¿Qué sacamos de toda esta discusión para nuestro problema principal? Hemos oído que veritas equivale a identitas, verum esse es igual a idem esse; ahora Leibniz dice contra Descartes —según el asunto, aunque no en esta formulación expresa-: verum esse no es igual que clare et distincte perceptum esse, sino que verum esse es igual a adaequate intutive perceptum esse. Al principio, la verdad fue determinada por referencia al enunciado (enuntiatio), esto es, como ser-idéntico, ahora es determinada por referencia a la idea del conocimiento en general. ¿Cómo se compagina la definición de la verdad puesta antes de relieve, verum igual a idem esse, con la de ahora, verum igual a adaequate intuitive perceptum esse? Con mayor precisión: ¿tiene el idem esse lo más mínimo que ver con el adaequate intuitive perceptum? Aquí parece que se presenta una dificultad insoluble; la identidad y el carácter de aprehendido de modo adecuadamente intuitivo no pueden ponerse juntos como definición de uno (84) y el mismo concepto de verdad. ¿Qué quiere decir en general identidad? Idem significa la misma cosa; ¿se quiere decir con ello que varias cosas son la misma cosa?

Pero si tratamos de ver más agudamente cuanto hasta ahora se ha dicho, se pone de relieve que esta dificultad no sólo es soluble, sino que precisamente ahora estamos en disposición de comprender más claramente lo que Leibniz quiere significar con identidad, sin que él mismo lo haya explicado.

En el conocimiento adecuado, lo conocido es el totum de los requisita, es decir, aquello que, como todo, constituye la realidad de una cosa; lo que se conoce es lo verdadero, lo verum; este todo de los requisita es la possibilitas, aquello mismo que hace posible la quididad de la cosa. El contenido de la cosa es en sí mismo compatible, pues sólo esta compatibilidad puede hacerla posible. La incompatibilidad, en tanto que oposición, rompe, por decirlo así, la esencia de una cosa; se destruye en sí misma; ella no ‘puede ser’. Lo conocido en el conocimiento adecuado es la conexión de las determinaciones, compatibles entre sí de una cosa y, naturalmente, si se conoce la cosa adecuadamente, se la conoce precisamente en relación a la compatibilidad de sus realidades. El conocimiento adecuado es la aprehensión total de la concordancia de la multiplicidad.

Pero anteriormente hemos llegado a que el juicio es una connexio, y naturalmente, una connexio realis; pero esta connexio es aprehendida como identitas, esto quiere decir: lo que está en el nexus y se aprehende en la connexio no se separa, no se opone a sí mismo, sino que todo en sí está unificado y se refiere como determinación a uno y el mismo qué —lo idéntico en su identidad —.

Por esta razón, la identidad no significa, en el fondo, uniformidad vacía, privada de toda distinción, sino exactamente lo contrario, toda la riqueza de las determinaciones reales en su compatibilidad libre de contradicciones. Identidad no es el concepto negativo de la falta de toda distinción, sino, al contrario, la idea de la un-animidad de lo diferente. (85)

What can we extract from this whole discussion for our main Problem? We learned that truth is equivalent to identity and that to be true is to be identical. Now Leibniz says against Descartes, in effect, if Not in so many words, that to be true is not the same as to be perceived clearly and distinctly. Instead he says that to be (68) true is equivalent to being adequately perceived by intuition. At first truth Was defined in relation to the statement (enuntiatio), namely, as being identical. Now truth is defined in relation to the idea of knowledge as such. How is the earlier Definition of truth, verum is equivalent to idem esse, connected with the present de· finition, verum is equivalent to adaequate intuitive perceptum esse (being adequately perceived intuitively)? More precisely, how does idem esse (being identical) have the slightest thing to do with adaequate intuitive perceptum esse? There seems to be an insoluble difficulty here. Identity and being perceived with adequate intuition cannot be joined in the definition of one and the same concept, the concept of truth. What does identity mean anyway? Idem means “the same.” Does it mean that several things are the same?

