Como chegamos a esta separação, esta dicotomia entre o sujeito e o objeto? Como um surge em relação ao outro? Esta questão pressupõe um estágio anterior, quando a dicotomia ainda não havia ocorrido. Este estágio inicial, para Hegel, é o mundo grego.

Qual é de fato a força motriz da dicotomia [[lx>termos:s:sujeito-objeto|sujeito-objeto]]? É a busca pela certeza absoluta. Tal busca, que nasce de uma interpretação da verdade como certeza, aparece historicamente com a primeira Meditação de Descartes. Com Descartes, o homem como ego cogito torna-se o distintivo ὑποκείμενον ([[f>h:hypokeimenon|hypokeimenon]]), o subjectum (no sentido medieval) - o fundum inconcussum. Doravante, a natureza só aparece como objeto de sujeito.

Como um prelúdio histórico a este advento, pode-se notar que a busca pela certeza aparece primeiro no domínio da fé, como a busca da certeza da salvação (Lutero), depois no domínio da física como a busca pela certeza matemática de natureza (Galileu) - uma pesquisa há muito preparada pela separação nominalista de palavras e coisas no campo da linguagem (William de Ockham). Ao evacuar o conceito de realidade, o formalismo de Ockham torna possível o projeto de uma chave matemática para o mundo.

Daí a pergunta: É possível apreender em um conceito, com uma necessidade imperiosa, a unidade da certeza matemática e a certeza da salvação?

Heidegger responde que é a garantia (domínio, disponibilidade, segurança) que se busca cada vez que aproxima estas duas questões aparentemente independentes. Na busca da certeza matemática, o que se busca é a segurança do homem na natureza, no sensível; na busca da certeza da salvação, o que se busca é a certeza do homem no mundo supra-sensível.

A origem da dicotomia é, portanto, a mutação da verdade em certeza, a que corresponde a prioridade dada à entidade homem no sentido de ego cogito, sua ascensão à posição de sujeito. Doravante, a natureza torna-se objeto (ob-jectum), sendo o objeto nada mais do que “o que é lançado contra mim” (das mir Entgegengeworfene). Assim que o ego se torna o Sujeito absoluto, todos os outros seres se tornam objetos para ele, por exemplo, na forma de percepção (este é o ponto de partida para o “Objeto” no sentido kantiano). O decisivo é que a distinção sujeito-objeto atua inteiramente na dimensão da subjetividade. Esta dimensão é caracterizada por Hegel por meio da expressão consciência. “Consciência” é a esfera da subjetividade. Consciência, isto é, “ver tudo junto”, co-agere. Todos os termos essenciais de Hegel no texto em questão se referem à consciência.

Os parágrafos dedicados a Descartes em Ser e tempo representam a primeira tentativa de sair da prisão da consciência, ou melhor, de não mais entrar nela. Não se trata de maneira alguma de restaurar o realismo contra o idealismo, pois o realismo, limitando-se à garantia de que existe um mundo para o sujeito, permanece dependente do cartesianismo. É antes uma questão de tentar pensar o sentido grego de ἐγώ ([[f>e:ego|ego]]).

How do we get to this separation, this dichotomy between the subject and the object? How does one emerge in relation to the other? This question presupposes an earlier stage when the dichotomy had Not yet occurred. This earlier stage, for Hegel, is the Greek world.

What is in fact the driving force of the subject-object dichotomy? It is the quest for absolute certainty. Such a quest, which is born out of an interpretation of truth as certainty, appears historically with Descartes’ first Meditation. With Descartes, Man as ego cogito becomes the distinctive ὑποκείμενον, the subjectum (in the medieval sense)  –  the fundamentum inconcussum. Henceforth, nature only appears as an Object for a Subject.

As a historical prelude to this advent, one can note that the quest for certainty appears first in the domain of faith, as the search for the certainty of salvation (Luther), then in the domain of physics as the search for the mathematical certainty of nature (Galileo)  –  a search long prepared by the nominalist separation of words and things in the field of language (William of Ockham). By evacuating the concept of reality, Ockham’s formalism renders possible the project of a mathematical key to the world.

Hence the question: Is it possible to grasp in one concept, with a compelling necessity, the unity of mathematical certainty and the certainty of salvation?

Heidegger answers that it is the assurance (mastery, availability, security) each time sought that brings together these two apparently independent matters. In the quest for mathematical certainty, what is sought is the assurance of man in nature, in the sensible; in the quest for the certainty of salvation, what is sought is the assurance of man in the supra-sensible world.

