Vamos a tratar de mostrar que la intencionalidad es una estructura de las vivencias en cuanto tales y no algo que se añada a las vivencias —o estados psíquicos— para relacionarlas con otras realidades. Hay que advertir antes de nada que al tratar de poner en claro, esto es, de hacer ver y —viendo— aprehender lo que sea la intencionalidad, no se puede esperar que eso suceda de un golpe. Hemos de liberarnos del prejuicio de que, como la fenomenología exige que se capten las cosas mismas, las cosas deberían poder aprehenderse de un solo golpe, sin tener que hacer uno nada. Más bien, es largo y difícil el camino que penetra en las cosas mismas, y ante todo supone desmontar los prejuicios que impiden el acceso a ellas.

(48) intentio significa literalmente dirigir-se-a . Toda vivencia, toda actuación psíquica se refiere a algo. Representar es representar algo, recordar es recordar algo, juzgar es juzgar algo, suponer, esperar, confiar, amar, odiar —algo. Se dirá que eso es una trivialidad, y que subrayarlo expresamente no es ningún logro especial que merezca la calificación de descubrimiento. Sigamos, no obstante, un poco más adelante con esa trivialidad y tratemos de descubrir qué es lo que quiere decir para la fenomenología.

Las consideraciones siguientes no requieren especial agudeza de ingenio; basta con que se dejen de lado ciertos prejuicios, se aprenda a ver directa y simplemente  y a recordar lo visto sin entregarse a la curiosidad de preguntarse a qué viene todo esto. Frente a lo que se da más por supuesto, lo que más difícil nos puede resultar lograr es el atender a las cosas , puesto que el elemento de la existencia (Existenz) del hombre lo constituye lo artificial, lo falso, lo que los demás ya siempre  nos han llevado a creer. Es un error pensar que los fenomenólogos serían niños modelo a los que lo único que les caracteriza es la resolución para ponerse a luchar contra ello y la voluntad efectiva de indagar, y nada más.

Imaginémonos una «actuación psíquica», un caso ejemplar, sencillo de seguir: una percepción natural concreta —la percepción de una silla que nos encontramos al entrar en una habitación y que, como nos molesta, retiramos del paso. Insisto en esto último para dejar claro que se trata de una percepción de lo más cotidiana, y no de percepción en el sentido enfático de quedarnos mirando algo contemplativamente. La percepción natural, tal como vivo en ella mientras me muevo en mi mundo, la mayoría de las veces no es un quedarse contemplando y estudiando las cosas, sino que se diluye  en el trato práctico concreto con las cosas. No es algo autónomo, no percibo por percibir, sino para orientarme, para abrirme camino, para hacer algo. Se trata de una contemplación totalmente natural en la que de continuo vivo. Una interpretación un tanto burda describiría (49) la percepción de la silla del siguiente modo: en mi interior tiene lugar un determinado acontecimiento psíquico; este acontecer psíquico «interior», «en la conciencia», se corresponde «fuera» con una cosa física real. Surge, por lo tanto, una correspondencia entre la realidad de la conciencia (el sujeto) y cierta realidad de fuera de la conciencia (el objeto). El acontecer psíquico entra en relación con otra cosa que está fuera de él. En sí no es necesario que dicha relación se establezca de hecho, puesto que la percepción puede ser engañosa, o ser una alucinación. Es un hecho psicológico probado que se presentan a veces procesos psíquicos en los que se percibe —supuestamente— algo que ni siquiera existe. Puede suceder que mi acontecer psíquico se vea afectado por una alucinación, de tal manera que yo perciba, por ejemplo, cómo pasa ahora por encima de sus cabezas, atravesando el aula, un automóvil. En este caso no se corresponde el proceso psíquico del sujeto con ningún objeto real . Tenemos ahí una percepción en la que no se establece relación alguna con nada que esté fuera de ella. Es el caso también de las percepciones engañosas: voy por el bosque a oscuras y veo a un hombre que se acerca hacia mí; mirado más de cerca, es un árbol. También aquí, en esa percepción engañosa, falta el objeto que supuestamente se había percibido. Si tenemos en cuenta ese hecho indiscutible de que el objeto real puede justamente faltar en las percepciones, no podremos seguir diciendo que la percepción es siempre percepción de algo; es decir, la intencionalidad, dirigir-se-a algo no es una característica necesaria de toda percepción. Y aun cuando todo acontecer psíquico que yo denominara percepción se correspondiera con un objeto físico, no dejaría ésa de ser una afirmación dogmática, puesto que no está convenido de ninguna manera que yo alcance una realidad que esté más allá de mi conciencia.