If we try to see more sharply what we have already said, then we find that not only is this difficulty soluble but we find ourselves now in a position to grasp more clearly what Leibniz means by “identity,” without his having expressly explained it himself.

In adequate knowledge that which is known is the totum of the requisita, i.e., that which, as a whole, constitutes the reality of a thing. This thing known is the true, the verum; the totality of the requisita is the possibilitas, that which makes possible the thingness of the thing. This content of the res (thing) is compatible with itself, far only by being compatible can it make possible. Incompatibility as conflict breaks apart, as it were, the essence of a thing; it falls apart and “can” not “be.” What is known in adequate knowledge is the coherent connection of the thing’s mutually compatible determinations. In fact, the thing, if adequately known, is known precisely with regard to the compatibility of its realities. Adequate knowledge is the total grasp of the harmony of multiplicity.

But we previously came to the conclusion that judgment is a connectio, and specifically a connectio realis. This connection is grasped as identitas. And this implies that what is in the nexus, what is grasped in the connectio does not fall apart, does not clash with itself, but all is in itself unified and, as determination, relates to one and the same, to what the thing is, to the identical in its identity.

Identity does not then basically refer to an empty uniformity stripped of difference. On the contrary, it means the entire richness of real determinations in their compatibility without conflict Identity is not the negative concept of the absence of all differentiation. It is, conversely, the idea of the uni-sonous unity of what is different.

Genauer: hat das idem esse irgend das Geringste zu Tun mit dem adaequate intuitive perceptum? Hier scheint eine unauflösbare Schwierigkeit vorzuliegen; Identität und adäquate intuitive Erfaßt-heit sind nicht zusammenzubringen als Definition ein und desselben Begriffes, (84) des Begriffes der Wahrheit. Was heißt überhaupt Identität? Idem bedeutet dasselbe; – ist gemeint, daß mehreres dasselbe sei?

Wenn wir aber versuchen, bereits Gesagtes schärfer zu sehen, dann zeigt sich, daß diese Schwierigkeit nicht nur auflösbar ist, sondern daß wir jetzt gerade instand gesetzt sind, das deutlicher zu fassen, was Leibniz mit »ldentität« meint – ohne es Selbst ausdrücklich zu erörtern.

In der adäquaten Erkenntnis ist das Erkannte das totum der requisita, d. h. das, was als Ganzes die Realität einer res. ausmacht; dieses Erkannte ist das Wahre, das verum; dieses Ganze der requisita ist die possibilitas, das, was selbst die Sachheit der Sache möglich Macht. Dieser Gehalt der res ist in sich selbst verträglich, denn nur in dieser Verträglichkeit kann er möglich machen. Unverträglichkeit als Widerstreit bricht gleichsam das Wesen einer Sache Auseinander; sie zerfällt in sich, sie »kann« nicht »Sein«. Das in der adäquaten Erkenntnis Erkannte ist der Zusammenhang der unter sich verträglichen Bestimmtheiten einer Sache, und zwar ist die Sache, wenn adäquat erkannt, gerade hinsichtlich der Verträglichkeit ihrer Realitäten erkannt. Adäquate Erkenntnis ist die totale Erfassung der Einstimmigkeit der Vielfältigkeit.

Nun ergab sich aber früher: Das Urteil ist eine connexio, und zwar eine connexio realis; diese connexio aber ist gefaßt als identitas, das will sagen: Was in dem nexus steht und in der connexio erfaßt wird, fällt nicht auseinander, widerstreitet sich nicht, sondern alles ist in sich einig und betrifft als Bestimmtheit das eine und Selbe Was – das Identische in seiner Identität.

Identität besagt daher im Grunde nicht Leere Einerleiheit, die jedes Unterschiedes bar ist, sondern gerade umgekehrt den ganzen Reichtum der realen Bestimmtheiten in ihrer freilich widerstreitfreien Verträglichkeit. Identität ist nicht der negative Begriff des Fehlens jeder Unterschiedenheit, sondern umgekehrt die Idee der Ein-Stimmung des Verschiedenen.
