(160) En cambio, Ser en el sentido de destino no confiere inmediatamente una correspondencia al ser de una roca, o de una rosa, o de un águila. Ciertamente experimentamos directamente una piedra, una planta o un animal, como siendo; pero ¿quién se atrevería a preguntar sucede con el Ser de esos entes? ¿“Tiene” la roca su Ser así como “tiene” extensión, peso, dureza y color, y dónde, entonces, se “asienta” este Ser? Lo mismo corresponde para la rosa y el águila. Podemos decir solamente, sobre la base de una muy difícil fundamentación: piedra, planta, animal, son; pero su Ser “propio” como tal, nos queda cerrado, y ciertamente en cada caso de un modo diferente según cada ente. Es ya una distorsión decir que ellos tienen un Ser “propio”.

Para nosotros, hombres, en cambio, nuestro Ser, el hecho de qué y cómo somos, nos es manifiesto de un modo seguro, y en verdad no sólo en primer lugar, en tanto tenemos conocimiento de este Ser como algo constatable y comprobable, así como tenemos un conocimiento, por ejemplo, de que sobre el Feldberg hay una torre. Semejante cosa no nos involucra. Pero nuestro Ser sí nos involucra: no podemos en absoluto, ser, sin que este ser nos involucre. Pero este, nuestro ser, no es el de un sujeto aislado, sino, según lo antes dicho (§ 11b): un histórico ser-uno-con-otros (Miteinandersein) en cuanto ser en un mundo. Que tal ser del hombre sea cada vez el mío no significa que este ser se vuelva “subjetivo”, que se restrinja al individuo desligado y determinado desde él, sino que significa solamente que, en primer y último lugar, este histórico ser-con-otros del hombre debe atravesar por decisiones que nadie puede tomar por él.

Nosotros creemos que, siendo, dirigimos nuestro ser y disponemos (verfügen) de él. En cierto sentido, eso es verdadero, en cierto sentido empero, asimismo, falso; pues ni se nos ha prestado este Ser, ni podemos tomárnoslo en un suicidio libre, suponiendo que sabemos lo que ha de significar aquí libre, nos tomamos el Ser, pero nunca podemos tomárnoslo, y el Ser, en cierto modo, se desembaraza de nosotros, porque nosotros mismos nos devastamos con la devastación del Ser, así que, precisamente, falta quien pueda “ser” (!) vaciado de su Ser. Precisamente aquí se muestra la singular relación del hombre en cuanto ente, con el ser de este ente.

Nuestro ser es tal que, en él, como decimos, estamos arrojados sin conocer la trayectoria (Wurfbahn), y sin que -las más de las veces y ante todo- asumamos propiamente este carácter de arrojado (Geworfenheit) en nuestro Dasein, al que eludimos siempre ya inconscientemente, con diversos medios. Pero, de una u otra manera, debemos responder al ser, al cual estamos entregados. Esto dice: nuestro ser no es sólo carácter de arrojado, es simultáneamente proyecto (Entwurf), en el que, de una u otra manera, se inaugura, como envío y misión, la trayectoria del (161) ser-arrojado, o se clausura y desfigura. El Ser ultrahumano, según el cual un hombre no es sólo simplemente y nada más que hombre, será por ello de una especie conforme a la cual él asume el ser de un modo supremo, como algo sobrevenido, es decir, verdaderamemte padece (leidet) en un padecer (Leiden) que, lejos de una quejumbrosa y afligida dolencia, es el origen de lo que verdaderamente tenemos que entender como pasión (Leidenschaft). Tal ser, que según su esencia es un padecer por sí mismo (Leiden seiner seihst), sólo puede ser pertinentemente experimentado desde la capacidad que se tenga para tal padecer, es decir, la capacidad para estar a la altura de la grandeza de una penuria (Not). Este padecer, en el que el Ser se manifiesta como destino, no es empero, una mera capacidad, un destino a la mano que solamente se acepta, sino que este padecer es fecundo. Él abre y desarrolla la penuria.

Sólo en tal padecer nos atrapa un destino, que nunca es sólo presente (vorhandene), sino destinación (Schickung), es decir, nos es enviado (geschickt), de modo que el padecer nos envía al encuentro de nuestra determinación, supuesto que nosotros mismos nos enviamos verdaderamente en ello, y sabemos de lo destinal (das Schickliche) y, lúcidamente, lo queremos. By contrast, beyng in the sense of destiny does not directly impart any correspondence to, for instance, the being of a boulder, of a rose, or of an eagle. We do indeed directly experience stone, plant, and animal as being. Yet who, when asked, would presume to say how things stand concerning the beyng of such beings? Does the boulder ‘have’ its beyng, just as it ‘has’ its extension, heaviness, hardness, and color? And where, then, does such beyng ‘reside’? And correspondingly in the case of the rose and the eagle: We can say one thing only, and that only on the basis of a very difficult argument: stone, plant, and animal are—but their ‘own’ beyng remains closed off to them as such beyng, and indeed in a different way each time for each of these beings. It is even precipitous to say that they have their ‘own’ beyng.

