Há muito tempo que nós, ocidentais, pensamos na memória como uma espécie de tipografia em que os vestígios de pessoas, lugares e coisas são gravados ou "dactilografados" na tábua de cera da mente. Mesmo depois de passado o momento da percepção, esses caracteres ou tipos perduram como traços de memória. A sua própria persistência implica que esses traços ou imagens estão em relação iconográfica com "as próprias coisas". A tipografia produz — ou pelo menos promete — uma iconografia. No entanto, o tempo passa. As pessoas, os lugares e as coisas passam. Os ícones que conservamos estão presentes quando nos lembramos, mas as coisas em si estão ausentes, passadas, ultrapassadas. A única forma de restaurar a presença do que passou é recolher os ícones como se fossem constitutivos das próprias coisas (passadas), "constitutivos" da mesma forma que as letras constituem um texto. Recordar é uma espécie de leitura, movendo-se através de um meio que se apaga absolutamente e deixa as coisas (passadas) mostrarem-se através do seu diafane. Tal como você, que está a ler estas minhas linhas e letras, as percorre sem esforço para ver o que quero dizer, também os ícones da memória, inscritos tipograficamente, podem ser recolhidos. A memória é engramatologia, a recolha de marcas incisas ou engramas como se fossem letras, γράμματα.

For a long time now we Westerners have thought of memory as a kind of typography whereby vestiges of persons, places, and things are incised or “typed” in the wax tablet of the mind. Even after the moment of perception has passed, such characters or types perdure as memory traces. Their very perdurance implies that these traces or images Stand in iconographie relation to “the things themselves.” Typography produces—or at least promises—an iconography. Yet time passes. Persons, places, and things go by. The icons we retain are present to us when we remember, but the things themselves are absent, past, bygone. The only way to restore the presence of what is past is to glean the icons as though they were constitutive of the (past) things themselves, “constitutive” in the way that letters constitute a text. Remembering is a kind of reading, moving through a medium that effaces itself absolutely and lets the (past) things show themselves through its diaphane. Just as you who are reading these lines and letters of mine now glide across them effortlessly in order to see what I mean, so too can the icons of memory, inscribed typographically, be gathered. Memory is engrammatology, the gleaning of incised marks or engrams as though they were letters, γράμματα.
