+Na medida em que nos dispomos a responder a essa pergunta, encontramo-nos inopinadamente em meio a uma postura estranha. O homem que vive de maneira reta e natural também pensa, seja mesmo porquanto leva em consideração, reflete ou conjectura algo urgente. Pede-se o auxílio do pensamento como de uma espécie de instrumento, que manuseamos. (Martelo – fixar o prego; o mesmo acontece com o pensamento que fixa aquilo que representamos. Isso está em ordem.) O que acontece, porém, quando pensamos sobre o pensar: isso se parece com uma tentativa de martelar o martelo. Não é possível fazer isso; não, em todo caso, com um e o mesmo martelo; com esse não é possível martelar a si mesmo.
+Posto, porém, que algo assim fosse e seja de fato possível, então isso só aconteceria por intermédio de um segundo instrumento. Se, por exemplo, o cabo se afrouxa, nós martelamos o pino-martelo propriamente dito, para que ele fique uma vez mais firme. Em nosso caso, no entanto, não sobre o pensamento, mas para distinguir diversos modos e elucidar a essência do pensar insigne. Distinguir o pensar e o pensar. Esse pensar à mão, encontrando-se diante de nós? Como martelo, alicate? De qualquer modo, contudo, aqui também (psicologia do pensamento) em meio a um pensar habitual e filosófico. Já distinguimos aqui. Não obstante – quem nos diz que o pensar é um pensar pensante – por exemplo, Kant? Com certeza, porém, o que é o filosófico e o que é o habitual? O filosófico inabitual não ajuda nada (já ter distinguido. Distinguir! Pensar! Não apenas não se encontrando diante de nós, mas também não sendo instrumento, senão?
