whether the desire and ability to know embedded in the sciences is directed against the attitude and disposition of particular individuals or even against the utility and necessity of science itself.

The knowledge claim of our question is a presumption of the sort that lies in every essential decision. Although we are already familiar with this decision, this does not mean that we have already gone through with it. It is the decision whether we want to know something with which one can initiate nothing. If we dispense with this knowledge and do not ask this question, everything remains just as it is. We will pass our exams without this question, too, perhaps even more easily. On the other hand, if we do ask this question, we will not become better botanists or zoologists or historians or jurists or physicians overnight. But, perhaps better or to speak more cautiously, in any event different teachers, doctors, and judges, although even then—in our professions—we can initiate nothing with the question. (10)

With our question, we would like neither to replace nor to improve the sciences. Instead, we would like to collaborate in the preparation of a decision, which runs: is science the measure for (all) knowing, or is there a (kind of) knowing in which the ground and the limits of science, and thereby its proper effectiveness, are determined? Is this authentic knowing necessary for a historical people, or can it be dispensed with or replaced by something else?

But decisions will not be worked out and made by talking about them, but by creating situations and taking positions in which the decision is unavoidable, in which the most essential decision becomes whether or not the decision is reached or instead circumvented.

The distinctiveness of such decisions remains that they are prepared for only by questions with which one can initiate nothing, according to the widely held opinions of housemaids. This question always invites the charge that it wishes to know better than the sciences. “Better”: that always means a difference in degree in one and the same domain. But we Stand with our question outside the sciences, and the knowing to which our question aspires is neither better nor worse but wholly distinct: distinct not only from science but also from what one calls “worldview.”

Aber sobald Wir uns auf den Weg machen, diese Dinge zu bestimmen, kommen wir in eine Verlegenheit. Denn all diese Dinge sind eigentlich längst bestimmt, und wenn sie es Nicht sind, so gibt es gesicherte Verfahrensweisen (Wissenschaften) und Herstellungsweisen, in denen das Geschehen kann. Was ein Stein sei, sagen uns am besten und schnellsten die Mineralogie und die Chemie, und was eine Rose und ein Strauch, darüber unterrichtet zuverlässig die Botanik, was ein Frosch und ein Falke, davon erzählt die Zoologie; was ein Schuh sei oder ein Hufeisen oder eine Uhr, darüber geben der Schuster und der Schmied und der Uhrmacher die beste sachkennerische Auskunft.

Es stellt sich heraus, daß wir mit unserer Frage immer zu spät kommen und sogleich an stellen verwiesen Werden, die eine weit bessere Antwort bereithaben oder wenigstens Erfahrungen und Verfahrensweisen, solche antworten alsbald zu geben. Das ist nur eine Bestätigung dessen, was wir schon zugestanden Haben, daß Man mit der Frage »Was ist ein Ding?« Nichts anfangen könne. Da wir aber Vorhaben, diese Frage zu erörtern, und zwar mit Bezug auf die nächstliegenden Dinge, wird es notwendig, deutlich zu machen, was wir denn noch Wissen Wollen im Unterschied zu den Wissenschaften.

Mit unserer Frage »Was ist ein Ding?« wollen wir anscheinend nicht wissen, was ein Granit, was ein Kieselstein, was ein Kalk- oder Sandstein sei, sondern was der Stein sei als Ding. Wir wollen nicht wissen, Wie die Moose, Farne, Gräser, Sträu-cher und Bäume sich unterscheiden und jeweils sind, sondern was die Pflanze ist als Ding, und ebenso bei den Tieren. Wir (8) wollen auch nicht wissen, was eine Zange ist im Unterschied zum Hammer, was eine Uhr im Unterschied zum Schlüssel, sondern was dieses Gebrauchszeug und diese Werkzeuge sind als Dinge. Was dies besagen soll, ist freilich nicht ohne weiteres klar. Aber geben wir einmal zu, es könne so gefragt werden, dann bleibt Offenbar eine Forderung bestehen: daß wir nämlich, um auszumachen, was die Dinge sind, uns an die Tatsachen und deren exakte Beobachtung halten. Was die Dinge sind, läßt sich nicht am Schreibtisch ausdenken und durch allgemeines Reden vorschreiben. Es wird nur in den Arbeitsräumen der forschenden Wissenschaft und in den Werkstätten entschieden. Wenn wir uns nicht daran halten, dann bleiben wir dem Gelächter der Dienstmägde ausgesetzl. Wir fragen nach den Dingen und überspringen dabei die Gegebenheiten und Gelegenheiten, die uns nach allgemeinem Urteil über all diese Dinge die angemessene Auskunft verschaffen.

