Algo acontece, mas ele acontece a alguém ou por meio deste alguém mesmo. As duas coisas juntas também são possíveis, até mesmo habituais: nós podemos fazer algo e nos transformar em meio a este fazer. Ou fazemos algo e nos transformamos aí sem uma intenção prévia; só constatamos subsequentemente o fato de termos nos tornado outros. Tal como todo e qualquer movimento, aquilo que fazemos acontece no tempo e possui o seu tempo. Todavia, sempre experimentamos o tempo e a nós mesmos no tempo. O fazer evidencia-se como temporal.

Há um exemplo clássico de como devemos compreender isto. Ele provém de Santo Agostinho que trouxe consigo e fez valer com a sua análise a experiência do tempo que tinha sido desconsiderada por Aristóteles. Agostinho toma como exemplo uma apresentação: eu canto uma canção que conheço — dicturus sum canticum, quod noui . Este também é um movimento, mas a sua realização está fixada: aquele que canta tem de realizá-lo por si mesmo e o que ele realiza é o movimento. Aquilo que denominamos “experiência temporal” só se revela, quando tratamos detidamente desta ideia e, com isto, no que diz respeito à consideração, trocamos a perspectiva do observador pela perspectiva performativa. O exemplo que Agostinho coloca no centro de sua consideração é visado neste sentido; só há o movimento aqui em questão, ou seja, o cantar, por meio daquele mesmo que canta, e ele se vivência aí. No entanto, a realização do movimento não é arbitrária. Por mais que haja sempre algo a ser decidido no momento em que cantamos uma canção, ao menos o seu tempo está fundamentalmente dado de antemão. A velocidade do canto não poderá ser de modo algum uma velocidade qualquer. Além disto, a canção é longa ou breve. Ela carece de seu tempo. Nesta medida, aquilo que fazemos é ao mesmo tempo um acontecimento: a perspectiva da realização é concomitantemente a perspectiva de um transcurso. Trata-se da perspectiva, na qual algo acontece por meio de nós mesmos ou junto a nós mesmos.

Neste caso, o que está em questão não é mais o tempo do movimento, mas antes de tudo o tempo daquele que se movimenta. Este é um tempo que é experimentado por aquele que se movimenta como o seu tempo. Enquanto tal, contudo, ele não é apenas o respectivo presente distribuído de algo presente que se estende no movimento, um presente como o qual o tempo precisou ser compreendido a partir de Aristóteles. Ao contrário, ele se mostra desde o princípio e durante a realização como iminente para aquele que se movimenta e fica para trás como o tempo daquilo que já foi realizado. Em contrapartida, a realização é presente em sua própria fase respectiva. Logo que o que está em questão não é mais apenas o movimento que se estende temporalmente, mas a realização ou mesmo apenas a correalização deste movimento, as determinações temporais de um agora anterior e posterior não são mais suficientes. Além delas, entram agora em jogo futuro, passado e presente.

Agostinho descreveu esta conexão de maneira bastante plástica e introduziu aí alguns conceitos que são imprescindíveis para a experiência temporal, assim como para a tentativa de concebê-la em meio à apresentação. Isto acontece na elucidação de seu modelo exemplar: antes de começar a cantar, o todo da canção se estende em minha expectativa (expectatio). Depois que comecei a cantar, o cantado se estende na memória (memória). Em contrapartida, aquilo que está sendo agora cantado está presente para a minha atenção. Aquilo que era dotado do caráter de futuro atravessa esta atenção, para assim se transformar em algo passado . Deste modo, sendo a cada vez, a canção atravessa em seu ser o tempo. A abertura que ela percorre, contudo, subsiste enquanto tal. Ela também já subsistia antes de eu ter começado a cantar, e, por isto, cantar foi efetivamente possível. A canção não estava presente como algo cantado, mas ela já se encontrava em minha expectativa; depois do fim do canto, ela não está mais presente no cantar, mas se encontra em minha memória.

Aquilo que pode soar aqui óbvio e pouco estimulante é para Agostinho a chave da compreensão do tempo. Na medida em que expectativa e memória são levadas em conta, resolve-se justamente um problema que Aristóteles já tinha visto: como é que aquilo que a cada vez não está aí pode, contudo, estar presente? Aristóteles tinha respondido esta pergunta por meio da compreensão do tempo que é levada a termo a partir da extensão temporalmente indiferente do tempo e da presença temporalmente indiferente daquele que se movimenta: o ponto de partida e a meta no sentido de um ser respectivo estão presentes no movimento determinado — e isto por meio de sua determinação. E aquilo que sustenta a realização do movimento é a duração daquele que se movimenta; o seu caráter de agora diferencia-se nos estados do agora anterior e do agora posterior e, assim, mantém coesa a extensão do movimento no ser respectivo. Deste modo, o tempo tinha se revelado como a multiplicação coesa da presentidade em relação ao ser respectivo com vistas à extensão do movimento. Santo Agostinho pensa de maneira diversa: ele nem recorre à extensão temporalmente indiferente da canção, que possui um começo e um fim e, com isto, possui tal e tal tamanho, nem a presença temporalmente indiferente daquele que se movimenta lhe oferece a segurança suficiente para que um agora anterior e um posterior se co-pertençam. O modo como se dá a canção que, como diz Agostinho, é conhecida, desempenha um papel tão pequeno quanto a presença contínua daquele que canta. Ao contrário, o não-ser do anterior ou posterior já é suspenso pela própria experiência temporal. E, contudo, há no espirito a expectativa do futuro. Isto é correspondentemente válido para o passado e até mesmo para o presente: aquilo que é presente, o verso da canção que acaba de soar agora, também já passa em meio ao soar. Aquilo que permanece, porém, é a atenção que é sempre válida para o ente a cada vez em seu passar . A condição para o fato de algo temporal estar presente reside tão-somente na experiência do tempo.

