O nós, o vós, o tu, o eu são aquilo por que se pergunta. Por conseguinte, os homens são-nos dados, numa primeira abordagem, como nós e vós, e eu, e tu. (80) À pergunta – como se definem os nós e vós, e eu, e tu poderíamos responder: eles são, diferentemente das plantas, animais, pedras, etc., pessoas e associações de pessoas. Mas o que devemos entender nós sob o título “pessoas”’? Independentemente do tacto de eu, tu, nós e vós não serem inequívocos, nem claros na sua origem, verificamos que, com esta resposta, nos desviámos da direcção da pergunta para a pergunta pelo quê, pois procurámos determinar o que os tu, eu, e vós, e nós são. Nós temos, contudo, de conservar a direcção da pergunta pelo quem e temos de perguntar quem vem ao nosso encontro, a partir da direcção dessa pergunta.

— Quem és tu? Quem és tu mesmo? Quem sou eu mesmo? Quem somos nós mesmos? – a pergunta pelo quem aponta para o domínio daquele ente que é sempre um si mesmo (Selbst). Assim, nós podemos determinar a resposta à pergunta prévia: o homem é um si mesmo.

Quem nos dera saber agora o que é um si mesmo! Aqui falta-nos completamente o conceito. Nós pressupomos de maneira pouco clara um determinado sentido. Compreendemos o que quer dizer nós mesmos, tu mesmo, eu mesmo. Mas a determinação da essência precisa sempre do conceito. Assim a resposta prende só de momento o que é estranho. Portanto, o estranho também não desapareceu, pelo contrário.

Mas o estranho não está no facto de não termos do si mesmo nenhuma definição, mas no facto de, com o nosso perguntar, já por duas vezes nos termos desviado do sentido. É certo que nós conservámos a (81) direcção quando já não perguntavamos “o quê”, mas sim “quem”. A resposta “ele mesmo” está correcta, na medida em que dizemos aquilo que já se mostrou a nós, na direcção da pergunta. Ela é, porém, não verdadeira, na medida em que ela oculta o que nela permanece propriamente encerrado. Na ciência, sabemos em geral dizer muitas coisas correctas, mas muito poucas verdadeiras. A ciência move-se a maior parte do tempo em redor do correcto e não do verdadeiro.

Ora, em que medida é, porém, apesar de tudo, a resposta em si correcta – “o homem é um si mesmo” – não verdadeira? Porque nós não persistimos na pergunta, não respondemos a partir da direcção que a pergunta aponta. – “Quem é o homem?” – um si mesmo. – “Quem é um ser si mesmo?” – nós! – “Quem somos nós então, quem somos nós, nós, os que perguntamos?”

A pergunta preliminar funda-se no homem, como um si mesmo. A pergunta reenvia o que pergunta em direcção a si mesmo. Nós mesmos somos os questionados. Quando o perguntador pergunta quem o homem é como um si mesmo, torna-se ele mesmo o questionado. Por isso, a pergunta não diz: – “o que é o homem?” nem – “quem é o homem?” – , mas – “quem somos nós mesmos?”

Assim, está definitivamente excluído que nós perguntemos por tipos, épocas, culturas. Perguntamos por aquilo que é perguntado na pergunta. Nós aceitamos a resposta correcta como resposta verdadeira só então quando, nesta resposta, não esquecermos a pergunta incluída, quando não entendermos mal a resposta, como determinação do quê, como propriedade, mas (82) como orientação para o si mesmo, nomeadamente para nós mesmos.

 — Quem somos nós mesmos? – Isto torna-se lentamente claro quando nós percorremos passo a passo e de modo rigoroso a pergunta pela essência do homem. Daí resulta a dificuldade peculiar. Não admira que a pergunta pelo homem, como pergunta, até agora tenha sido tão pouco desenvolvida, não admira que as respostas sejam tão confusas, acidentais e indecisas. Pois um labirinto após outro espreita no caminho. Não somente esquecemos logo, perante a correcção da resposta, a verdade da resposta – nós ignoramos também sempre de novo a verdadeira ordem interna e a sequência da pergunta.

