Todo o ente é no ser. Ouvir tal coisa soa de modo trivial em nosso ouvido, quando não de modo ofensivo. Pois, pelo fato de o ente ter seu lugar no ser, ninguém precisa preocupar-se. Todo mundo sabe: ente é aquilo que é. Qual a outra solução para o ente a não ser esta: ser? E entretanto: precisamente isto, que o ente permaneça recolhido no ser, que no fenômeno do ser se manifesta o ente; isto jogava os gregos, e a eles primeiro unicamente, no espanto. Ente no ser: isto se tornou para os gregos o mais espantoso.

Entretanto, mesmo os gregos tiveram que salvar e proteger o poder de espanto deste mais espantoso — contra o ataque do entendimento sofista, que dispunha logo de uma explicação, compreensível para qualquer um, para tudo e a difundia. A salvação do mais espantoso — ente no ser — se deu pelo fato de que alguns se fizeram a caminho na sua direção, quer dizer, do [[f>s:sophon|sophon]]. Estes tornaram-se por isto aqueles que tendiam para o sophon e que através de sua própria aspiração despertavam nos outros homens o anseio pelo sophon e o mantinham aceso. O philein tà sophon, aquele acordo com o sophon de que falamos acima, a harmonia, transformou-se em orexis, num aspirar pelo sophon. O sophon — o ente no ser — é agora propriamente procurado. Pelo fato de o philein não ser mais um acordo originário com o sophon, mas um singular aspirar pelo sophon, o philein to sophon torna-se "philosophia". Esta aspiração é determinada pelo Eros.

Uma tal procura que aspira pelo sophon, pelo hen panta, pelo ente no ser, se articula agora numa questão: que é o ente, enquanto é? Somente agora o pensamento torna-se "filosofia". Heráclito e Parmênides ainda não eram "filósofos". Por que não? Porque eram os maiores pensadores. "Maiores" não designa aqui o cálculo de um rendimento, porém aponta para uma outra dimensão do pensamento. Heráclito e Parmênides eram "maiores" no sentido de que ainda se situavam no acordo com o Logos, quer dizer, com o Hen Panta. O passo para a "filosofia", preparado pela sofística, só foi realizado por Sócrates e Platão. Aristóteles então, quase dois séculos depois de Heráclito, caracterizou este passo com a seguinte afirmação: Kai de kai ta palai te kai nyn kai aei zetoumenon kai aei aporoumenon, ti to on? (Metafísica, VI, 1, 1028 b 2 ss.). Na tradução isso soa: "Assim, pois, é aquilo para o qual (a filosofia) está em marcha já desde os primórdios, e também agora e para sempre e para o qual sempre de novo não encontra acesso (e que é por isso questionado): que é o ente? (ti to on)".

A filosofia procura o que é o ente enquanto é. A filosofia está a caminho do ser do ente, quer dizer, a caminho do ente sob o ponto de vista do ser. Aristóteles elucida isto, acrescentando uma explicação ao ti to on, que é o ente?, na passagem acima citada: tou to esti tis he ousia? Traduzido: "Isto (a saber, ti to on) significa: que é a entidade do ente?" O ser do ente consiste na entidade. Esta, porém — a [[f>o:ousia|ousia]] — , é determinada por Platão como ideia, por Aristóteles como [[f>e:energeia|energeia]]. (1999, p. 32-33)

Tout l’étant est en l’être. Voilà qui résonne à notre oreille d’une manière triviale, sinon offensante. Car de cela que l’étant a son appartenance dans l’être, nul n’a besoin d’avoir cure. Tout le monde le sait bien : étant est ce qui est. Quelle autre issue y a-t-il pour l’étant que celle-ci : être? et pourtant : (328) justement ceci que l’étant demeure recueilli en l’être, que l’étant apparaît dans la lumière de l’être, voilà ce qui plaça les Grecs, et eux d’abord, et eux seuls, dans la Dimension de l’étonnement. L’étant (recueilli) dans l’être, voilà ce qui devint, pour les Grecs, le plus étonnant.

