Esse avanço antecipativo para a possibilidade mais extrema de mim mesmo, que ainda não sou, mas será, significa ser futural. Eu próprio sou meu futuro em virtude desta avançar antecipativo. Não estou no futuro, mas sou eu mesmo futural. Ser culpado nada mais é do que carregar o passado consigo mesmo, pois ser culpado é uma espécie de passado. Neste estado de culpa, podemos ver como alguém se apega ao passado e como junto com isto esse Dasein humano, através de suas ações, entra autenticamente no presente. Em sendo resolvido, o Dasein é o seu futuro, em sendo culpado, é o seu passado, e em agindo, ele entra no presente. O aí-sendo do Dasein nada mais é do que tempo-sendo. O tempo não é algo que encontro lá fora no mundo, mas é o que eu mim-mesmo sou. Ao avançar antecipativamente, sendo culpado e agindo, o tempo ele mesmo é aí para nós. O tempo caracteriza o todo do Dasein. A qualquer momento em particular, o Dasein não está apenas no momento, mas ao invés é ele mesmo dentro de toda a extensão de suas possibilidades e de seu passado. É notável como, em agindo na direção do futuro, o passado ganha vida e o presente desaparece. Aqueles que agem autenticamente vivem desde o futuro e também podem viver desde o passado; o presente se cuida de si mesmo. O tempo constitui todo o meu Dasein e também define meu próprio sendo a cada momento. A vida humana não acontece no tempo, mas ao invés é o tempo ele mesmo. Isso ficará mais claro se pudermos mostrar que, mesmo em sua maneira cotidiana de ser, o Dasein é caracterizado pelo tempo.

Como é o tempo para nós na vida cotidiana? É obviamente aí para mim quando decido ou determino algo a seu respeito, quando olho para o relógio e digo “agora. O que está acontecendo neste agora? Que é este tempo que é certificado quando o Dasein é organizado em termos de horários, dias, semanas e anos? Nesses meios de se orientar a si mesmo, já é possível ver que toda a vida é definida de maneira peculiar pelo tempo. Estas formas de organizar o tempo são caracterizadas pela preocupação. Preocupação significa trazer o que foi colocado sob os cuidados de alguém para dentro do presente; por uma certa maneira de gerenciá-lo, disponibilizamos isso que ainda não está disponível. No cuidado jaz certa antecipação ou espera, ou seja, certa relação ao futuro. Espero algo do futuro que me afete; não é algo que eu sou, mas algo que eu tenho que lidar. Preocupar-se dessa maneira com o futuro é ao mesmo tempo esquecer. O que é da preocupação perde o caráter de ter se tornado o que é; é simplesmente aí para nós. Sua história é encoberta. Torna-se uma questão cotidiana. O contra-fenômeno para esta espera, portanto, não é memória mas esquecimento. A vida cotidiana sempre vive no presente, que fornece a medida com a qual o futuro é calculado e o passado esquecido. Essa tendência de permanecer no presente é o que trouxe o uso de relógios. Por que há relógios? Porque a vida cotidiana quer ter o curso do mundo disponível no "agora". Agora e então, e então e então. . . . Nada além de mais agoras que se desejam disponibilizar no reino de todos. Para tornar esses agora acessíveis universalmente, é necessário um relógio.

This anticipatory running forward into the most extreme possibility of myself, which I am not yet, but will be, means to be futural. I myself am my future by virtue of this anticipatory running forward. I am not in the future but rather am myself futural. Being guilty is nothing other than carrying the past around with oneself, for being guilty is a kind of being past. In this state of being guilty, we can see how one holds onto the past and how along with this human Dasein, through its actions, comes authentically into the present. In being resolved, Dasein is its future, in being guilty it is its past, and in acting it comes into the present. The being-there of Dasein is nothing other than being-time. Time is not something that I encounter out there in the world, but is what I myself am. In running forward anticipatorily, being guilty, and acting, time itself is there for us. Time characterizes the whole of Dasein. At any particular time, Dasein is not only in the moment but rather is itself within the entire span of its possibilities and its past. It is remarkable how, in acting in the direction of the future, the past comes alive and the present vanishes. Those who act authentically live from out of the future and also can live from out of the past; the present takes care of itself. Time constitutes the whole of my Dasein and also defines my own being at every moment. Human life does not happen in time but rather is time itself. This will become clearer if we can show that even in its everyday manner of being, Dasein is characterized by time.

How is time there for us in everyday life? It is obviously there for me when I decide or determine something about it, when I look at the clock and say “now. ” What is going on in this now? What is that time which is ascertained when Dasein is arranged in terms of timetables, days, weeks, and years? In these means of orienting oneself, one can already see that all life is defined in a peculiar manner by time. These ways of arranging time are characterized by concern. Concern means to bring that which has been placed under ones care into the present; by a certain way of managing it, one makes available that which is not yet available. In care there lies a certain anticipation or awaiting, that is, a certain relation to the future. I await something from the future that affects me; it is not something that I am but rather something I have to deal with. To concern oneself in this way with the future is at the same time to forget. What is of concern loses its character of having-become what it is; it is simply there for us. Its history is covered over. It becomes an everyday matter. The counter-phenomenon to this awaiting is thus not memory but forgetting. Everyday life always lives in the present, which provides the measure with which the future is calculated and the past is forgotten. This tendency to stay within the present is what has brought about the use of clocks. Why are there clocks? Because everyday life wants to have the course of the world available in the “now.” Now and then, and then, and then. . . .