So sieht es in der Tat aus. Wir überspringen mit unserer Frage »Was ist ein Ding?« nicht nur die einzelnen Steine und Gesteinsarten, die einzelnen Pflanzen und Pflanzenarten, die einzelnen Tiere und Tierarten, die einzelnen Gebrauchs- und Werkzeuge. Wir überspringen sogar noch diese Bereiche des Leblosen, Lebendigen, Zeugartigen und wollen nur wissen: »Was ist ein Ding?« Indem wir so fragen, Suchen wir jenes, was das Ding als Ding, nicht als Stein und als Holz, zu einem solchen Macht, was das Ding be-dingt. Wir fragen nicht nach einem Ding irgendwelcher Art, sondern nach der Dingheit des Dinges. Sie, die das Ding zum Ding be-dingt, kann Selbst nicht wieder ein Ding Sein, d. h. ein Bedingtes. Die Dingheit muß etwas Un-bedingtes sein. Mit der Frage »Was ist ein Ding?« fragen wir nach dem Unbedingten. Wir fragen nach dem Handgreiflichen um uns herum und entfernen uns dabei noch um vieles weiter von den nächstliegenden Dingen weg als jener Thaies, der nur bis zu den Sternen sah. Wir möchten sogar über diese, über jegliches Ding hinaus zum Un-bedingten, dorthin, wo keine Dinge mehr sind, die einen Grund und Boden geben.

(9) Und dennoch: Wir stellen diese Frage nur, um zu wissen, was ein Stein sei, was eine Eidechse sei, die sich auf ihm sonnt, was ein Grashalm sei, der daneben aufwächst, was ein Messer sei, das wir, auf der Wiese liegend, vielleicht in der Hand halten. Gerade dieses möchten wir wissen, solches, was vielleicht die Mineralogen und Botaniker und Zoologen und die Messerschmiede gar nicht wissen wollen, wovon sie nur meinen, sie wollten dieses wissen, während sie im Grunde etwas anderes wollen: den Fortschritt der Wissenschaft fördern oder die Lust des Entdeckens befriedigen oder die technische Nutzbarkeit der Dinge zeigen oder ihren Unterhalt verdienen. Solches möchten wir wissen, was jene nicht nur nicht wissen wollen, sondern vielleicht gar nie wissen können trotz aller Wissenschaft und handwerklichen Geschicklichkeit. Das klingt anmaßend. Es klingt nicht nur so, es ist so. Freilich spricht Hier nicht die Anmaßung einer einzelnen Person, so wenig wie unser Zweifel am Wissen wollen und Wissenkönnen der Wissenschaften sich gegen Haltung und Gesinnung einzelner Personen richtet oder gar gegen den Nutzen und die Notwendigkeit der Wissenschaft.

Der Wissensanspruch unserer Frage ist eine Anmaßung von der Art, wie sie jedesmal in jeder wesentlichen Entscheidung hegt. Wir kennen diese Entscheidung bereits, was nicht heißt, daß wir auch schon durch sie hindurchgegangen seien. Es ist die Entscheidung darüber, ob wir solches wissen wollen, Womit man - im Sinne jener Redensart - nichts anfangen kann. Wenn wir auf dieses Wissen verzichten und die Frage nicht fragen, bleibt alles so, wie es ist. Wir werden unser Examen auch ohne diese Frage bestehen, vielleicht sogar besser. Wenn wir andererseits diese Frage fragen, werden wir nicht über Nacht bessere Botaniker und Zoologen und Historiker, Juristen und Mediziner. Aber vielleicht bessere oder - vorsichtiger gesprochen - jedenfalls Andere Lehrer, andere Ärzte und Richter, wenngleich wir auch dann - nämlich im Beruf - nichts mit der Frage anfangen können.

(10) Mit unserer Frage möchten wir die Wissenschaften weder ersetzen noch verbessern. Indes möchten wir an der Vorbereitung einer Entscheidung mitwirken. Diese Entscheidung lautet: Ist die Wissenschaft der Maßstab für das Wissen, oder gibt es ein Wissen, in dem erst der Grund und die Grenze der Wissenschaft und damit ihre echte Wirksamkeit sich bestimmen? Ist dieses eigentliche Wissen für ein geschichtliches Volk notwendig, oder läßt es sich entbehren und anderwei tig ersetzen?

Aber Entscheidungen werden nicht dadurch erarbeitet, daß man darüber redet, sondern daß Lagen geschaffen und Stellungen bezogen werden, in denen die Entscheidung unausweichlich ist, in denen es zur wesentlichsten Entscheidung wird, wenn die Ent scheidung nicht fällt, sondern umgangen wird.

Das Eigentümliche solcher Entscheidungen bleibt, daß sie nur durch ein Fragen vorbereitet werden, mit dem man nach dem landläufigen Urteil und im Gesichtskreis der Dienstmägde nichts anfangen kann. Dieses Fragen erweckt dabei immer den Anschein, als sei es ein Besserwissenwollen gegenüber den Wissenschaften. »Besser« - das meint immer einen Gradunterschied in ein und demselben Bereich. Wir stehen aber mit unserer Frage außerhalb der Wissenschaften, und das Wissen, das unsere Frage anstrebt, ist nicht besser und nicht schlechter -sondern ganz anders. Anders als die Wissenschaft, aber auch anders als das, was man »Weltanschauung« nennt. (p. 7-10)