Parece que a pergunta “o que é um si mesmo?” é correcta. Nós vemos, porém, já na forma interrogativa “o que é?” que nos afastámos de novo da direcção. Na verdade mostrar-se-á que a pergunta “o que é o si mesmo?” está correcta num determinado ponto da sua direcção, mas apenas num determinado ponto – e só então quando desenvolvemos suficientemente a direcção da pergunta.

A partida, podemos, porém, passar bem sem o conceito do si mesmo. Apresentámos aqui a prova. E que compreendemos a pergunta enquanto ela se dirige a nós. Nós temos uma pré-compreensão da palavra e do seu significado, contudo, uma compreensão não conceptual, não a podemos definir logo à primeira. Enquanto aspiramos ao conceito, nós designamos a pré-compreensão de pré-conceptual. A resposta “o homem é um si mesmo” descobre-se-nos como pergunta que aponta na direcção de nós mesmos. (83)

Ficamos expostos durante todo o percurso à pergunta “quem somos nós?”, e quanto mais verdadeiramente a percorrermos, tanto mais insistentemente toda a pergunta posterior reconduzirá a nós mesmos. Portanto, não progredimos, mas andamos à volta de nós mesmos cada vez mais perto e mais nitidamente.

I have already mentioned that the question of the essence has the character of a fore-question. That means that with the question of the essence it is not indifferent as to how and in which direction the question is launched; it is not indifferent whether the direction is kept to, whether wc from the start adequately meet (treffen) at the first attempt or whether the question remains underdetermined in the formulation of a question. The fore-question must satisfy all three conditions, it must genuinely launch and sufficiently determine in order to remain question-strong for the additional questions and not become overpowered by a haphazard answer.

How are we in our case, however, to get in the situation of asking this question wrongly? But, of course, wc are asking unprejudiced: “What is the human being?” However, even with this question we have already asked wrongly—that is, insofar as we are asking: “ What is the human being?” With this, we designate the human being in advance as an object, a thing, as something we encounter, encounter and come upon as present-at-hand, organize according to kind and species, and display according to the order. Yet, how else are we to take the questioning fore-view of the human being as long as we are asking for his essence? The essence of a matter surely does mean that what something is. Surely, every being has an essence!

Yet, not every essence lets itself be determined as what-being, namely, not in those cases when already the question concerning (he what constantly shoves us aside in its course of question, instead of bringing us nearer to the beings concerned—and with this turns our questioning into a passing-by-questioning.

We must decide whether we are moving in such a passing-by-questioning, if we ask: “What is the human being?” Is there not still another form of questioning? Certainly! Instead of asking, “What is the human being?” we can ask, “How is the human being?” That can mean, how is he constituted? Which is his manner of being?

Now, it is easy to see that the question “How is the human being?” always traces itself back to the question, “What is the human being?” How such a thing like a mountain, a number, and so on is, determines itself from that what the respective being is. The How-question docs not release us from the what.

There remains no other possibility of posing the question of the essence concerning the human being, as long as we do not realize in how far this question is a wrong question in relation to the human being. Every question, and the question of the essence in a particular sense, arises in the face of what appears strange to us. The strangeness, however, is not removed through the questioning. We let that which is strange come over us in the questioning, but not to come over us so that we are swallowed up in it. We face up to the strange.

If we now encounter in our realm something like a human being as something strange, how do we ask toward him? We ask not indeterminately what, but who he is. We inquire about and experience the human being, not in the realm of the Thus or What, but in the realm of such and such (des Der und Der, der Die und Die), of the We.

The question of the essence is a fore-question. The genuine and fitting fore-questioning is not the What-question, but the Who-question. We do not ask,” What is the human being?”, but “Who is the human being?” This seems to be a mere matter of words, and, yet, with (his formulation of the question, a definite course is already given to the answer.

In the pursuit of the course of this question, the essence of the human being must now light up to us, as it were, at the first glimmer. The queried one responds to the question “I” or, if there are several, “we.” Or one answers with a proper name. The fore-question thus always is, “Who are you?”—“Who are (plural) you?”—“Who are we?”

