Este caminho para a resposta à nossa questão (o que é isto - a filosofia?) não representa uma ruptura com a história, nem uma negação da história, mas uma apropriação e transformação do que foi transmitido. Uma tal apropriação da história é designada com a expressão "destruição". O sentido desta palavra é claramente determinado em Ser e tempo (§ 6). Destruição não significa ruína, mas desmontar, demolir e pôr-de-lado — a saber, as afirmações puramente históricas sobre a história da filosofia. Destruição significa: abrir nosso ouvido, torna-lo livre para aquilo que na tradição do ser do ente nos inspira. C'est une telle appropriation de l'histoire qui est en vue dans le mot « destruction ». Dans Sein and Zeit (§ 6) le sens de ce mot est clairement circonserit. Destruction ne signifie pas anéantissement, mais démantèlement, déblaiement et mise à l'écart   des énoncés purement historisants sur l'histoire de la philosophie. Détruire signifie ouvrir notre oreille, la rendre libre pour ce qui, dans la tradition qui délivre, nous est intenté comme être de l'étant. C'est en oyant un tel appel que nous parvenons à la correspondance.

Dieser Weg zur Antwort auf unsere Frage ist kein Bruch mit der Geschichte, keine Verleugnung der Geschichte, sondern eine Aneignung und Verwandlung des Überlieferten. Solche Aneignung der Geschichte ist mit dem Titel »Destruktion« gemeint. Der Sinn dieses Wortes ist in »Sein und Zeit« klar umschrieben (§ 6). Destruktion bedeutet Nicht Zerstören, sondern abbauen, Abtragen und Auf-die-Seite-stellen — nämlich die nur historischen Aussagen über die Geschichte der Philosophie. Destruktion heißt: unser Ohr Öffnen, freimachen für das, Was sich uns in der Überlieferung als Sein des Seienden zuspricht. Indem Wir auf diesen Zuspruch Hören, gelangen wir in die Entsprechung.