Something occurs, but it occurs to someone or by his own means. It is possible for both to go together, indeed common: One can do something and in doing so changes. Or one does something and changes without prior Intention to do so; it is only in retrospect that one realizes that he has become different. Like every movement, what one does occurs in time and has its time. Yet one thereby always experiences time and one experiences himself in time. Activity proves to be temporal.

There is a classical example that indicates how this is to be understood. It derives from Augustine, and his introduction and analysis of it brings into focus the experience of time neglected by Aristotle. Augustine takes for his example a performance: I sing a song that I know—dicturus sum canticum, quod noui. This, too, is a movement, although its enactment is fixed: The singer has to enact it himself and what he enacts is the movement. What one refers to as “the experience of time” is disclosed only if one takes getting involved with this idea under consideration and exchanges the perspective of observation for the perspective of enactment. The example that Augustine places at the center of his consideration is intended in this sense: The movement at issue, that is, the singing, is given only through a self, and one has inner experience of himself in this. The enactment of the movement, however, is Not arbitrary. Whatever is to be decided in the singing of the song, its time is at least in principle pregiven. The speed of what is sung could not be completely and utterly arbitrary. Besides, the song is long or short. It needs its time. In this respect, what one does is at the same time an occurrence; the perspective of enactment is at the same time the perspective of a course. It is the perspective, in which something occurs both by ones own means and to him.

The concern here is no longer only with the time of movement, but above all with the time of one who is moving himself. It is a time that is experienced by this individual as his time. As such, however, time is not merely the divided, respective present of something present that is stretched in movement, as it would have to be understood with Aristotle. Rather, for the one who is moving himself, time lies ahead at the beginning and during enactment and time lies behind as what has already been enacted. What is present, by contrast, is the enactment itself in its respective phase. As soon as the concern is no longer with the temporally stretched movement alone, but, rather, with enacting or also only co-enacting this movement, the temporal determinations of an earlier and a later now no longer suffice. Outside of them, future, past, and present now come into play.

Augustine has described this connection very clearly and in doing so introduced a few concepts that are indispensable for the experience of time and likewise for the attempt to grasp it in presentation. This occurs in the elucidation of his model example: Before I begin to sing, the entirety of the song is stretched into my expectation (expectatio). After I have begun, what has been sung stretches into memory (memoria). What has just now been sung, by contrast, is there for my attentiveness (attentio). What Was futural passes through this attentiveness, in order thus to become something of the past. The song in its being thus passes through time as it respectively unfolds. The openness that it passes through, however, remains in existence as such. This openness was already in existence before I had begun to sing, and it is only (270) for this reason that the singing was possible at all. The song was not there as something sung, yet it stood in my expectation; after the end of the singing, it is no longer present in singing, yet it stands in my memory.

What may sound completely obvious and not very exciting here is, for Augustine, the key to the understanding of time. Namely, because expectation and memory are taken into account, a Problem is solved that Aristotle had already seen: How can something that is not there at a given time nevertheless be there? Aristotle answered the question by his understanding of time from the standpoint of the temporally indifferent stretch of movement and the temporally indifferent presence of the one who is moving himself: Point of departure and the aim, taken in the sense of something given, are present in determinate movement through their determinacy. And, it is the duration of the one moving himself that bears the enactment of the movement; its now-ness differentiates itself into states of the earlier and the later now and in this way holds together the stretch of the movement in respective being. Time had thus proven to be the unified duplication of the present of a respective being in regard to the stretch of movement. Augustine thinks otherwise: Neither does he go back to the temporally indifferent stretch of the song, which has beginning and end and is this or that long, nor does the temporally indifferent presence of the one who is moving himself give him sufficient assurance for the fact that an earlier now and a later one belong together. The givenness of the song, which, as Augustine says, is familiar, plays just as little a role as the continuous presence of the one who sings. Rather, it is solely through the experience of time itself that the earlier and later are sublated. Who would want to dispute, Augustine says, that the future is not. And yet, in the spirit (animus), there is the expectation of the future. This holds, accordingly, for the past and even for the present: what is present, the song verse resounding just now, has, in resounding, already passed. What remains, however, is the attentiveness, which always holds for whatever is respectively passing. The condition for the fact that something temporal is there lies solely in the experience of time.
