Se trata, por lo tanto, de entender el Dasein en su manera de ser, y en principio justamente en un modo de ser que no sea distinguido, excepcional. No se trata de concebir el Dasein determinando cuáles hayan de ser sus metas y sus fines, ni en cuanto «homo» ni a la luz de idea alguna de «humanidad»; lo que hay que hacer, más bien, es poner al descubierto su manera de ser en la cotidianidad más inmediata, el Dasein fáctico en el cómo de su «serlo» fáctico. Eso no significa, sin embargo, que vayamos a narrar, como quien dice, biográficamente la vida cotidiana de un Dasein determinado en cuanto tal individuo, a dar cuenta de la vida concreta de un día corriente cualquiera. Lo que buscamos es la cotidianidad de la vida cotidiana, ese Faktum en su facticidad; no lo cotidiano del Dasein ocasional, sino la cotidianidad de la ocasionalidad de ser Dasein; eso es lo que nos interesa.

Esta tarea de captar y concebir el Dasein en su cotidianidad no supone describir el Dasein en un grado primitivo de su ser. Cotidianidad no es de ningún modo lo mismo que primitividad. La cotidianidad es, más bien, una manera de ser característica del Dasein, aun cuando  –  y sobre todo en ese caso  –  dicho Dasein disponga de una cultura diferenciada y bien desarrollada. Por otro lado, también el Dasein primitivo tiene a su manera posibilidades de ser excepcionales, no cotidianas o inhabituales; es decir, tiene también por su parte una manera específica de cotidianidad. No obstante, es cierto que a veces, prestando atención a los modos de existencia primitivos, se obtienen con mayor facilidad indicaciones que nos permiten ver y demostrar ciertos fenómenos de la existencia, al no ser en ese caso tan intenso el peligro de encubrirlos por medio de la teoría que de modo característico el propio Dasein, y no algo que se halle fuera de él, se agencia. Pero justamente ahí hace falta mantener una actitud especialmente crítica, pues lo que conocemos por existencia primitiva nos queda en principio bien lejano desde un punto de vista histórico, geográfico o de forma de ver el mundo, y es ajeno a nuestra cultura. Lo que se nos cuenta acerca de la «vida primitiva» ha pasado ya por una determinada interpretación, una interpretación, desde luego, que no puede haberse apoyado en una verdadero análisis fundamental del propio Dasein, sino que opera con las categorías de hombre y de relaciones humanas de alguna psicología determinada, sea la que sea. El análisis fundamental del Dasein es el único presupuesto correcto para poder entender lo primitivo; y no se puede pretender lo contrario, esto es, llegar a refundir en algún modo, ensamblando informaciones provenientes de la existencia primitiva, el sentido de ese ente que es el Dasein. Advertimos esto expresamente porque en algunas ocasiones, unas pocas, ilustraremos determinados fenómenos recurriendo a la existencia primitiva. Esas ilustraciones están, por supuesto, sujetas a esta advertencia crítica: no son más que ilustraciones, ejemplos; los contenidos y las estructuras que vayamos escogiendo los extraemos de las cosas y de la representación que nos hacemos del propio ente que nosotros somos.

Hay que establecer el carácter fundamental de ese ente que es «siéndolo siempre» el mío, yo . En lo que sigue se empleará para ello una expresión abreviada: el tema es el Dasein en su manera de ser  –  el ser del Dasein  –  , la constitución del ser del Dasein. De modo abreviado diremos la constitución del Dasein y con ello estaremos pensando siempre: en su manera de ser.

El Dasein en su cotidianidad, un fenómeno extraordinariamente complicado, lo contempla, lo caracteriza tanto más verdaderamente cuanto más diferenciada sea una vida. El que analicemos el Dasein por lo que hace a su cotidianidad y a su ser en la cotidianidad no quiere decir que pretendamos deducir las restantes posibilidades de ser del Dasein a partir de la cotidianidad, poner en práctica una especie de consideración genética, en el sentido de que se pudieran deducir todas las demás posibilidades de ser del Dasein a partir de la cotidianidad. La cotidianidad justamente persiste todos y cada uno de los días en todo momento y lugar. Todos somos testigos de cómo el Dasein tiene que ser y cómo es en la cotidianidad, aun cuando lo sea de diferentes maneras. Es fácil de suponer que la cotidianidad es un concepto específico de tiempo. [GA20JA:194-195]

Moreover, the Dasein is to be understood in its way to be, to begin with, Not in a kind of being which is somehow emphatic and exceptional. The Dasein is not to be taken by setting some sort of aim and purpose for it, neither as ‘homo’ nor even in the light of some idea of ‘humanity.’ Instead, its way to be must be brought out in its nearest everydayness, the factic Dasein in the how of its factic ‘to-be-it.’ But this does not mean that we now give a kind of biographical account of a particular Dasein as this individual Dasein in its everyday life. We are reporting no particular everyday life but we are seeking the everydayness of everyday life, the fact in its facticity, not the everyday of the temporally particular Dasein but to be the everydayness for its particular while as Dasein is what matters to us.

This task of conceiving Dasein in its everydayness does not mean describing the Dasein at a primitive stage of its being. Everydayness is in no way identical with primitiveness. Everydayness is rather a distinctive how of the being of Dasein, even when and precisely when this Dasein has an inherently highly developed and differentiated culture at its disposal. On the other Hand, even primitive Dasein in its way has possibilities of exceptional, non-everyday, and unusual being, which means that it also has in its turn a specific way of everydayness. But often the consideration of primitive forms of Dasein can more readily provide directions in seeing and verifying certain phenomena of Dasein, inasmuch as here the danger of concealment through theory, which Dasein itself characteristically supplies rather than something else outside of Dasein, is not yet so powerful. But it is just here that an especially critical attitude is needed, for what we know from primitive stages of Dasein is at first purely historically, geographically, and in world view furthest from us and alien to our culture. What is thus imparted to us about ‘primitive life’ is already pervaded by a particular interpretation. Indeed, it is an interpretation which cannot be based on an actual fundamental analysis of Dasein itself but which works with categories of Man and human relationships taken from some sort of psychology. The fundamental analysis of Dasein is just the right presupposition for an understanding of the primitive, and not the reverse: there is no reason to believe that the sense of this entity can in some way be assembled by putting together bits of information about primitive Dasein. This point is being made because of the fact that we shall on occasion, but only sparingly, resort to primitive Dasein to exemplify certain phenomena. The exemplification must of course remain subject to this critical consideration, it is no more than an exemplification. The contents and the structures being evoked here are drawn from the matters and from envisaging the entity itself which we are.

The fundamental character of this entity, that it is in my ‘to be it in each particular instance,’ must be maintained. In what follows, an abbreviated form of expression will be used for it. The theme is the Dasein in its way to be  –  the being of Dasein  –  the constitution of the being of Dasein. By way of abbreviation, we shall speak of the constitution of Dasein and always mean by it “in its way to be.”

Dasein in its everydayness, a highly complicated phenomenon, regards and defines it more authentically when a life is more differentiated. When we analyze Dasein in its everydayness and its being in everydayness, this should not be construed as saying also that we want to derive the remaining possibilities of the being of Dasein from everydayness, that we want to carry out a genetic consideration on the assumption that every other possibility of the being of Dasein could be derived from everydayness. Everydayness persists everywhere and always every day; each is a witness as to how Dasein has to be and how it is in everydayness, even though in a different way. It is easy to foresee that everydayness is a specific concept of time. [GA20TK:154-156]
