The existence of Dasein is determined by the for-the-sake-of. It is Dasein’s defining characteristic (Auszeichnende) that it is concerned with this being, in its being, in a specific way. Dasein exists for the sake of Dasein’s being and its capacity-for-being. But, one might immediately object, here we have just provided a determination of the contents of the for-the-sake-of, and we have pinned down the final purpose that is one-sided in the greatest degree; it is an extreme egoism, the clearest delusion to assert that all beings, including nature and culture and whatever else there might be, only exist in each case for the individual human being and his egotistic goals. In fact, if this were the sense of the claim of the ontology of Dasein, then it would indeed be madness. But then neither would it be explicable why one would need an analysis of Dasein in order to assert such outrageous nonsense. On the other Hand, finally, Kant has said that Man exists as an end in himself.

But things are Not finally so simple if the statement of essence, “It belongs to Dasein’s essence to be concerned about its own being,” occurs within a metaphysics of Dasein. In that case it would be completely superfluous were one to correct the statement by pointing to the many humans who sacrifice themselves for others and who perish in friendship and community with others. To correct the statement in this way is superfluous, because such a correction would correct something it cannot correct. For the aforementioned statement is not at all an ontic assertion claiming that all existing humans in fact use or even should use all that surrounds them solely for their own particular egotistic aims. The ontological statement, “It belongs to the essence of Dasein that its own being resides in its for-the-sake-of,” does not exclude humans from being in fact concerned about the being of others; this ontological statement, moreover, supplies the metaphysical ground of the possibility for anything like Dasein to be able to be with others, for them and through them. In other words, if the statement, (187) “It belongs to Dasein’s essence that in its being it is concerned with this being itself,” is located at the beginning of an ontological analysis of Dasein and in direct connection with the statement of transcendence, then it is a simple imperative of even the most primitive methodology to at least ask whether or not this ontological statement of essence does or could present an ontic claim from a world-view that preaches a so-called individualistic egoism.

This statement, and all those connected with it, does not deal with an existentiell, ethical egoism, but it deals rather with the ontological-metaphysical description of the egoicity (Egoität) of Dasein as such. Only because Dasein is primarily determined by egoicity can it factically exist as a thou for and with another Dasein. The thou is not an ontic replicate of a facti cal ego; but neither can a thou exist as such and be itself as thou for another ego if it is not at all Dasein, i.e., if it is not grounded in egoicity. The egoicity belonging to the transcendence of Dasein is the metaphysical condition of the possibility for a thou to be able to exist and for an I-thou relationship to be able to exist. The thou is also most immediately thou if it is not simply another ego, but rather a “you yourself are.” This selfhood, however, is its freedom, and this freedom is identical with egoicity, on the basis of which Dasein can, in the first place, ever be either egoistic or altruistic.

Indeed, the very fact that we can make the I-thou relation into a Problem at all indicates that we are transcending each factual ego and factual thou and that we grasp the relation as a relation of Dasein as such, i.e., we grasp the relation in its metaphysical neutrality and egoicity. Of course we usually do so without suspecting anything of these presuppositions we take for granted. However rich and interesting the analysis of possible I-thou relationships may be, it cannot solve the metaphysical problem of Dasein, because it cannot even pose the problem. With its first approach, such an analysis already presupposes, in some form, the entire analysis of Dasein and constantly employs it. Today, for quite a variety of reasons, the problem of the I-thou relation is of great interest to world-views. There are sociological, theological, political, biological, and ethical problems which ascribe a prominence to the I-thou relation; yet the philosophical problems are thereby concealed.

Here we see then a new difficulty characteristic of the problem of subjectivity and of every ontology of Dasein. The first difficulty Was with regard to illegitimately roping the closed subject off from all objects, the misguided view that the most presuppositionless (188) approach is the one beginning with a worldless subject. The difficulty we are considering now, however, is with regard to the view that an approach beginning with a subject, though in the end a transcending subject, is an even more individualistic, more egotistic subjectivism; that the more radically one makes an ontology of Dasein into a problem and task, the more extremely must one embrace individualism – let us correct this – the more such individualism seems to obtrude, along with the difficulty of holding and maintaining the ontological intent.

Die Existenz des Daseins ist bestimmt durch das umwillen – es ist das Auszeichnende des Daseins, daß es diesem Seienden in seinem Sein in einer spezifischen Weise um dieses selbst geht. Das Sein und Seinkönnen des Daseins ist es, umwillen dessen es existiert. Aber – wird man sofort einwenden – nun Haben Wir doch eine inhaltliche Bestimmung des Umwillen gegeben und den Endzweck des Daseins fixiert: er ist das Dasein Selbst; und Nicht nur das, sondern wir haben eine Bestimmung des Endzweckes gegeben, die in höchstem Maße einseitig ist; es ist ein extremer Egoismus, der hellste Größenwahn, zu behaupten, alles Seiende, die Natur und Kultur und was es noch geben mag, sei je nur Vorhanden für den einzelnen Menschen und seine egoistischen Zwecke. In der Tat, wäre das (240) der Sinn der daseinsontologischen These, dann wäre sie Wahnwitz; es wäre aber auch nicht einzusehen, Warum es einer Analyse des Daseins bedürfte, um diesen faustdicken Unsinn zu behaupten. Andererseits hat schließlich Kant gesagt: Der Mensch existiert als Zweck seiner selbst.

