Si determinamos así la existencia mediante la constitución del ser-en-el-mundo, podría ser evidente decir que como base de la interpretación de la existencia se está poniendo una estructura biológica universal. Una estructura biológica universal en la medida en que, en cierto modo, este carácter de ser-en-el-mundo conviene también a los animales y a las plantas; en la medida en que, en tanto que son, tienen su mundo, su medio determinado, más reducido o más amplio, de modo que en este horizonte, por cuanto respecta a la existencia en el sentido del ser del hombre, esta determinación de ser del ser-en-el-mundo es sólo un modo de esta determinación genérica universal de tener un mundo. Parece evidente tomar de hecho así las cosas. (175) Pero en una observación más atenta se aprecia que tal vez tengamos que atribuir esta estructura a los animales y a las plantas, pero que eso sólo es posible en la medida en que esta misma estructura la hemos comprendido en nuestra propia existencia en cuanto tal.

La base biológica, es decir, esta estructura fundamental para el ente que en sentido estricto llamamos biológico, sólo puede obtenerse si esta estructura ya está entendida de entrada como estructura de la existencia, y no al revés: no podemos tomar esta determinación por ejemplo de la biología, sino que tiene que obtenerse filosóficamente. Es decir, ni siquiera la biología tiene la posibilidad de ver estas estructuras en sus objetos específicos mientras siga siendo biología, pues en tanto que biología, cuando dice «animal» y «planta», está presuponiendo ya en general estas estructuras. La biología sólo puede fijar y determinar estas estructuras en tanto que ella misma excede sus propios límites y se convierte en filosofía. Y de hecho, en el curso del desarrollo de la biología moderna, sobre todo en el siglo XIX, se ha apuntado repetidas veces, aunque con caracterizaciones del todo generales y con conceptos muy vagos, a esta estructura por la cual los animales sobre todo, pero en cierto sentido también las plantas, tienen un mundo. Por cuanto yo sé, el primero que se encontró de nuevo con estos asuntos —Aristóteles ya los había visto— es el biólogo K. E. v. Baer, quien en sus diversas conferencias remitió, en realidad no temática pero sí incidentalmente, a estas estructuras. Sus sugerencias las ha recogido recientemente v. Uexküll, quien ha tratado este problema ahora temáticamente, pero no en un sentido filosófico, sino 216 en el contexto de investigaciones específicamente biológicas.

Insisto en que señalando la circunstancia de esta estructura de la existencia, considerándolo filosóficamente, en principio no se ha ganado mucho, sino que lo que importa es justamente comprender esta estructura en su sentido de ser. Como horizonte regional para la biología y para toda psicología, que recientemente gusta de llamarse antropología, se presupone la pregunta filosófica por la estructura de la existencia misma, una pregunta filosófica que, dicho con más precisión, es una pregunta categorial que con un planteamiento psicológico o biológico no sólo no se responde, sino que ni siquiera se alcanza en absoluto.

Some might think that when we define existence in terms of the structure of being-in-the-world, we are grounding our interpretation of existence in some general biological structure. (215) This characteristic of being-in-the-world, they might say, pertains in a certain sense also to plants and animals, because to the degree that they are at all, they have their worlds, their own specific (broad or narrow) environments. This ontological determination "being-in-the-world," if understood within that horizon and applied to existence (the being of human beings) is, they will say, merely a species of the broader genus called "to have a world." It is a short step to understanding things that way. But on closer view it is clear that whereas we may have to attribute "having a world" to plants and animals, we can do so only insofar as we have first understood this structure as it pertains to our own existence as such.