Se sabe desde Descartes —y toda filosofía crítica se aferra a ello— que lo que yo verdaderamente aprehendo siempre son sólo «contenidos de conciencia». En el empleo del concepto de intencionalidad subyace, por lo tanto —en el caso, por ejemplo, de la percepción—, un doble presupuesto: por un lado, el presupuesto metafísico de que lo psíquico sale de sí mismo para llegar a lo físico, cosa que desde Descartes se sabe que está prohibida. En segundo lugar, subyace en la intencionalidad el presupuesto de que a todo proceso psíquico siempre corresponde un objeto real; los hechos probados de la percepción engañosa y de la alucinación hablan en su contra. Eso es lo que piensan Rickert y muchos otros cuando dicen que en (50) el concepto de intencionalidad se esconden dogmas metafísicos soterrados. Pero con esa interpretación de la percepción en cuanto alucinación o percepción engañosa, ¿hemos puesto verdaderamente a la vista la intencionalidad? ¿Hemos hablado de lo que la fenomenología quiere decir con ese rótulo? ¡Para nada! Y hasta tal punto que si tomáramos la recién citada interpretación como punto de partida para elucidar lo que sea la intencionalidad, nos resultaría imposible llegar a entender lo que fenomenológicamente quiere decir. Para aclarar cómo pueda ser esto vamos a repetir la interpretación observándola con mayor detenimiento. Pues esta presunta trivialidad no es para nada algo que se capte sin más; antes hay que dejar de lado la trivialidad perversa de las cuestiones ilegítimas, si bien habituales, de la teoría del conocimiento.

Imaginémonos la alucinación: diríamos que el automóvil realiter no existe en absoluto, que no hay, por lo tanto, correspondencia alguna entre lo físico y lo psíquico, sino sólo algo psíquico. Y, sin embargo, ¿no es la alucinación según su sentido alucinación, es decir, supuesta percepción de un automóvil? ¿No es, además, ese supuesto percibir, que se da sin relación real alguna con objeto real alguno, justamente en cuanto tal un dirigir-se-a un supuesto objeto de percepción? ¿No es el engaño, la ilusión en cuanto tal, un dirigir-se-a, aun cuando el objeto real no esté de hecho allí?

No se trata de que la percepción llegue a ser intencional sólo cuando algo físico entra en relación con algo psíquico, y que dejaría de ser intencional si eso real no existe, sino de que la percepción es en sí misma intencional, sea auténtica o engañosa. La intencionalidad no es una propiedad que se atribuya a la percepción y que en algunos casos le toque en suerte, sino que la percepción es de suyo intencional, con absoluta independencia de que lo percibido exista o no de hecho. Precisamente por eso, sólo por eso, porque la percepción en cuanto tal es un dirigir-se-a algo, porque la intencionalidad constituye la estructura de la propia actuación, es por lo que pueden darse cosas como la percepción engañosa o la alucinación.

Así, cuando se dejan de lado todos los prejuicios de la teoría del conocimiento, queda claro que la actuación misma —dejando aparte la cuestión de su validez o no validez—, por lo que hace a su estructura, es un dirigir-se-a. No se trata de que primero tenga lugar un proceso sólo psíquico, esto es, un estado no intencional (un complejo de sensaciones, relaciones de la memoria, una imagen representativa y procesos del pensamiento a través de los cuales se formaría una imagen, de la cual luego uno se pregunta si le corresponde algo o no), que posteriormente en algunos casos resultará ser intencional, sino de que el ser del propio actuar es un dirigir-se-a. (51) La intencionalidad no es una relación con lo no vivencial que se atribuya a las vivencias, una relación que en ocasiones les afecte, sino que las propias vivencias en cuanto tales son intencionales. Ésta es la primera característica, acaso todavía un tanto vacía, pero suficientemente importante como para servir de apoyo a la hora de evitar prejuicios metafísicos.