Am Ende liegen die Dinge so bequem doch nicht, wenn in einer Metaphysik des Daseins die Wesensaussage gefällt wird: Zum Wesen des Daseins gehört es, daß es ihm um sein eigenes Sein geht. Dann ist die Korrektur völlig überflüssig, die darin liegen möchte, daß man darauf hinweist, Wie viele Menschen sich doch gerade für Andere opfern und in der Freundschaft für andere und der Gemeinschaft mit ihnen Aufgehen. Die Korrektur ist überflüssig, weil sie etwas korrigieren möchte, was sie gar nicht korrigieren kann. Denn der genannte Satz ist ja keine ontische Behauptung darüber, daß alle existierenden Menschen faktisch jeweils alles, was um sie herum ist, lediglich zu je ihren bestimmten egoistischen Zwecken benutzen oder gar benutzen sollten. Der ontologische Satz – zum Wesen des Daseins gehört es, daß sein eigenes Sein in seinem Umwillen steht – schließt so wenig aus, daß es faktisch dem Menschen gerade um das Sein des Anderen geht, daß er, dieser ontologische Satz, gerade den metaphysischen Grund der Möglichkeit dafür angibt, daß so etwas wie Dasein ein Mitsein mit Anderen, für diese und durch diese sein kann. Mit anderen Worten: wenn der Satz – zum Wesen des Daseins gehört es, daß es ihm in seinem Sein um dieses selbst geht – am Anfang einer ontologischen Analytik des Daseins und in unmittelbarem Zusammenhang mit dem Satz der Transzendenz steht, dann ist es ein einfaches Gebot primitivster Methodik, sich zum mindesten zu fragen, ob mit diesem ontologischen Wesenssatz eine ontische, weltanschauliche These ausgesprochen sei oder sein könne, die einen sogenannten individualistischen Egoismus predige.

In diesem Satz und in Allem, was mit ihm zusammenhängt, handelt es sich nicht um einen existenziellen, ethischen Egoismus, sondern um die ontologisch-metaphysische Kenn-Zeichnung der Egoität des Daseins überhaupt. (241) Nur weil das Dasein primär durch Egoität bestimmt ist, kann es faktisch für ein anderes Dasein und mit ihm als ein Du Existieren. Das Du ist nicht eine ontische Dublette eines faktischen Ich; aber ebensowenig kann ein Du als solches existieren und für ein anderes Ich als Du es selbst sein, wenn es nicht überhaupt Dasein ist, d. h. in der Egoität gründet. Die zur Transzendenz des Daseins gehörige Egoität ist die metaphysische Bedingung der Möglichkeit dafür, daß ein Du existieren und eine Ich-Du-Beziehung existent sein kann. Auch das Du ist am unmittelbarsten Du, wenn es nicht einfach ein anderes Ich ist, wohl aber ein: Du selbst – bist. Diese Selbstheit aber ist seine Freiheit, und diese ist identisch mit der Egoität, aufgrund deren das Dasein allererst je egoistisch oder altruistisch sein kann.

Schon allein darin, daß wir überhaupt die Ich-Du-Beziehung zum Problem machen können, bekundet sich, daß wir das je faktische Ich und faktische Du transzendieren und die Beziehung als eine Daseinsbeziehung überhaupt, d. h. in ihrer metaphysischen Neutralität und Egoität fassen; meist freilich, ohne daß wir von diesen selbstverständlichen Voraussetzungen etwas ahnen. Keine noch so mannigfaltige und interessante Analyse der möglichen Ich-Du-Bezüge vermag das metaphysische Problem des Daseins zu lösen, weil sie es nicht einmal stellen kann, sondern durchgängig und mit dem ersten Ansatz schon die Ganze Analytik des Daseins in irgendeiner Form voraussetzt und ständig von ihr Gebrauch Macht. heute ist das Problem der Ich-Du-Beziehung aus ganz verschiedenen Motivierungen von weltanschaulichem Interesse. Es sind soziologische, theologische, politische, biologische, ethische Probleme, die der Ich-Du-Beziehung eine besondere Bedeutung geben; doch das philosophische Problem wird dadurch verdeckt.

So zeigt sich Hier eine Neue charakteristische Schwierigkeit im Problem der Subjektivität und in jeder Ontologie des Daseins. Die erste betraf die unrechtmäßige Abschnürung des in sich geschlossenen Subjekts von allen Objekten, die verkehrte (242) Meinung, der Ansatz eines Zunächst weltlosen Subjekts sei der voraussetzungsloseste. Die jetzige Schwierigkeit aber betrifft die Meinung, der Ansatz bei einem, wenngleich am Ende transzendierenden Subjekt sei eben individualistischer, egoistischer Subjektivismus, und je radikaler nun eine Ontologie des Daseins zu Problem und Aufgabe Gemacht wird, um so extremer müsse der Individualismus sein; sagen wir richtig: um so aufdringlicher ist der Schein eines solchen und die Schwierigkeit, die ontologische Absicht zu fassen und durchzuhalten.
