y) O fundamentum como eu

Entretanto, não apenas o possível caráter do fundamentum está antecipadamente predeterminado pelo predomínio da ideia matemática do método, como também este método decide previamente, de modo específico, o único fundamento que, como tal, pode vir ao caso.

Entregar-se, de uma vez por todas ao método, significa: buscar o que há de mais simples e evidente, isto é, o indubitável. A dúvida tem, primeiro, o caráter de afastamento e exclusão. Excluir da validade tudo que não puder resistir-lhe, isto é, tudo que for objeto matemático, no sentido mais amplo de todos. Afastar tudo de que simplesmente se pode, de alguma maneira, duvidar. Quando tiver sido afastado tudo de que se puder duvidar, resta, em princípio apenas, o simples duvidar em si mesmo. Ora, duvidar é uma atividade de pensar, cogitatio, em sentido mais amplo. Assim, o que se pode encontrar como o indubitável que se procura, deve ter o caráter de pensamento. Ora, todo pensamento pensa (55) com o pensador, que pensa; o pensamento sabe de si, como eu penso. A coisa indubitavelmente dada é o eu, que pensa.

δ) O eu como eu mesmo. A consideração do si-mesmo como ilusão

Assim emerge, como fundamento indubitável, a primeira sentença, a mais simples de todas, o ser coisa do eu. O eu do homem que pensa desloca-se, destarte, para o centro do que pode tornar-se saber propriamente humano. O eu, porém, significa, para o homem individual, e, em primeiro lugar, o que ele mesmo é, aquilo em que ele tem de apropriar-se de si-mesmo. O retorno radical para o eu adquire então o caráter de uma consideração originária de si mesmo.

Todavia, o retorno para o eu através da consideração da dúvida dá apenas a aparência de originariedade e radicalidade (por trás e acima de tudo está o dogma do primado do método matemático). Assim como o retorno é uma aparência, também o rigor da consideração do si-mesmo é uma ilusão. Pois não está, de forma alguma, acertado que o homem possa chegar a ele mesmo pelo caminho do pensamento do “eu”, se o próprio e si-mesmo do homem não for algo muito mais originário, que se ausenta e desaparece justamente através do eu. A pretensa consideração do si-mesmo proposta por Descartes é uma ilusão, por simplesmente não atingir a questão mencionada.

Vou dar duas provas sobre a medida em que a consideração fundamental de Descartes, fundada no eu, não atinge o si-mesmo próprio do homem, ele mesmo!

ε) A essência do eu (mesmo) como consciência

Sobretudo, é a partir de Descartes que se vê a essência do eu na consciência. O eu é o que sabe de si mesmo; este estar consciente de si mesmo determina o ser do si-mesmo. A consequência natural dessa determinação é que o eu se dissolve num feixe de representações. Estas permanecem assim, mesmo que todas elas se ordenem para um pólo só, o chamado pólo do eu, donde elas se irradiam. Nem o agir, nem mesmo a (56) decisão, nem até o caráter fundamental da historicidade e da dependência essencial do homem em relação com a co-presença dos outros homens servem aqui de princípio e arranque para si mesmo. O caráter pontual, sem história nem espiritualidade, do eu cartesiano corresponde inteiramente ao que o primado do pensamento matemático decide a priori sobre seus possíveis objetos.

A consciência do eu e sua forma é que aqui determinam o ser do si-mesmo. Este primado da consciência diante do ser decorreu, de modo totalmente arbitrário, do predomínio do método matemático. As consequências desastrosas deste primado no tempo posterior a Descartes nos vêm ao encontro no sistema de Hegel. O eu é entendimento e vontade determinada pelo entendimento, não, porém, espírito; o conceito posterior de espírito ainda não está presente.

γ) The fundamentum as the I

But it is not just the general, sole possible character of the fundamentum that is determined in advance and in general by the predominance of this mathematical conception of method; through this method, it is also decided in advance and in particular what the only thing is that can come under consideration as such a foundation.

Dedicating oneself, once and for all, to the method means seeking out what is simplest and most perspicuous, that is, indubitable. To begin with, the doubt has the character of doing away with or putting out of commission everything that is incapable of resisting it, that is, whatever is not a mathematical object in the broadest sense. Away with everything that is doubtful at all and in any way. When such doubtful things are cut out altogether, what is left over is, in principle, only the sheer doubting itself. Doubting leaves only itself untouched; but doubting is a kind of thinking in the broader sense, cogitatio. What can be encountered in general as the indubitably present at hand that is sought must have the character of thinking. But every thinking thinks with the thinker who thinks; thinking knows about itself as the I think. What is indubitably present at hand is the I that thinks.

δ) The I as self. Self-reflection as a delusion

So this is the source of the first, simplest proposition—the assertion of the presence at hand of the I. The I of the thinking human being thus moves into the center of what can truly be humanly known. But first of all, for the individual human being, the I means what he himself is, that within which he has his self as his own. The radical return to the I acquires the character of originary self-reflection.

Yet the return to the I by means of the process of doubt is only the illusion of originality and radicalism (behind and above it there stands the dogma of the priority of the mathematical method). Just as the return is an illusion, the rigor of the self-reflection is a delusion. For it has not been settled in the least whether man attains his self by thinking of his “I” at all, whether the human self is not something far more originary and is missed precisely through the I. So the supposed self-reflectiveness of Descartes is a delusion, because it never arrives at this question.

And now, two essential pieces of evidence for the extent to which the fundamental Cartesian line of thought misses the human self by grounding itself on the I. 

