Em sua essência, o ente que nós mesmos respectivamente somos, o homem, é um neutro. Denominamos esse ente: o ser-aí . Todavia, faz parte da essência desse ente neutro o fato de ele, contanto que exista, a cada vez, de maneira fática, necessariamente romper a sua neutralidade. Ou seja: como um ente fático, o ser-aí sempre é, a cada vez, masculino ou feminino, ou seja, ele é um ser sexuado; esse fato encerra em si um um-com-o-outro e um um-em-relação-ao-outro totalmente determinados. Os limites e a amplitude da atuação desse caráter sempre são a cada vez faticamente diversos; não se pode aqui senão mostrar que possibilidades da existência humana não são determinadas pela relação de sexos ou pela relação de gêneros . Por si só, justamente essa relação de sexos (relação de gêneros) só é possível porque o ser-aí já é determinado em sua neutralidade metafísica pelo um-com-o-outro. Se todo e qualquer ser-aí, sendo sempre a cada vez faticamente masculino ou feminino, já não estivesse um-com-o-outro segundo sua essência, então essa relação de sexos ou essa relação de gêneros permaneceria puramente impossível como relação humana.

(156) Por isso, o contra-senso mais tosco que se pode imaginar é tentar explicar inversamente o um-com-o-outro como determinação essencial do ser-aí a partir da relação de sexos ou a partir da relação de gêneros. Em sua cega e insuficiente oposição ao idealismo alemão, Ludwig Feuerbach levou esse erro a termo. Hoje se tenta renová-lo. No entanto, ele não passa a ser verdade porque procuramos tornar mais palatáveis os materialismos toscos de Feuerbach com o auxílio da fenomenologia atual. A tese fundamental da antropologia feuerbachiana, de sua doutrina do homem, é a seguinte: o homem é aquilo que come . Essa tese tem algo de correto. Contudo, sempre que algo semiverdadeiro é declarado um princípio universal, o resultado não é outro senão confusão.

À essência do homem pertence essa neutralidade rompida de sua essência. Todavia, isso significa que essa essência só pode ser problematizada primariamente a partir dessa neutralidade e somente com relação a essa neutralidade é possível a quebra da neutralidade mesma. Nesse problema, a questão do sexo ou do gênero é apenas um momento e, com efeito, não o momento primário (o estar-jogado). Na medida em que o ser-aí existe agora como ser-aí corpóreo, a apreensão fática do outro por um ser-aí e de um ser-aí pelo outro se acha submetida a condições determinadas. As relações corporalmente co-condicionadas de apreensão mútua entre os seres-aí não constituem, porém, o um-com-o-outro, mas o pressupõem e são, por sua vez, determinadas por ele.

Para deixar claro desde o começo que o um-com-o-outro nem chega a termo primariamente por meio do caminho que leva para além de um eu individualizado, nem pode ser esclarecido a partir da relação eu-tu, a análise foi iniciada no ser junto a um ente por si subsistente. Mas, se o ser junto a... é um momento essencial do um-com-o-outro, então o ser junto a... também precisa continuar (157) sendo determinante para as diversas possibilidades fáticas do um-com-o-outro, ou, a título de exemplo, da comunidade.

In its essence, the being that we in each case are, the human being, is a neuter. We name this being: Dasein. Yet it belongs to the essence of this neuter that, insofar as it exists factically in each case, it has necessarily fractured its neutrality; that is, Dasein, as factical, is in each case either male or female, it is a sexual being; this entails a quite determinate with-one-another and toward-one-another. The limit and extent of the effects of this characteristic are factically different in each case; it can only be shown which possibilities of human existence are Not necessarily determined by the sexual relationship. Yet precisely this sexual relationship is possible only because Dasein in its metaphysical neutrality is already determined by the with-one-another. If each Dasein, which factically is in each case male or female, were not already with one another in accordance with its essence, then a human sexual relationship would remain altogether impossible.

It is therefore the crudest nonsense imaginable when one tries to explain the with-one-another as determination of the essence of Dasein the other way around, on the basis of the sexual relationship. Ludwig Feuerbach, in a blind and inadequate opposition to German Idealism, introduced this error, an error that people are attempting to replicate today, but that does not become truth by people trying to make Feuerbach’s crude materialism more tasteful with the aid of contemporary phenomenology. The fundamental thesis of Feuerbach’s anthropology, his doctrine of the human being, runs: the human being is what he eats.3 This thesis contains something right—but when something half-true is declared as a universal principle, confusion always arises.

