Como costumamos dizer, uma pessoa com bom humor anima uma reunião social. Neste caso, esta pessoa produz em si uma vivência anímica, para então transportar até os outros, como germes infecciosos que migram de um organismo para outro? Dizemos mesmo: o ânimo é contagiante. Ou uma outra pessoa está em uma reunião social, uma pessoa que a tudo abate e deprime com seu modo de ser. Ninguém consegue escapar desta tonalidade afetiva. O que podemos deduzir daqui? As tonalidades afetivas não são manifestações paralelas, mas justamente o que determina desde o princípio a convivência. Tudo se dá como se uma tonalidade afetiva sempre estivesse aí, como uma atmosfera, na qual sempre e a cada vez imergimos e desde a qual, então, seriamos (88) transpassados por uma afinação. Tudo não se dá apenas aparentemente como se fosse assim, mas é realmente assim; e em função deste fato vale colocar de lado a psicologia dos sentimentos, das vivências e da consciência. É válido ver e dizer o que acontece aí. Tornou-se evidente que as tonalidades afetivas não são algo que está apenas presente como um dado, mas que elas mesmas são justamente um modo e um jeito fundamental do ser — em verdade, um modo e um jeito fundamental do ser-aí, o que sempre diz ao mesmo tempo da convivência. Elas são jeitos do ser-aí, e, com isto, do ser-fora. Uma tonalidade afetiva é um jeito, não apenas uma forma ou um padrão modal, mas um jeito no sentido de uma melodia, que não paira sobre a assim chamada presença subsistente própria do homem, mas que fornece para este ser o tom, ou seja, que afina e determina o modo e o como de seu ser.

Com isto, temos o positivo no que concerne à primeira tese negativa de que a tonalidade afetiva não é nenhum ente: ela é positivamente um modo fundamental, o jeito fundamental como o ser-aí enquanto ser-aí é. Também temos agora a contratese para a segunda tese negativa de que a tonalidade afetiva não é o que há de mais inconstante, fugidio e meramente subjetivo: à medida que a tonalidade afetiva é o jeito originário, no qual todo e qualquer ser-aí é como ele é, ela não é o maximamente inconstante, mas o que dá ao ser-aí desde o princípio consistência e possibilidade.

A partir de tudo isto, temos de aprender a compreender o que significa tomar as assim chamadas “tonalidades afetivas” de uma maneira correta. Não se trata de circunscrever uma espécie de vivência anímica em contraposição à psicologia e de aprimorar, com isto, esta última, mas, acima de tudo, de abrir primeiramente o olhar para o ser-aí do homem. Tonalidades afetivas são jeitos fundamentais nos quais nos encontramos de um modo ou de outro. Tonalidades afetivas são o como de acordo com o qual as coisas são para alguém de um modo ou de outro. Por razões que não podemos discutir agora, certamente tomamos com frequência este “ser para alguém de um certo modo” como algo indiferente no que concerne ao que temos em vista e àquilo com o que nos ocupamos e que vem a ser junto conosco. Contudo, este “ser para alguém de um modo ou de outro” não é nunca primordialmente a consequência e a manifestação paralela de nosso pensar, agir e não agir. Ao contrário, ele é — grosso modo — o seu pressuposto, o “meio”, no qual primariamente o pensar acontece. E exatamente as (89) tonalidades afetivas para as quais não atentamos de maneira alguma e que observamos ainda menos, as tonalidades afetivas que nos afinam de um tal modo que tudo se dá para nós como se nenhuma tonalidade afetiva estivesse aí, como se nós não estivéssemos absolutamente afinados: exatamente estas tonalidades afetivas são as mais poderosas. A human being who — as we say — is in good humour brings a lively atmosphere with them. Do they, in so doing, bring about an emotional experience which is then transmitted to others, in the [GA29-30:100-101] (67) manner in which infectious germs wander back and forth from one organism to another? We do indeed say that attunement or mood is infectious. Or another human being is with us, someone who through their manner of being makes everything depressing and puts a damper on everything; nobody steps out of their shell. What does this tell us? Attunements are Not side-effects, but are something which in advance determine our being with one another. It seems as though an attunement is in each case already there, so to speak, like an atmosphere in which we first immerse ourselves in each case and which then attunes us through and through. It does not merely seem so, it is so; and, faced with this fact, we must dismiss the psychology of feelings, experiences, and consciousness. It is a matter of seeing and saying what is happening here. It is clear that attunements are not something merely at Hand. They themselves are precisely a fundamental manner and fundamental way of being, indeed of being-there (Da-sein), and this always directly includes being with one another. Attunements are ways of the being-there of Da-sein, and thus ways of being-away. An attunement is a way, not merely a form or a mode, but a way (Weise) — in the sense of a melody that does not merely hover over the so-called proper being at hand of Man, but that sets the tone for such being, i.e., attunes and determines the manner and way (Art und Wie) of his being.