The origin of the dichotomy is thus the mutation of truth into certainty, to which corresponds the priority given to the entity man in the sense of the ego cogito, its rise to the position of subject. Henceforth, nature becomes object (ob-jectum), the object being nothing other than “what is thrown over against me” (das mir Entgegengeworfene). As soon as the ego becomes the absolute Subject, all other beings become objects for it, for example, in the form of perception (this is the point of departure for the “Object” in the Kantian sense). What is decisive is that the subject-object distinction plays entirely in the Dimension of subjectivity. This dimension is characterized by Hegel through the expression consciousness. “Consciousness” is the sphere of subjectivity. Consciousness, that is, “seeing everything together,” co-agere. All of Hegel’s essential terms in the text in question relate to consciousness.

The paragraphs devoted to Descartes in Being and Time represent the first attempt to exit the prison of consciousness, or rather to no longer enter it. It is in no way a question of restoring realism against idealism, for realism, by limiting itself to the assurance that a world exists for the subject, remains dependent upon Cartesianism. It is rather a question of attempting to think the Greek sense of the ἐγώ.

Wie kommt es zu dieser Trennung, zu dieser Entzweiung von Subjekt und Objekt? Wie vollzieht das Eine seinen Durchbruch in Bezug auf das Andere? Diese Frage setzt schon eine frühere Stufe voraus, auf der die Entzweiung noch Nicht Geschehen war. Diese frühere Stufe ist für Hegel die griechische Welt.

Was ist also die treibende Kraft der Subjekt-Objekt-Ent-zweiung? Es ist die Suche nach der absoluten Gewißheit. Diese Suche, die einer Auslegung der Wahrheit als Gewißheit entspringt, tritt historisch mit der ersten »Meditation« von Descartes auf. Mit Descartes wird der Mensch als ego cogito das ausgezeichnete ὑποκείμενον, das subjectum (im mittelalterlichen Sinne),  –  das fundamentum inconcussum. Damit ineins erscheint die Natur für dies Subjekt nur mehr als Objekt.

Als historisches Vorspiel zu diesem Umbruch läßt sich dartun, daß die Suche nach der Gewißheit zuerst im Bereiche des Glaubens auf tritt, als Suche nach der Heilsgewißheit (Luther), dann in dem der Physik, als Suche nach der mathematischen Gewißheit der Natur (Galilei),  –  eine Suche, auf dem Gebiet der Sprache von weither vorbereitet durch die nominalistische Scheidung der Worte und der Dinge (293) (Wilheim von Occam). Occams Formalismus Macht durch seine Entleerung des Realitätsbegriffs den Entwurf eines mathematischen Schlüssels der Welt möglich.

Daraus ergibt sich die Frage: ist es möglich, in einem Begriff, in einer zwingenden Notwendigkeit die Einheit der mathematischen Gewißheit und der Heilsgewißheit zu fassen?

Heidegger antwortet, daß es die jeweils gesuchte Sicherung (Beherrschbarkeit, verfügbarkeit, Gesichertheit) ist, die diese beiden offenkundig voneinander unabhängigen Sachen zusammenbringt. In der Suche nach der mathematischen Gewißheit ist es auf die Sicherung des Menschen in der Natur, im Sinnlichen abgesehen; in der Suche nach der Heilsgewißheit auf die Sicherung des Menschen in der übersinnlichen Welt.

Der Ursprung der Entzweiung ist somit der Wandel der Wahrheit zur Gewißheit, welchem der dem Seienden Mensch im Sinne des ego cogito gegebene Vorrang entspricht, Sein Auftreten in der Stellung des Subjekts. Seitdem wird die Natur zum Objekt (ob-jectum), da das Objekt Nichts anderes als »das mir Entgegengeworfene« ist. Sobald das Ego zum absoluten Subjekt wird, wird alles andere Seiende ihm zum Objekt, z. B. in der Weise der Wahrnehmung (das ist der Ausgangspunkt für den »Gegenstand« im Sinne Kants). Entscheidend ist, daß die Unterscheidung Subjekt-Objekt vollkommen in der Dimension der Subjektivität spielt. Diese Dimension ist bei Hegel durch den Ausdruck Bewußtsein gekennzeichnet. Das Bewußtsein ist die Sphäre der Subjektivität; Bewußtsein nämlich als »alles Zusammensehen«, co-agere. In dem befragten Text stehen alle wesentlichen Begriffe Hegels in Beziehung zum Bewußtsein.

DieDescartes gewidmeten Paragraphen von »Sein und Zeit« stellen den ersten Versuch dar, aus dem Gefängnis des Bewußtseins herauszukommen oder vielmehr, nicht mehr dorthinein zurückzukehren. Es geht keineswegs darum, den (294) Realismus gegen den Idealismus wiederherzustellen, denn indem der Realismus sich auf die Versicherung beschränkt, daß eine Welt für das Subjekt Vorhanden ist, bleibt er dem Cartesianismus verpflichtet. Es kommt vielmehr darauf an, daß der griecfiische Sinn des ἐγώ gedacht Werden kann. (p. 292-294)