Cependant même les Grecs durent sauver et préserver en quoi est source d’étonnement ce qu’il y a de plus étonnant — contre l’attaque de l’entendement sophistique qui avait pour tout une explication que tout un chacun pouvait immédiatement comprendre et qui l’apportait au marché. La sauvegarde du plus étonnant, l’étant (recueilli) dans l’être — advint grâce à quelques-uns qui prirent le chemin conduisant en direction de ce qu’il y a de plus étonnant, c’est-à-dire le σοφόν. Ils devinrent ainsi ceux qui étaient tendus vers le σοφόν et qui, par leur propre quête, réveillèrent et maintinrent éveillée chez d’autres la nostalgie du σοφόν. Le φιλεῖν τὸ σοφόν, cet accord avec le σοφόν précédemment nommé, l’ἁρμονία, devint ainsi une ὄρεξις, devint une tension vers le σοφόν. Le σοφόν — l’étant (recueilli) dans l’être — est maintenant expressément cherché. Parce que le φιλεῖν n’est plus un accord originel avec le σοφόν, mais une recherche spécifique tendue vers le σοφόν, le φιλεῖν τὸ σοφόν devient « φιλοσοφία ». Cette tension inquisitive est déterminée par l’Éros.

Une telle recherche qui se tend vers le σοφόν, vers l’Ἕν Πάντα, vers l’étant dans l’être, devient maintenant la question suivante ; qu’est-ce que l’étant en tant qu’il est? C’est seulement à ce moment que la pensée en vient à être « philosophie ». Héraclite et Parménide n’étaient pas encore des « philosophes ». Et pourquoi non? Parce qu’ils étaient les plus grands penseurs. « Plus grands » (329) ne signifie pas ici l’estimation d’un exploit, mais fait signe vers une tout autre dimension de la pensée. Héraclite et Parménide étaient « plus grands » au sens où ils étaient encore à l’unisson du Λόγος, c’est-à-dire de Ἕ Πάντα. Le pas vers la « philosophie », préparé par la Sophistique, ne fut accompli que par Socrate et Platon.

C’est presque deux cents ans après Héraclite qu’Aristote a caractérisé ce pas dans la phrase suivante : (...); (Met., Ζ I, 1028 b2 sqq.). Traduit, cela nous dit : « Ainsi ce vers quoi (la philosophie) s’est mise en marche déjà depuis longtemps, maintenant et sans cesse, et vers quoi elle n’a jamais trouvé accès (est ce qui est ainsi mis en question) : qu’est-ce que l’étant? (τί τὸ ὄν). »

La philosophie recherche ce qu’est l’étant en tant qu’il est. La philosophie est en route vers l’être de l’étant, c’est-à-dire vers l’étant visé dans son être. Aristote explicite cela en faisant succéder à la phrase citée τί τὸ ὄν, qu’est-ce que l’étant? — l’éclaircissement suivant : (...); traduisons en disant : « ceci (c’est-à-dire τί τὸ ὄν) signifie : qu’est-ce que l’étantité (Seiendheit) de l’étant? » L’être de l’étant repose dans l’étantité. Mais celle-là — l’οὐσία — Platon la détermine comme ἰδέα, Aristote comme étant l’ἐνέργεια. (p. 327-329)

All being is in Being. To hear such a thing sounds trivial to our ear, if Not, indeed, offensive, for no one needs to bother about the fact that being belongs in Being. All the world knows that being is that which is. What else remains for being but to be? And yet, just this fact that being is gathered together in Being, that in the appearance of Being being appears, that astonished the Creeks and first astonished them and them alone. Being  in Being — that became the most astonishing thing for the Greeks. (49)

However, even the Greeks had to rescue and protect the astonishingness of this most astonishing thing against the attack of Sophist reasoning which always had ready for everything an answer which Was comprehensible to everyone and which they put on the market. The rescue of the most astonishing thing —  being in Being — was accomplished by a few who started off in the direction of this most astonishing thing, that is, the sophon. By doing this they became those who strove for the sophon and who through their own striving awakened and kept alive among others the yearning for the sophon. The loving the sophon, that already mentioned harmony with the sophon, the harmonia, thus became an orexis (yearning), a striving for the sophon. The sophon — the being in Being — is now especially sought. Because the loving is no longer an original harmony with the sophon but is a particular striving towards the sophon, the loving of the sophon becomes “philosophia.” The striving is determined by Eros.

This yearning search for the sophon, for the “One (51) (is) all,” for the being in Being, now becomes the question, “What is being, in so far as it is?” Only now does thinking become “philosophy.” Heraclitus and Parmenides were not yet “philosophers." Why not? Because they were the greater thinkers. “Greater” here does not signify the estimation of an achievement but indicates another dimension of thinking. Heraclitus and Parmenidies were “greater” in the sense that they were still in harmony with the Logos, that is, with the “One (is) all.” The step into “philosophy,” prepared for by Sophism, was first accomplished by Socrates and Plato. Then, almost two centuries after Heraclitus, Aristotle characterized this step by the following statement: “And, moreover, that which is sought both of old and now and forever and forever missed is, what is being.” (Met. Z 1, 1028 b 2 sqq). In translation this reads: “And thus, as was in the past, is now too and will be ever more, that towards which (philosophy) is moving and to which it again and again does not find access, is (the question raised) —  what is being? (ti to on).” (53)