For us humans, by contrast, our beyng—that we are and how we are—is manifest to us in a certain way, yet not only, and not primarily, by our having knowledge of such beyng as something already established that we can ascertain, in the way that, for instance, we can take note of the fact that a tower stands on the Feldberg. Something like that does not affect us. But our beyng does affect us: we cannot be at all without our being affected by such being. Our being, however, is not that of an individuated subject, but rather, in accordance with what was said earlier (p. 126), it is historical being with one another as being in a world. That such being of the human being is in each case mine does not mean that such being is ‘subjectivized’—confined to the isolated individual and determined starting from him—but means only that in the first and last instance, and always, this historical being with one another of the human being must pass through decisions that no one can ever take from another.

We are indeed of the opinion that we are the ones who entirely direct our being and dispose over it. In a certain sense this is true, yet in a certain sense it is equally untrue, for we have neither bestowed such beyng upon ourselves, nor can we take away such beyng from ourselves. Even in the freest act of suicide—assuming we are able to know what ‘free’ is supposed to mean here—we can indeed take away such beyng from ourselves, yet we can never take it from ourselves and thereby, as it were, rid ourselves of beyng, because with this annihilation of beyng we annihilate ourselves, so that precisely he is lacking who could now ‘be’ (!) rid of his beyng. Precisely here the unique relationship of the human being, as a being, shows itself as a relationship to the being of this being.

Our being is one into which, as we say, we are thrown, without knowing the trajectory of this throw, and without, proximally and for the most part, our explicitly taking up this thrownness into our Dasein, because we have unknowingly always already avoided it for all sorts of reasons. Yet in one way or another, we must take responsibility for the being (Sein) to which we are delivered over. That is to say: Our being is not only thrownness, it is at the same time projection: a projection in which, in one way or another, the trajectory of the throw of our thrownness opens itself up or closes itself off and becomes contorted, and does so as a mission or mandate. That beyng that exceeds the human—in accordance with which a human being is not just simply a human being—will therefore be such as to take up, in a supreme way, being as something that has come over it: to truly suffer it—in a suffering that is quite remote from all wretchedness and from every mere dejected putting up with. In that suffering (Leiden) is the origin of what we must truly comprehend as passion (Leiden-schaft). Such being, which by its essence is a suffering of itself, can therefore also only appropriately be experienced by someone who is capable of such suffering—that is, is capable of being equal to the magnitude of a need. This suffering, in which beyng becomes manifest as destiny, is not, however, a mere capability to simply receive, as it were, a destiny that lies before it. Rather, this suffering is creative. It discloses and unfolds the need.

Only in such suffering can a destiny take hold of us, a destiny that never simply lies present before us, but that is a sending—that is, is sent to us—and in such a way that it sends us toward our vocation, granted that we ourselves truly send ourselves into it, and know of what is fittingly sent, and, in knowing it, will it.

Dagegen verleiht Seyn im Sinne von Schicksal nicht unmittelbar eine Entsprechung etwa zum Sein eines Felsblocks, einer Rose, eines Adlers. Zwar erfahren wir Stein, Pflanze, Tier unmittelbar als seiend. Aber wer möchte sich vermessen, auf Anfrage zu sagen, wie es mit dem Seyn dieser Seienden steht? >Hathatsitzteigeneseigenessubjektiviertsein< (!) könnte. Gerade Hier zeigt sich das einzigartige Verhältnis des Menschen als eines Seienden zum Sein dieses Seienden.

Unser Sein ist solches, darein Wir, Wie wir sagen, Geworfen sind, ohne die Wurfbahn zu kennen und ohne daß wir zumeist und Zunächst diese Geworfenheit eigens in unser Dasein übernehmen, da wir mit vielerlei Auskünften ihr schon immer unbewußt ausgewichen sind. Aber so oder so müssen wir das Sein, dem wir überantwortet sind, verantworten. Das sagt: Unser Sein ist Nicht nur Geworfenheit, es ist zugleich Entwurf, in dem sich so oder so die Wurfbahn der Geworfenheit als Sendung und Auftrag eröffnet oder verschließt und sich verunstaltet. Das übermenschliche Seyn, gemäß dem ein Mensch nicht einfach nur eben so Mensch ist, wird deshalb eine Art Haben, dergemäß es das Sein als ein über es Gekommenes in einer höchsten Weise übernimmt, d. h. wahrhaft leidet — in einem Leiden, das fern ist jeder Wehleidigkeit und jedem nur gedrückten Dulden, in jenem Leiden, das der Ursprung dessen ist, Was wir wahrhaft als Leidenschaft zu begreifen haben. Solches Sein, das seinem Wesen nach Leiden seiner Selbst ist, kann daher auch nur angemessen erfahren Werden von dem, der das Vermögen zu solchem Leiden hat, d. h. das Vermögen, der Größe einer Not gewachsen zu sein. Dieses Leiden, darin das Seyn als Schicksal Offenbar wird, ist jedoch nicht ein bloßes (176) Vermögen, ein gleichsam Vorhandenes Schicksal nur aufzunehmen, sondern dieses Leiden ist schöpferisch. Es erschließt und entwickelt die Not.

Erst in solchem Leiden ergreift uns ein Schicksal, das nie nur vorhandenes ist, sondern Schickung, d. h. uns geschickt, so zwar, daß es uns unserer Bestimmung entgegenschickt, gesetzt, daß wir selbst uns darein wahrhaft schicken und um das Schickliche Wissen und wissend es Wollen. (p. 174-176)