We will try to show that intentionality is a structure of lived experiences as such and Not a coordination relative to other realities, something added to the experiences taken as psychic states. It should first be noted that this attempt to make intentionality clear, to see it and in so doing to apprehend what it is, cannot hope to succeed in a single move. We must free ourselves from the prejudice that, because phenomenology calls upon us to apprehend the matters themselves, these matters must be apprehended all at once, without any preparation. Rather, the movement toward the matters themselves is a long and involved process which, before anything else, has to remove the prejudices which obscure them.

Intentio literally means directing-itself-toward. Every lived experience, every psychic comportment, directs itself toward something. Representing is a representing of something, recalling is a recalling of something, judging is judging about something, presuming, expecting, hoping, loving, hating—of something. But, one will object, this is a triviality hardly in need of explicit emphasis, certainly no special achievement meriting the designation of discovery. Notwithstanding, let us pursue this triviality a bit and bring out what it means phenomenologically.

The following considerations call for no special talent. They do demand that we set aside our prejudices, learn to see directly and simply and to abide by what we see without asking, out of curiosity, what we can do with it. In the face of the most obvious of matters, the very fact of the matter is the most difficult thing we may hope to attain, because Man’s element of existence is the artificial and mendacious, where he is always already cajoled by others. It is erroneous to think that phenomenologists are models of excellence who Stand out in their resolve to wage an all-out war with this element, in their positive will-to-disclose and nothing else.

Let us envisage an exemplary and readily available case of ‘psychic comportment’: a concrete and natural perception, the perception of a chair which I find upon entering a room and push aside, since it stands in my way. I stress the latter in order to indicate that we are after the most common kind of everyday perception and not a perception in the emphatic sense, in which we observe only for the sake of observing. Natural perception as I live in it in moving about my world is for the most part not a detached observation and scrutiny of things, but is rather absorbed in dealing with the matters at Hand concretely and practically. It is not self-contained; I do not perceive in order to perceive but in order to orient myself, to pave the way in dealing with something. This is a wholly natural way of looking in which I continually live.

A crude interpretation tends to depict the perception of the chair in this way: a specific psychic event occurs within me; to this psychic occurrence ‘inside,’ ‘in consciousness,’ there corresponds a physically real thing ‘outside.’ A coordination thus arises between the reality of consciousness (the subject) and a reality outside of consciousness (the object). The psychic event enters into a relationship with something else, outside of it. But in itself it is not necessary for this relationship to occur, since this perception can be an illusion, a hallucination. It is a psychological fact that psychic processes occur in which something is perceived—presumably—which does not even exist. It is possible for my psychic process to be beset by a hallucination such that I now perceive an automobile being driven through the room over your heads. In this case, no real object corresponds to the psychic process in the subject. Here we have a perceiving without the occurrence of a relationship to something outside of it. Or consider the case of a deceptive perception: I am walking in a dark forest and see a man coming toward me; but upon closer inspection it turns out to be a tree. Here also the object supposedly perceived in this deceptive perception is absent. In view of these indisputable facts which show that the real object can in fact be missing in perception, it can not be said that every perception is the perception of something. In other words, intentionality, directing itself toward something, is not a necessary mark of every perception. And even if some physical object should correspond to every psychic event which I call a perception, it would still be a dogmatic assertion; for it is by no means established that I ever get to a reality beyond my consciousness.