Ich habe schon erwähnt, daß die Wesensfrage den Charakter einer Vorfrage hat. Das bedeutet, daß es bei der Wesensfrage nicht gleichgültig ist, wie und in welcher Richtung die Frage angesetzt wird; es ist nicht gleichgültig, ob die Richtung ein gehalten wird, ob wir im ersten Anlauf von vornherein hinreichend treffen oder ob die Frage in der Fragestellung unterbestimmt bleibt. Allen drei Bedingungen muß die Vorfrage genügen, sie muß echt ansetzen und hinreichend bestimmen, damit sie für die weiteren Fragen fragekräftig bleibt und nicht von einer zufälligen Antwort überwältigt wird.

Wie sollen wir in unserem Falle aber in die Lage kommen fehlzufragen? Wir fragen ja doch ganz unvoreingenommen: »Was ist der Mensch?« Aber eben mit dieser Frage haben wir bereits fehlgefragt — indem wir nämlich fragen: »Was ist der Mensch?« Wir setzen dabei den Menschen im vorhinein an wie ein Ding, eine Sache, wie solches, das wir antreffen, als Vorhandenes antreffen und vorfinden, nach Art und Gattung ordnen und nach der Ordnung zur Schau stellen. Aber wie sollen wir sonst den fragenden Vorblick auf den Menschen nehmen, solange wir nach seinem Wesen fragen? Das Wesen einer Sache bedeutet doch das, was etwas ist. Jedes Seiende hat doch ein Wesen!

Doch läßt sich nicht jedes Wesen als Wassein bestimmen, nämlich dann nicht, wenn schon die Frage nach dem Was in ihrer Fragerichtung uns ständig abdrängt, statt uns dem betreffenden Seienden zu nähern — und unser Fragen damit zu einem Vorbeifragen macht.

Wir müssen entscheiden, ob wir uns in solchem Vorbeifragen bewegen, wenn wir fragen: »Was ist der Mensch?« Gibt es nicht noch eine andere Form des Fragens? Gewiß! Statt zu fragen »Was ist der Mensch?« können wir fragen: »Wie ist der Mensch?« Das kann bedeuten: Wie ist er beschaffen? Welches ist seine Art zu sein?

(34) Nun läßt sich leicht einsehen, daß die Frage »Wie ist der Mensch?« sich immer zurückleitet auf die Frage: »Was ist der Mensch?« Wie dergleichen wie ein Berg, eine Zahl usw. ist, bestimmt sich aus dem, was das betreffende Seiende ist. Die Wiefrage entbindet uns nicht von dem Was.

Es bleibt so lange keine andere Möglichkeit, die Wesensfrage nach dem Menschen zu stellen, solange wir nicht einsehen, inwiefern diese Frage in bezug auf den Menschen eine Fehlfrage ist. Jede Frage, und die Wesensfrage in einem vernehmlichen Sinn, erhebt sich angesichts des uns Befremdenden. Durch das Fragen wird die Befremdhchkeit aber nicht beseitigt. Wir lassen im Fragen das Befremdliche über uns kommen, aber nicht so über uns kommen, daß wnr darin versinken. Wir stellen uns dem Befremdlichen.

Wenn uns nun in unserem Bereich dergleichen wie ein Mensch als ein Befremdliches begegnet, wie fragen wir ihm entgegen? Wir fragen nicht unbestimmt, was, sondern wer er sei. Wir erfragen und erfahren den Menschen nicht im Bereich des So oder Was, sondern im Bereich des Der und Der, der Die und Die, des Wir.

Die Wesensfrage ist eine Vorfrage. Die echte und angemessene Vorfrage ist nicht die Wasir&ge, sondern die Werhage. Wir fragen nicht »Was ist der Mensch?«, sondern »Wer ist der Mensch?«. Dies scheint eine bloße Wortangelegenheit zu sein, und doch ist mit dieser Fragestellung der Antwort schon eine ganz bestimmte Richtung gegeben.

Im Verfolg dieser Fragerichtung muß uns das Wesen des Menschen nun gleichsam im ersten Schein aufleuchten. Auf die Frage antwortet der Angefragte »ich« oder, wenn es mehrere sind, »wir«. Oder es wird mit einem Eigennamen geantwortet. Die Vorfrage lautet daher immer: »Wer bist du?« — »Wer seid ihr?« — »Wer sind wir?«
