+Heidegger examines the deep structure of the existentiale being-in by means of a slightly more superficial one that is closer to our daily lives, Sein-bei. Now, as you can imagine, Being and Time is a tremendously difficult book to translate. Heidegger is constantly making up words or using them in strange ways and playing on all kinds of word associations that don't carry over to English, and by and large Macquarrie and Robinson do a remarkable job. But translating Sein-bei as "being alongside" is just dumb. It suggests exactly what Heidegger is explicitly trying to distinguish it from, "the side-by-side-ness of an entity called 'Dasein' with another entity called 'world'" (81/55). The whole point of the analysis of being-in is that we are Not alongside the world; we're in it, amid things and among people. So wherever the book has "being alongside," we will instead say "being-amid," which I think is much closer to what Heidegger has in mind. (p. 26)