Since Descartes, everyone knows and every critical philosophy maintains that I actually only apprehend ‘contents of consciousness.’ Accordingly, the application of the concept of intentionality to the comportment of perception, for example, already implies a double presupposition. First, there is the metaphysical presupposition that the psychic comes out of itself toward something physical. With Descartes, as everyone knows, this became a forbidden presupposition. Second, there is in intentionality the presupposition that a real object always corresponds to a psychic process. The facts of deceptive perception and hallucination speak against this. This is what Rickert maintains and many others, when they say that the concept of intentionality harbors latent metaphysical dogmas. And yet, with this interpretation of perception as hallucination and deceptive perception, do we really have intentionality in our sights? Are we talking about what phenomenology means by this term? In no way! So little, in fact, that use of the interpretation just given as a basis for a discussion of intentionality would hopelessly block access to what the term really means phenomenologically. Let us therefore clear the air by going through the interpretation once again and regarding it more pointedly. For its ostensible triviality is not at all comprehensible without further effort. But first, the base triviality of spurious but common epistemological questions must be laid to rest.

Let us recall the hallucination. It will be said that the automobile here is in reality not present and on hand. Accordingly, there is no coordination between psychic and physical. Only the psychic is given. Nonetheless, is not the hallucination in its own right a hallucination, a presumed perception of an automobile? Is it not also the case that this presumed perception, which is without real relationship to a real object, precisely as such is a directing-itself-toward something presumably perceived? Is not the deception itself as such a directing-itself-toward, even if the real object is in fact not there?

It is not the case that a perception first becomes intentional by having something physical enter into relation with the psychic, and that it would no longer be intentional if this reality did not exist. It is rather the case that perception, correct or deceptive, is in itself intentional. Intentionality is not a property which would accrue to perception and belongs to it in certain instances. As perception, it is intrinsically intentional, regardless of whether the perceived is in reality on hand or not. Indeed, it is really only because perception as such is a directing-itself-toward something, because intentionality constitutes the very structure of comportment itself, that there can be anything like deceptive perception and hallucination.

When all epistemological assumptions are set aside, it becomes clear that comportment itself—as yet quite apart from the question of its correctness or incorrectness—is in its very structure a directing-itself-toward. It is not the case that at first only a psychic process occurs as a nonintentional state (complex of sensations, memory relations, mental image and thought processes through which an image is evoked, where one then asks whether something corresponds to it) and subsequently becomes intentional in certain instances. Rather, the very being of comporting is a directing-itself-toward. Intentionality is not a relationship to the non-experiential added to experiences, occasionally present along with them. Rather, the lived experiences themselves are as such intentional. This is our first specification, perhaps still quite empty, but already important enough to provide the footing for holding metaphysical prejudices at bay. (p. 29-32)

Wir Werden zu zeigen versuchen, daß die Intentionalität eine Struktur der Erlebnisse als solcher ist und Nicht eine an die Erlebnisse als seelische Zustände herangebrachte Zuordnung zu Anderen Wirklichkeiten. Vorausgeschickt sei: bei dem Versuche, die Intentionalität klar zu machen, d. h. zu sehen und in dem zu erfassen, Was sie ist, darf man nicht hoffen, daß das mit einem Schlage gelingt. Wir müssen uns von dem Vorurteil frei machen, daß dadurch, daß die Phänomenologie fordert, (37) die Sachen selbst zu erfassen, gesagt sei, die Sachen müßten mit einem Schlage, ohne Zutun erfaßt werden; vielmehr ist das Vordringen zu den Sachen ein umständliches, das vor Allem die Vorurteile, die die Sachen verbauen, abzutragen hat.

Intentio besagt dem Wortsinne nach: Sich-richten-auf. Jedes Erlebnis, jede seelische Verhaltung riditet sich auf etwas. vorstellen ist ein Vorstellen von etwas, Erinnerung ist Erinnerung von etwas, Urteilen ist Urteilen über etwas, Vermuten, Erwarten, Hoffen, Lieben, Hassen – von etwas. Man wird sagen, das ist eine Trivialität, sie ausdrücklich noch betonen, keine sonderliche Leistung, die gar die Bezeichnung einer Entdekkung verdiente. gehen wir jedoch dieser Trivialität etwas nach und stellen wir heraus, was sie phänomenologisch meint.

