¿Por qué vía cabe penetrar en el sentido del ser en general? Si – como es habitual – se es dogmáticamente de la opinión de que el ser es el concepto más general y más simple, ¿no es la cuestión por el sentido del ser y la tarea de una aclaración de este concepto una pseudocuestión? ¿A partir de qué puede ser determinado y en qué se puede analizar?

Algo así como el ser se nos da en la comprensión del ser; en la comprensión del ser que subyace en todo comportamiento respecto del ente. Los comportamientos respecto del ente pertenecen, por su parte, a un determinado ente, aquel que somos nosotros mismos, el Dasein humano. A este pertenece la comprensión del ser que posibilita antes que nada todo comportarse respecto del ente. La comprensión del ser tiene ella misma el modo de ser del Dasein humano. Cuanto más originaria y adecuadamente determinemos este ente respecto de la estructura de su ser, es decir, lo determinemos ontológicamente, con mayor seguridad estaremos en disposición de captar, en su estructura, la comprensión del ser que pertenece al Dasein y con mayor claridad se podrá entonces plantear la cuestión: ¿Qué es lo que hace posible esta comprensión del ser en general? ¿A partir de qué, es decir, a partir de qué horizonte previamente dado comprendemos algo así como el ser?

El análisis de la comprensión del ser en relación con lo que es específico de ésta y con lo que es comprendido en ella o con su comprensibilidad presupone una analítica del Dasein orientada a ello. Esta tiene la tarea de poner de relieve la constitución (22) fundamental del Dasein humano y de caracterizar el sentido del ser del Dasein. Como constitución originaria del ser del Dasein se muestra, en la analítica ontológica del Dasein, la temporalidad (Zeitlichkeit). La interpretación de la temporalidad lleva a una comprensión y conceptualización del tiempo más radicales de lo que fue posible hasta hoy en la filosofía. El concepto consabido y tradicional de tiempo tal como se ha conocido en la filosofía es sólo un derivado de la temporalidad como sentido originario del Dasein. Si la temporalidad constituye el sentido del ser del Dasein humano y si a la constitución del ser del Dasein pertenece la comprensión del ser, entonces asimismo esta comprensión del ser sólo puede ser posible sobre la base de la temporalidad. De aquí se sigue la perspectiva de una posible demostración de la tesis de que el tiempo es el horizonte a partir del cual se hace comprensible algo así como el ser. Interpretamos el ser a partir del tiempo (tempus). La interpretación es temporánea (temporale). On what path can we advance toward the meaning of being in general? Is Not the question of the meaning of being and the task of an elucidation of this concept a pseudo-Problem if, as usual, the opinion is held dogmatically that being is the most general and simplest concept? What is the source for defining this concept and in what direction is it to be resolved?

Something like being reveals itself to us in the understanding of being, an understanding that lies at the root of all comportment toward beings. Comportments toward beings belong, on their part, to a definite being, the being which we ourselves are, the human Dasein. It is to the human Dasein that there belongs the understanding of being which first of all makes possible every comportment toward beings. The understanding of being has itself the mode of being of the human Dasein. The more originally and appropriately we define this being in regard to the structure of its being, that is to say, ontologically, the more securely we are placed in a position to comprehend in its structure the understanding of being that belongs to the Dasein, and the more clearly and unequivocally the question can then be posed, What is it that makes this understanding of being possible at all? Whence—that is, from which antecedently given horizon—do we understand the like of being?

The analysis of the understanding of being in regard to what is specific to this understanding and what is understood in it or its intelligibility presupposes an analytic of the Dasein ordered to that end. This analytic has the task of exhibiting the basic constitution of the human Dasein and of characterizing the meaning of the Dasein’s being. In this ontological analytic of the Dasein, the original constitution of the Dasein’s being is revealed to be temporality. The interpretation of temporality leads to a more radical understanding and conceptual comprehension of time than has been possible hitherto in philosophy. The familiar concept of time as traditionally treated in philosophy is only an offshoot of temporality as the original meaning of the Dasein. If temporality constitutes the meaning of the being of the human Dasein and if understanding of being belongs to the constitution of the Dasein’s being, then this understanding of being, too, must be possible only on the basis of temporality. Hence there arises the prospect of a possible confirmation of the thesis that time is the horizon from which something like being becomes at all intelligible. We interpret being by way of time (tempus). The interpretation is a Temporal one. The fundamental subject of research in ontology, as determination of the meaning of being by way of time, is Temporality. (p. 16-17)

Auf welchem Wege läßt sich zum Sinn des Seins überhaupt Vordringen? ist die Frage nach dem Sinn des Seins und die Aufgabe einer Erläuterung dieses Begriffes Nicht eine Scheinfrage, wenn Man — Wie üblich — dogmatisch der Meinung ist, Sein sei der allgemeinste und einfachste Begriff? Woher soll er bestimmt und Wohin soll er aufgelöst Werden?

Dergleichen wie Sein gibt sich uns im Seinsverständnis, im Verstehen von Sein, das jedem Verhalten zu Seiendem zugrunde liegt. Verhaltungen zu Seiendem eignen ihrerseits einem bestimmten Seienden, das Wir Selbst sind, dem menschlichen Dasein. Zu diesem gehört das jede Verhaltung zu Seiendem allererst ermöglichende Verstehen von Sein. Das Verstehen von Sein hat selbst die Seinsart des menschlichen Daseins. Je ursprünglicher und angemessener wir dieses Seiende hinsichtlich seiner Seinsstruktur, d. h. ontologisch bestimmen, um so sicherer werden wir instand gesetzt werden, das zum Dasein gehörende Seinsverständnis in seiner Struktur zu begreifen, um so eindeutiger läßt sich dann die Frage stellen: Was ist es, was dieses Verstehen von Sein überhaupt möglich Macht? Von wo aus, das heißt: aus welchem vorgegebenen Horizont her verstehen wir dergleichen wie Sein?

Die Analyse des Seinsverständnisses hinsichtlich seines spezifischen Verstehens und des in ihm Verstandenen bzw. seiner Verstehbarkeit setzt eine daraufhin geordnete Analytik des Daseins voraus. Diese hat die Aufgabe, die Grundverfassung des menschlichen Daseins herauszustellen und den Sinn des (22) Seins des Daseins zu charakterisieren. als ursprüngliche Verfassung des Seins des Daseins enthüllt sich der ontologischen Analytik des Daseins die Zeitlichkeit. Die Interpretation der Zeitlichkeit führt zu einem radikaleren Verständnis und Begreifen der Zeit, als das in der bisherigen Philosophie möglich war. Der uns bekannte und traditionell in der Philosophie abgehandelte Begriff der Zeit ist nur ein Ableger der Zeitlichkeit als des ursprünglichen Sinnes des Daseins. Wenn die Zeitlichkeit den Seinssinn des menschlichen Daseins konstituiert, zur Seinsverfassung des Daseins aber Seinsverständnis gehört, dann muß auch dieses Seinsverständnis nur auf dem Grunde der Zeitlichkeit möglich werden. Hieraus erwächst die Aussicht auf eine Mögliche Bewährung der These: Der Horizont, aus dem her dergleichen wie Sein überhaupt verständlich wird, ist die Zeit. Wir interpretieren das Sein aus der Zeit (tempus). Die Interpretation ist eine temporale. Die Grundproblematik der Ontologie als der Bestimmung des Sinnes des Seins aus der Zeit ist die der Temporalität. (p. 21-22)