We can arrive at the biological basis of human being — i.e., the basic structure of our "biological being" in the narrow sense — only if beforehand we have already understood "biological being" as a structure of existence. It does Not work in reverse. We cannot derive the determination "being-in-the-world" from biology. It must be acquired philosophically. This means that even biology qua biology cannot see the structures of "biological being" in its specific objects, for qua biology it already presupposes such structures when it speaks of plants and animals. Biology can establish and determine these structures only by transgressing its own limits and becoming philosophy. And in fact more than once in the course of the development of modern biology, especially in the nineteenth century (although only in very general characterizations and vague concepts), biologists have referred to this structure and to the fact that animals above all, and plants in a certain sense, have a world. To my knowledge the first person to have run across these matters again (Aristotle had already seen them) Was the biologist K. E. von Baer, who referred to these structures in his various lectures, but only in passing, never really thematically. More recently his suggestions have been taken up by von Uexküll, who now deals with this Problem (182) thematically, not in a (216) philosophical sense, however, but in connection with specific investigations in biology.

I must emphasize that from these references we at first gain very little philosophically for being-in-the-world as a structure of existence. The point now is to understand the meaning of the being of this structure. The regional horizon for biology and for all of psychology (which nowadays likes to call itself anthropology) presupposes the philosophical question about the structure of existence itself. This is a philosophical question — more precisely, a categorial question — and it cannot be reached, much less answered, by a psychological or biological inquiry.

Es liegt nahe, die Dinge in der Tat so zu fassen. bei näherem Zusehen zeigt sich aber, daß wir vielleicht den Tieren und Pflanzen diese Struktur zusprechen müssen, daß das aber nur möglich ist, sofern wir diese Struktur Selbst an unserem eigenen Dasein als solchem verstanden haben.

Die biologische Basis, d. h. diese Grundstruktur für das Seiende, das wir im engeren Sinne das biologische nennen, ist nur so zu gewinnen, daß im vorhinein schon diese Struktur als Daseinsstruktur verstanden ist; Nicht umgekehrt können wir aus der Biologie etwa diese Bestimmung entlehnen, sondern sie muß philosophisch gewonnen Werden; d. h. auch die Biologie selbst steht nicht in der Möglichkeit, diese Strukturen an ihren spezifischen Objekten zu sehen, solange sie Biologie bleibt, denn als Biologie setzt sie diese Strukturen überhaupt schon voraus, wenn sie Tier und Pflanze sagt. Die Biologie kann diese Strukturen nur insofern fixieren und bestimmen, als sie selbst ihre eigenen Grenzen überschreitet und Philosophie wird. Und so hat Man in der Tat im Verlauf der Entwicklung der neuzeitlichen Biologie, vor Allem im 19. Jahrhundert mehrfach, wenn auch in ganz allgemeinen Charakteristiken und ganz vagen Begriffen auf diese Struktur hingewiesen, daß die Tiere vor allem, in gewissem Sinne auch die Pflanzen eine Welt haben. Der erste, der meines Wissens auf diese Dinge wieder gestoßen ist – Aristoteles hat sie bereits gesehen – ist der Biologe K. E. v. Baer, der in seinen verschiedenen Vorträgen, nicht eigentlich thematisch, aber beiläufig auf diese Strukturen hingewiesen hat. Seine Anregungen hat neuerdings v. Uexküll aufgenommen, der dieses Problem nun thematisch behandelt hat, zwar nicht in einem (216) philosophischen Sinn, sondern im Zusammenhang spezifisch biologischer Untersuchungen.

Ich betone, daß mit dem Hinweis auf den Tatbestand dieser Struktur des Daseins Zunächst, philosophisch gesehen, nicht viel gewonnen ist, sondern daß es gerade darauf ankommt, diese Struktur nun in ihrem Seinssinn zu Verstehen. Als der regionale Horizont für die Biologie und für alle Psychologie, die sich neuerdings Anthropologie zu nennen beliebt, ist vorausgesetzt die philosophische Frage nach der Struktur des Daseins selbst, —eine philosophische Frage, die genauer gesprochen eine kategoriale Frage ist und durch eine psychologische oder biologische Fragestellung nicht nur nicht beantwortet, sondern überhaupt nicht erreicht wird.