Bei den folgenden Betrachtungen wird kein besonderer Scharfsinn verlangt, sondern das Abstellen von Vorurteilen – schlichtes Sehen und Festhalten des Gesehenen, ohne die neugierige Frage, was damit anzufangen sei. Sachlichkeit dem Selbstverständlichsten gegenüber ist das Schwierigste, was uns gelingen mag, weil der Mensch das Element seiner Existenz im Gekünstelten, Verlogenen, immer schon von anderen Beschwatzten hat. Es ist ein Irrtum zu meinen, die Phänomenologen wären Musterknaben, nur die Entschlossenheit zum handanlegenden Kampf dagegen und das positive Erschließenwollen und sonst Nichts ist, was sie auszeichnet.

vergegenwärtigen wir uns einen exemplarischen, leichter zugänglichen Fall einer »seelischen Verhaltung«: eine konkrete natürliche Wahrnehmung – die Wahrnehmung von einem Stuhl, den Ich, ins Zimmer tretend, vorfinde und, weil er mir im Wege steht, wegschiebe. Ich betone das letztere, um anzudeuten, daß wir eine Wahrnehmung alltäglichster Art gewinnen Wollen, nicht ein Wahrnehmen im betonten Sinne des nur hinstarrenden Betrachtern. Die natürliche Wahrnehmung, Wie ich in ihr lebe, wenn ich mich in meiner Welt bewege, ist meist nicht ein eigenständiges Betrachten und Studieren der Dinge, sondern geht auf in einem konkreten praktischen Umgehen (38) mit den Sachen; sie ist nicht eigenständig, ich nehme nicht wahr, um wahrzunehmen, sondern um mich zu orientieren, den Weg zu bahnen, etwas zu bearbeiten; das ist eine ganz natürliche Betrachtung, in der ich ständig lebe. Eine grobe Interpretation wird die Wahrnehmung des Stuhles so charakterisieren: In meinem Innern läuft ein bestimmtes seelisches Geschehnis ab; diesem psychischen Geschehen »drinnen«, »im Bewußtsein«, entspricht »draußen« ein physisches reales Ding. Es entsteht also eine Zuordnung zwischen der Bewußtseinswirklichkeit (dem Subjekt) und einer Wirklichkeit außerhalb des Bewußtseins (dem Objekt). Das seelische Geschehen tritt in ein Verhältnis zu etwas anderem, außer ihm. an sich ist es nicht notwendig, daß dieses Verhältnis eintritt, denn diese Wahrnehmung kann eine Trugwahrnehmung, eine Halluzination Sein. Es ist eine psychologische Tatsache, daß psychische Vorgänge auftreten, durch die etwas wahrgenommen wird – vermeintlich erweise – , was gar nicht einmal existiert. Es ist möglich) daß mein psychisches Geschehen von einer Halluzination befallen wird, derart, daß ich wahrnehme, wie Jetzt ein Automobil durch den Saal über Ihre Köpfe wegfährt. Hier entspricht dem seelischen Vorgang im Subjekt kein reales Objekt; hier Haben wir ein Wahrnehmen, ohne daß ein Verhältnis zu etwas außer ihm einträte; oder bei einer Trug Wahrnehmung: Ich gehe im dunklen Wald und sehe einen Menschen auf mich zukommen, bei näherem Zusehen ist es ein Baum. Auch bier fehlt das Objekt, das vermeintlich in dieser Trug Wahrnehmung wahrgenommen wird. Angesichts dieser unbestreitbaren Tatsachen, daß das reale Objekt bei Wahrnehmungen gerade fehlen kann, wird man nicht sagen dürfen, jede Wahrnehmung sei Wahrnehmung von etwas; d. h. die Intentionalität, das Sich-richten-auf etwas ist kein notwendiges Merkmal jeder Wahrnehmung. Und Selbst wenn nun jedem psychischen Geschehen, das Ich als Wahrnehmung bezeichne, ein physisches Objekt entspräche, wäre das doch eine dogmatische Behauptung; (39) denn es ist ja gar nicht ausgemacht, daß ich über mein Bewußtsein zu einer Realität hinausgelange.