Thus we have the positive correlate of our first negative thesis, namely that attunement is not a particular being. In positive terms, attunement is a fundamental manner, the fundamental way in which Dasein is as Dasein. We now also have the counterthesis to our second negative thesis that attunement is not something inconstant, fleeting, merely subjective. Rather because attunement is the originary way in which every Dasein is as it is, it is not what is most inconstant, but that which gives Dasein subsistence and possibility in its very foundations.

We must learn to understand from all this what it means to take so-called ‘attunements’ in the correct way. It is not a matter of taking up an opposite stance to psychology and delimiting more correctly a kind of emotional experience, thus improving psychology, but rather a matter of first opening up a general perspective upon the Dasein of man. Attunements are the fundamental ways in which we find ourselves disposed in such and such a way. Attunements are the ‘how’ ( Wie) according to which one is in such and such a way. Certainly we often take this ‘one is in such and such a way’ — for reasons we shall not go into now — as something indifferent, in contrast to what we intend to do, what we are occupied with, or what will happen to us. And yet this ‘one is in such and such a way’ is not — is never — simply a consequence or side-effect of our thinking, doing, and acting. It is — to put it crudely — the presupposition (68) [GA29-30:101-103] for such things, the ‘medium’ within which they first happen. And precisely those attunements to which we pay no heed at all, the attunements we least observe, those attunements which attune us in such a way that we feel as though there is no attunement there at all, as though we were not attuned in any way at all — these attunements are the most powerful. Ein — Wie Wir sagen — gut aufgelegter Mensch bringt Stimmung in eine Gesellschaft. Erzeugt er da bei sich ein seelisches Erlebnis, um es dann auf die Anderen zu übertragen, so, wie Infektionskeime von einem Organismus in den anderen hinüber und herüber wandern? Wir sagen zwar: Die Stimmung steckt an. Oder ein anderer Mensch ist in einer Gesellschaft, der durch seine Art zu Sein alles dämpft und niederdrückt; keiner geht aus sich heraus. Was entnehmen wir hieraus? Die Stimmungen sind keine Begleiterscheinungen, sondern solches, was im vorhinein gerade das Miteinandersein bestimmt. Es scheint so, als sei gleichsam je eine Stimmung schon da, wie eine Atmosphäre, in die wir je erst eintauchten und von der wir dann durchstimmt würden. Es sieht Nicht nur so aus, als ob es so sei, sondern es ist so, und es gilt, angesichts dieses Tatbestandes die Psychologie der Gefühle und der Erlebnisse und des Bewußtseins zu verabschieden. Es gilt, zu sehen und zu sagen, was da geschieht. Es zeigt sich: Stimmungen sind nicht etwas, das nur Vorhanden ist, sondern sie Selbst sind gerade eine Grundart (101) uild Grundweise des Seins, und zwar des Da-seins, und darin liegt unmittelbar immer: des Miteinanderseins. Sie sind Weisen des Da-seins und damit solche des Weg-seins. Eine Stimmung ist eine Weise, nicht bloß eine Form oder ein Modus, sondern eine Weise im Sinne einer Melodie, die nicht über dem sogenannten eigentlichen Vorhandensein des Menschen schwebt, sondern für dieses Sein den Ton angibt, d. h. die Art und das Wie seines Seins stimmt und bestimmt.

So Haben wir das Positive zur ersten negativen These, daß die Stimmung kein Seiendes ist: Sie ist positiv eine Grandart, die Grundweise, wie das Dasein als Dasein ist. Wir haben Jetzt auch schon die Gegenthese zur zweiten negativen These, daß die Stimmung nicht das Unbeständige, Flüchtige, bloß Subjektive ist: Weil die Stimmung das ursprüngliche Wie ist, in dem jedes Dasein ist, wie es ist, ist sie nicht das Unbeständigste, sondern das, was dem Dasein von Grund auf Bestand und Möglichkeit gibt.

Aus all dem müssen wir Verstehen Lernen, was es heißt, die sogenannten »Stimmungen« in der rechten Weise zu nehmen. Es geht nicht darum, in der Gegenstellung zur Psychologie eine Art seelischer Erlebnisse richtiger zu umgrenzen und damit die Psychologie zu verbessern, sondern überhaupt erst den Blick zu Öffnen für das Dasein des Menschen. Stimmungen sind die Grundweisen, in denen wir uns so und so befinden. Stimmungen sind das Wie, gemäß dem einem so und so ist. Dieses »es ist einem so und so« nehmen wir freilich — aus gründen, die jetzt nicht zu erörtern sind — oft als etwas Gleichgültiges gegenüber dem, was wir Vorhaben, gegenüber dem, Womit wir beschäftigt sind, was mit uns wird. Und doch: Dieses »es ist einem so und so« ist nicht und nie erst die Folge unds Begleiterscheinung unseres Denkens, Tuns und Lassens, sondern — grob gesprochen — die Voraussetzung dafür, das »Medium«, darin erst jenes geschieht. Und gerade die Stimmungen, die wir gar nicht beachten und noch weniger beobachten, jene Stimmungen, die uns so stimmen, daß es uns ist, (102) als sei überhaupt keine Stimmung da, als seien wir überhaupt nicht gestimmt, diese Stimmungen sind die mächtigsten.
