| + | Today – and we can only ever speak of our Dasein as we are doing now – we find ourselves in a favorable situation. It is favorable Not merely on account of the great variety and vitality of research but also because of a fundamental tendency to restore autonomy to ‘life’, as the specific manner of being pertaining to animal and plant, and to secure this autonomy for it. This suggests that within the totality of what we call natural science, contemporary biology is attempting to defend itself against the tyranny of physics and chemistry. That is not to say that within certain areas, or in the context of certain approaches within biology, questions framed in terms of physics and chemistry are never justifiable or useful. Rather, what the struggle within biology against physics and chemistry really means is that ‘life’ as such cannot in principle be grasped from within the perspective of these disciplines. Yet this also implies that we cannot start by explaining ‘living substance’ in physico-chemical terms, only to find ourselves in the embarrassing position of having to admit some other factor later on when our calculations fail and we are left with an inexplicable residue. On the contrary, the delimitation of life must be accomplished on the basis of the fundamental character of living beings themselves as something that cannot be explained or grasped at all in physico-chemical terms. The task confronting biology as a science is to develop an entirely new projection of the objects of its inquiry. (Expressed from another point of view, which is not (189) necessarily identical with what we have just said, the task today is to liberate ourselves from the mechanistic conception of life. Up till quite recently this negative tendency has been pursued under the slogans of ‘vitalism’, | ||