Seit Descartes weiß man – und jede kritische Philosophie hält daran fest – , daß ich eigentlich immer nur »Bewußtseinsinhalte« erfasse. In der Verwendung des Begriffes Intentionalität liegt demnach schon, z. B. bezüglich der Verhaltung der Wahrnehmung, eine doppelte Voraussetzung: einmal die metaphysische Voraussetzung, das Psychische komme aus sich heraus zu einem Physischen, was bekanntlich seit Descartes verboten ist. Zweitens liegt in der Intentionalität die Voraussetzung, daß immer einem psychischen Vorgang ein reales Objekt entspreche; die Tatsachen der Trugwahrnehmung und Halluzination Sprechen dagegen. Das meint Rickert und viele Andere, wenn sie sagen, im Begriff der Intentionalität stecken metaphysische Dogmen. Aber haben wir überhaupt mit dieser Interpretation der Wahrnehmung als Halluzination und Trugwahrnehmung die Intentionalität in den Blick bekommen? Haben wir von dem gesprochen, was die Phänomenologie mit diesem Titel meint? Nein! So wenig, daß diese eben gegebene Interpretation, wenn sie zur Grundlage einer Erörterung der Intentionalität Gemacht werden sollte, hoffnungslos den Zugang zu dem versperrt, was phänomenologisch gemeint ist. Machen wir uns das dadurch klar, daß wir die Interpretation wiederholen und schärfer sehen. Denn diese angebliche Trivialität ist gar nicht ohne weiteres faßbar, man muß zuerst die schlechte Trivialität unechten aber üblichen erkenntnistheoretischen Fragens beiseite lassen.

Vergegenwärtigen wir uns die Halluzination: Man wird sagen, das Automobil ist realiter gar nicht Vorhanden, es besteht also keine Zuordnung zwischen Physischem und Psychischem, sondern nur Psychisches ist gegeben. Aber ist die Halluzination nicht doch ihrem Sinne nach Halluzination, vermeintliche Wahrnehmung von einem Automobil? Ist nicht auch dieses vermeintliche Wahrnehmen, das ohne reales Verhältnis zu einem realen Objekt ist, gerade als solches ein Sich-richten-auf (40) ein vermeintlich Wahrgenommenes? Ist nicht die Täuschung selbst als solche ein Sich-richten-auf, auch wenn das reale Objekt faktisch nicht da ist?

Es ist Dicht so, daß eine Wahrnehmung erst dadurch intentional würde, daß ein Physisches zum Psychischen in Beziehung tritt und daß sie nicht mehr intentional wäre, wenn dieses Reale nicht existiert, sondern die Wahrnehmung in ihr selbst, ob rechte oder Trugwahrnehmung, ist intentional. Intentionalität ist nicht eine Eigenschaft, die der Wahrnehmung zugegeben würde und ihr in Gewissen Fällen zukommt, sondern sie ist als Wahrnehmung von Hause aus intentional, ganz abgesehen davon, ob das Wahrgenommene realiter vorhanden, ist oder nicht. Ja gerade nur deshalb, weil Wahrnehmung als solche ein Sich-richten-auf etwas ist, die Intentionalität die Struktur des Verhaltens selbst ausmacht, kann es so etwas wie Trugwahrnehmung und Halluzination geben.

So wird deutlich, wenn man alle erkenntnistheoretischen Vormeinungen beiseite laßt, daß die Verhaltung selbst – noch ganz frei von der Frage ihrer Rechtmäßigkeit und Unrechtmäßigkeit – ihrer Struktur nach Sich-richten-auf ist. Es ist nicht so, daß zuerst nur ein psychischer Vorgang als Zustand unintentional abläuft (Komplex von Empfindungen, Gedächtnisrelationen, Vorstellungsbild und Denkvorgänge, durch die ein Bild entsteht, von dem nachher gefragt wird, ob ihm etwas entspricht) und nachträglich im gewissen Falle intentional würde, sondern das Sein des Verhaltens selbst ist ein Sich-richten-auf. Intentionalität ist nicht ein den Erlebnissen zugetragenes, zuweilen an ihnen vorkommendes Verhältnis zu nicht Erlebnismäßigem, sondern die Erlebnisse selbst als solche sind intentionale. Das ist die erste, vielleicht noch ganz Leere Bestimmung, die aber schon wichtig genug ist, um Boden für das Fernhalten metaphysischer Vorurteile zu haben.
