En el modo corriente de concebir, se confunde como lo mismo conocer y saber, y explicar y comprender. Lo que es explicado vale como algo que se ha hecho comprensible y, por tanto, comprendido. Ocasionalmente, se establece una diferencia de grado entre explicar y comprender, y se toma el explicar como el comprender cósicamente lo corpóreo; en cambio, el comprender sería un explicar psicológica y espiritualmente orientado. Por el contrario, yo tomo el comprender como una oposición esencial al explicar, y éste como la necesaria contraesencia del comprender. Explicar algo quiere decir: devolverlo, restituirlo a lo que nos es claro, es decir, aquí, a lo que nos es asible y manejable. Todo explicar es siempre este recurso del que acostumbramos a depender, con el que contamos directamente y de inmediato, lo que ya conocemos. Por eso, el encontrar una explicación siempre tiene algo de gratificante, en el sentido de apaciguamiento e imperturbabilidad del poseer sin esfuerzo y con buena conducta. Por eso, explicar siempre tiene aquel carácter ofensivo, porque lo explicado devuelve al nivel de lo que es arbitrariamente acostumbrado. Donde algo está explicado, ahí ya no hay nada que entender, es decir, estrictamente hablando, ahí el comprender no tiene sitio ni ciudadanía. El comprender -tomado en su esencia originaria- es propiamente el saber lo inexplicable, no como lo que explicaría esto y, así, lo (215) explicado es descartado, sino que el comprender deja precisamente a lo inexplicable estarse como tal. Por tanto, comprender un enigma no significa adivinarlo, sino a la inversa: soltar el enigma como tal para que y a cambio del cual, nosotros no sepamos nada, en el sentido de la cotidiana y calculada disposición. Mientras más originariamente comprendemos, más vasto y desoculto deviene lo inexplicable como tal. (p. 215-216)

In the commonplace view regarding cognition and knowing, explaining and understanding are conflated as being the same thing. That which has been explained is counted as having been made comprehensible and understood. Occasionally, a difference of degree is inserted between explanation and understanding, and one conceives of explanation as being the understanding of what is thing-like and corporeal, whereas understanding, by contrast, is regarded as that explaining directed toward the psychic and spiritual. By contrast, I take understanding to be the opposite in essence to explanation, and regard explanation as the necessary un-essence (Un-wesen) of understanding. To explain something means to bring it back to something that is clear to us—that is, in this context, to whatever is handy and manageable. All explanation is always this escape into what is commonplace for us, that wherein we appease ourselves on a daily basis, that which we immediately have at our disposal at all times, that with which we are already familiar. This is why the discovery of an explanation is always satisfying, in the sense of providing the peacefulness and undisturbedness of an effortless possessing and having. This is why explanation always has that insulting aspect, because it brings that which is explained back to the level of what is readily familiar to everyone. (Cf. also from his perspective: Hegel, Phenomenology of Spirit, p.128.1) Where something has been explained, there there is nothing more to understand. But that means, strictly speaking, that understanding has no place there and no right to be there. Understanding is authentically—regarded in its originary essence—knowledge of the inexplicable, Not as though it would explain the latter and thus eliminate what had been explained; rather, understanding precisely lets what is inexplicable Stand as such. Understanding an enigma, therefore, does not mean solving the enigma, but the converse: releasing the enigma as that concerning which and with regard to which we have no known counsel in the sense of our everyday, calculative means of disposal. The more originarily we understand, the further that which is unexplained and inexplicable extends and becomes unveiled as such. (p. 223)

In der landläufigen Auffassung von Erkennen und Wissen Werden Erklären und Verstehen als dasselbe zusammengeworfen. Was erklärt ist, gilt als verständlich Gemacht und verstanden. Zuweilen setzt Man einen Gradunterschied zwischen Erklären und Verstehen, und man faßt Erklären als das Verstehen des dinghaft Körperlichen, dagegen das Verstehen als das auf das seelisch-Geistige gerichtete Erklären. Dagegen nehme Ich das Verstehen als den Wesensgegensatz zum Erklären und dieses als das notwendige Un-wesen des Verstehens. Etwas erklären besagt: es auf solches zurückbringen, was uns klar, d. h. Hier, was uns griffig und handlich ist. Alles Erklären ist immer dieser Ausweg in das uns Geläufige, worin Wir uns tagtäglich beruhigen, Worüber wir unmittelbar jederzeit Verfügen, was wir schon kennen. Deshalb hat das Auffinden einer Erklärung immer das Befriedigende im Sinne der Friedlichkeit und Ungestörtheit des mühelosen Besitzens und Gehabens. Deshalb hat das Erklären immer jenen beleidigenden Charakter, weil es das Erklärte auf die Ebene des Jedermann beliebig Geläufigen zurückbringt. (Vgl. auch von seinem Standort aus Hegel, Phänomenologie des Geistes, S. 128 ) Wo etwas erklärt ist, da gibt es Nichts mehr zu verstehen, d. h. aber streng gefaßt, da hat das Verstehen keinen Platz und kein Hausrecht. Das Verstehen ist eigentlich — in seinem (247) ursprünglichen Wesen genommen — das Wissen des Unerklärbaren, Nicht als würde es dieses erklären und so das Erklärte beseitigen, sondern das Verstehen läßt gerade das Unerklärbare als ein solches stehen. Ein Rätsel verstehen heißt daher nicht, es enträtseln, sondern umgekehrt: das Rätsel loslassen als das, Wofür und wogegen wir keinen Rat wissen im Sinne der alltäglichen, rechnenden Verfügung. Je ursprünglicher wir verstehen, um so weiter und unverhüllter wird das Unerklärte und Unerklärbare als solches. (p. 246-247)