ε) The essence of the I (self) as consciousness

Since Descartes, the essence of the I has been seen, above all, in consciousness. The I is the sort of thing that knows of itself; this self-consciousness determines the Being of the self. The natural consequence of this determination of the I is that the I dissolves into a bundle of representations, which remain even if one assigns them all to a so-called I-pole from which they radiate. Neither action nor decidedness, much less the characteristic of historicity and of man’s essential connection to those who are being-here with him—a characteristic that lies at the ground of decidedness—enter into this approach to the self. This pointlike, ahistorical, and spiritless character of the Cartesian I corresponds completely to what a priority of mathematical thought decides in advance about its possible object.

The consciousness of the I and its form determine here the Being of the self. In the Hegelian system we will see how fatefully this priority of consciousness over Being, which arises completely arbitrarily from a predominance of the mathematical method, worked itself out in the period following Descartes. The I: the understanding and the understanding will, but not spirit; the later concept of spirit is not yet there.

γ) Das Fundamentum als Ich

Aber nicht nur der allgemeine, allein mögliche Charakter des Fundamentum ist überhaupt vorbestimmt durch die Vorherrschaft des mathematischen Methodengedankens, es ist auch durch diese Methode im besonderen vorweg entschieden, was als solches Fundament allein in Frage kommen kann.

Der Methode ein für allemal sich ausliefern heißt: Aufsuchen des Einfachsten und Einsichtigsten, d. h. Unbezweifelbaren. Das Zweifeln hat zunächst den Charakter des Wegschaffens, Außergeltungsetzens von all dem, was ihm nicht zu widerstehen vermag, d.h. was nicht mathematischer Gegenstand im weitesten Sinne ist. Weg mit allem, was überhaupt und irgendwie bezweifelbar ist. Wenn solches Bezweifelbare überhaupt ausgeschieden wird, bleibt grundsätzlich nur noch das bloße Zweifeln selbst. Das Zweifeln läßt nur sich selbst übrig; Zweifeln aber ist eine Art des Denkens im weiteren Sinne, cogitatio. Was als das gesuchte unbezweifelbar Vorhandene überhaupt angetrofffen werden kann, muß den Charakter des Denkens haben. Jedes Denken aber denkt mit dem Denker, der denkt; das Denken weiß um sich als Ich denke. Das unbezweifelbar Vorhandene ist das Ich, das denkt.

(42) δ) Das Ich als Selbst. Die Selbstbesinnung als Täuschung

So springt als unbezweifelbares Fundament heraus der erste einfachste Satz vom Vorhandensein des Ick. Das Ich des denkenden Menschen rückt so in die Mitte des eigentlich menschlich flößbaren. Das Ich aber bedeutet dem einzelnen Menschen zu allernächst jenes, was er seihst ist, das, worin er sein Selbst zu eigen hat. Der radikale Rückgang auf das Ich gewinnt den Charakter der ursprünglichen Selbstbesinnung.

Allein, der Rückgang auf das Ich durch die Zweifelsbetrachtung ist nur der Schein von Ursprünglichkeit und Radikalismus (dahinter und darüber steht das Dogma vom Vorrang der mathematischen Methode). So wie der Rückgang ein Schein ist, so ist die Strenge der Selbstbesinnung eine Täuschung. Denn es ist ja ganz und gar nicht ausgemacht, ob der Mensch auf dem Wege des Denkens seines »Ich« überhaupt zu seinem Selbst kommt, ob das Selbst des Menschen nicht etwas weit Ursprünglicheres ist und durch das Ich hindurch gerade verfehlt wird. Die vermeintliche Selbstbesinnlichkeit des Descartes ist eben eine Täuschung, weil sie auf die genannte Frage überhaupt nicht kommt.

Inwiefern die Descartessche Fundamentalbetrachtung, indem sie sich auf das Ich gründet, das Selbst des Menschen verfehlt, dafür zwei wesentliche Belege.

ε) Das Wesen des Ich (Selbst) als Bewußtsein

Seit Descartes vor allem wird das Wesen des Ich im Bewußtsein gesehen. Das Ich ist solches, was von sich selbst weiß; dieses Bewußthaben seiner selbst bestimmt das Sein des Selbst. Die natürliche Folge dieser Bestimmung des Ich wird es, daß das Ich sich auflöst in ein Bündel von Vorstellungen, die auch dann bleiben, wenn man sie alle einem sogenannten Ichpol zuordnet, aus dem sie hervorstrahlen. Weder das Handeln noch gar die Entschiedenheit, noch vollends der dieser zugrundeliegende Charakter der (43) Geschichtlichkeit und wesenhaften Verbundenheit des Menschen mit den Mitdaseienden kommt hier in den Ansatz des Selbst. Jener punktuelle, geschichts- und geistlose Charakter des Des-cartesschen Ich entspricht ganz dem, was ein Vorrang des mathematischen Denkens über dessen möglichen Gegenstand vorentscheidet.

Das Bewußtsein des Ich und seine Form bestimmt hier das Sein des Selbst. Wie verhängnisvoll sich dieser ganz willkürlich aus einer Vorherrschaft der mathematischen Methode entspringende Porrang des Bewußtseins vor dem Sein in der Folgezeit nach Descartes ausgewirkt hat, wird uns im Hegelschen System begegnen. Das Ich: Verstand und verständiger Wille, aber nicht Geist; der spätere Geistbegriff ist noch nicht da.