To the essence of the human being belongs this fractured neutrality of the human essence, which is to say, however, that this essence can be made a Problem only primarily starting from neutrality, and only in relation to this neutrality is the fracture of neutrality itself possible. Sexuality is only one moment within this problem and, indeed, not the primary one (thrownness). Because Dasein exists as bodily, the factical apprehension of the other by the one and of the one by the other is subject to certain conditions; but the relations of apprehension between Dasein and Dasein, relations that are coconditioned in a bodily manner, do not constitute the with-one-another but rather presuppose it and are for their part determined by it.

In order to make it clear from the beginning that the with-one-another neither comes about primarily by way of an individuated I, nor can it be explained in terms of the I-You relationship, the analysis started from being alongside something present at Hand. Yet if being alongside . . . is an essential moment of the with-one-another, then being alongside . . . must also remain determinative for the various factical possibilities of the with-one-another, of community, for example.

In seinem Wesen ist das Seiende, das Wir je sind, der Mensch, ein Neutrum. Wir nennen dieses Seiende: das Dasein. Aber zum Wesen dieses Neutrums gehört es, daß es, sofern es je faktisch existiert, notwendig seine Neutralität gebrochen hat, d.h. das Dasein ist als faktisches je entweder männlich oder weiblich, es ist Geschlechtswesen; das schließt ein ganz bestimmtes mit-und Zueinander in sich ein. Die Grenze und Weite der Auswirkung dieses Charakters ist faktisch je verschieden; es läßt sich nur zeigen, welche Möglichkeiten der menschlichen Existenz Nicht notwendig durch das Geschlechtsverhältnis Bestimmt sind. Allein, gerade dieses Geschlechtsverhältnis ist nur möglich, weil das Dasein in seiner metaphysischen Neutralität schon durch das Miteinander bestimmt ist. Wäre nicht schon jedes Dasein, das faktisch je männlich oder weiblich ist, seinem Wesen nach miteinander, dann bliebe ein Geschlechtsverhältnis als menschliches schlechthin unmöglich.

Es ist daher der gröbste Widersinn, der sich ausdenken läßt, wenn Man versucht, das Miteinander als Wesensbestimmung des Daseins umgekehrt aus dem Geschlechtsverhältnis zu erklären. Ludwig Feuerbach hat in einer blinden und unzureichenden Opposition gegen den deutschen Idealismus diesen Irrtum aufgebracht, einen Irrtum, den man heute zu erneuern versucht, der aber nicht dadurch zur Wahrheit wird, daß man die groben Materialismen Feuerbachs mit Hilfe der heutigen (147) Phänomenologie schmackhafter zu machen sucht. Die Grundthese der Feuerbachschen Anthropologie, seiner Lehre vom Menschen, lautet: Der Mensch ist, Was er ißt. Diese These hat etwas Richtiges — aber immer, wenn etwas Halbwahres zu einem universalen Prinzip erklärt wird, entsteht Verwirrung.

Zum Wesen des Menschen gehört diese gebrochene Neutralität seines Wesens, d.h. aber, dieses Wesen kann nur primär von der Neutralität aus zum Problem Gemacht Werden, und nur mit Bezug auf diese Neutralität ist der Bruch der Neutralität Selbst möglich. In diesem Problem ist die Geschlechtlichkeit nur ein Moment und. zwar nicht das Primäre (Geworfenheit). Weil nun das Dasein als leibliches existiert, unterliegt die faktische Erfassung des Anderen durch den einen und des einen durch den anderen bestimmten Bedingungen; aber die leiblich mitbedingten Bezüge des Erfassens von Dasein und Dasein konstituieren nicht das Miteinander, sondern setzen es voraus und sind ihrerseits dadurch bestimmt.

Um nun von Anfang deutlich zu machen, daß das Miteinander primär weder auf dem Wege über ein vereinzeltes Ich zustande kommt, noch aus dem Ich-Du-Verhältnis erklärt werden kann, wurde die Analyse im Sein bei einem Vorhandenen angesetzt. Aber wenn das Sein bei .. . ein Wesensmoment des Miteinander ist, dann muß das Sein bei . . . auch bestimmend bleiben für die verschiedenen faktischen Möglichkeiten des Miteinander, der Gemeinschaft beispielsweise.