Philosophy seeks what being is, in so far as it is. Philosophy is en route to the Being of being, that is, to being with respect to Being. Aristotle explains this by adding in the cited statement to the question, What is being? the explanation: ‘This is what Beingness is”; in translation: “This (namely, ti to on) means, what is the Beingness of being?” The Being of being rests in the Beingness. But this — the ousia (Beingness) — Plato calls idea and Aristotle the energeia (actuality). (p. 49-54)

Alles Seiende ist im Sein. Solches zu Hören, klingt für unser Ohr trivial, wenn Nicht gar beleidigend. Denn darum, daß das Seiende in das Sein gehört, braucht sich Niemand zu kümmern. Alle Welt weiß: Seiendes ist solches, was ist. Was steht dem Seienden anderes frei als dies: zu sein? Und dennoch: gerade dies, daß das Seiende im Sein versammelt bleibt, daß im scheinen von Sein das Seiende erscheint, dies setzte die Griechen, und sie zuerst und sie allein, in das Erstaunen. Seiendes im Sein: dies wurde für die Griechen das Erstaunlichste.

(15) Indessen mußten sogar die Griechen die Erstaunlichkeit dieses Erstaunlichsten retten und schützen — gegen den Zugriff des sophistischen Verstandes, der für alles eine für Jedermann sogleich verständliche Erklärung bereit hatte und sie auf den Markt brachte. Die Rettung des Erstaunlichsten — Seiendes im Sein — geschah dadurch, daß sich einige auf den Weg Machten in der Richtung auf dieses Erstaunlichste, d.h. das σοφόν. Sie wurden dadurch zu solchen, die nach dem σοφόν strebten und durch ihr eigenes Streben bei Anderen Menschen die Sehnsucht nach dem σοφόν erweckten und wachhielten. Das φιλεῖν τό σοφόν, jener schon genannte Einklang mit dem σοφόν, die ἁρμονία, wurde so zu einer ορεξις, zu einem Streben nach dem σοφόν. Das σοφόν — das Seiende im Sein — wird Jetzt eigens gesucht. Weil das φιλεΐν nicht mehr ein ursprünglicher Einklang mit dem σοφόν ist, sondern ein besonderes Streben nach dem σοφόν, wird das φιλεῖν τό σοφόν zur »φιλοσοφία«. Deren Streben wird durch den Eros bestimmt.

Dieses strebende Suchen nach dem σοφόν, nach dem Έν Πάντα, nach dem Seienden im Sein wird jetzt zur Frage: Was ist das Seiende, insofern es ist? Das denken wird jetzt erst zur »Philosophie«. Heraklit und Parmenides waren noch keine »Philosophen«. Warum nicht? Weil sie die größeren Denker waren. »Größer« meint Hier nicht das Verrechnen einer Leistung, sondern zeigt in eine Andere Dimension des Denkens. Heraklit und Parmenides waren »größer« in dem Sinne, daß sie noch im Einklang standen mit dem Λόγος, d. h. dem "Εν Πάντα. Der Schritt zur »Philosophie«, vorbereitet durch die Sophistik, wurde zuerst von Sokrates und Platon vollzogen. Aristoteles hat dann fast zwei Jahrhunderte nach Heraklit diesen Schritt durch folgenden Satz gekennzeichnet: (...); (Met. Ζ 1,1028 b 2 sqq). In der Übersetzung sagt dies: »Und so ist denn einstmals schon und auch jetzt und immerfort dasjenige, Wohin (die Philosophie) sich auf den Weg begibt und wohin sie immer wieder den Zugang nicht findet (das Gefragte dieses): Was ist das Seiende? (τί τό οv).«

Die Philosophie sucht das, was das Seiende ist, insofern es ist. (16) Die Philosophie ist unterwegs zum Sein des Seienden, d. h. zum Seienden hinsichtlich des Seins. Aristoteles erläutert dies, indem er in dem angeführten Satz auf das τί τό οv, was ist das Seiende? eine Erläuterung folgen läßt: (...); in der Übersetzung gesprochen: »Dies (nämlich τί τό οv) bedeutet: was ist die Seiendheit des Seienden?« Das Sein des Seienden beruht in der Seiendheit. Diese aber — die οὐσία — bestimmt Platon als ιδέα, bestimmt Aristoteles als die ενέργεια. (p. 14-16)
